Boybreed

Cultured, wholesome, grown, sexy; these are a few words that help convey the end-to-end quality of Boybreed’s latest Genie in a Kettle project. As hinted by the title, the pair equate themselves to an Arabian wish-granting spirit popularized by Disney’s 1992 animated flick - Aladdin. In this case, however, they dedicate their magic to fulfilling a slew of erotic and romantic fantasies on six records of pure Afro-sensual goodness.

Inadvertently, the Genie in a Kettle EP grants the wishes of fans in their millions, who have thirsted for a new Boybreed collection while clutching onto the timeless 2019 debut- Made in the Tropics. With ocean-depth gratitude for their faithfuls, the twins share: “We are blessed to have a fanbase that truly believes in us and our music, and this new EP is one step in our journey that we want them to be a part of”.

A lot of great songs –both singles and off-project cuts– was released over the past few days. Thus the need for our weekly Best New Music.

As usual, we've brought to you, a run-down of these songs. Fresh as they are.

Burna Boy – Wonderful

The African Giant returns with another aspirational banger, ahead of a July release for his forthcoming project Twice as Tall. Produced by Telz, "Wonderful" is all shades of versatility and brilliance.

Kizz Daniel – Ada

Vado the Great, last Thursday, put out the much anticipated King of Love, and I'm definitely loving "Ada," a danceable tune spiced with an accessible love story.

Praiz ft. Kingxn – To The Moon

As titled so, this record is built on ethereal keys and percussions, Praiz's beautiful singing melding perfectly into the imaginative world. Feature Kingxn delivers a fluid rap verse to match the flair of the singer, bringing perfection to the record.

Moonchild Sanelly – Bashiri

South African act Sanelly serves up this visceral body-shaking electro-infused banger. "Bashiri" is a colorful experience, one best experienced in a sparsely lit dancehall filled with swinging hards and moving hips.

Wande Coal – Naughty Girl

After fan favorite "Again," Wande Coal takes the tempo up with this record, which moves at the pace of a club banger, in tradition with "Iskaba." We'll dance to this as we await a project from the legend.

Masterkraft & Flavour – Equipment

Having collaborated extensively, we've seen Masterkraft knows how to bring the best of Flavour and on "Equipment," a mid-tempo party starter, the Afro Highlife maestro sounds full of life over a throbbing Masterkraft beat.

Cryomatic ft. Nanya Ijeh – Moment in the Sun

Cryomatic is a Nigerian Christian EDM band fusing African sound with EDM. "Moment in the Sun," off the Transient EP, is a hopeful record, sunny as the poetic lyrics which accompany its production.

BRYAN THE MENSAH ft. Ko-jo Cue – Big Money

Off Ghanaian new wave rapper BRYAN THE MENSAH's 7-track NOT GOING OUTSIDE comes this hippy Trap record, which features a sweet hook and (as usual) a great verse from Cue.

Oga Network – Who Ask You

"Resist the urge to shalaye" is nowadays a social media enabled trend, and Oga Network's latest record sounds the sonic interpretation of that quip, with the artist speaking on "shalaying" through a series of prideful lines by such talkative characters.

Naira Marley – As E Dey Go

Produced by Rexxie, Naira Marley's new song is a party starting record, with drums and keys which evoke an Owambe party.

Chris Morgan – Opé

With all that's going on, it's easy to lose sight on things that are going right. But veteran worship minister Chris Morgan has penned and recorded a glorious song of gratitude, one you should start the new week with.

Fireboy DML – New York City Girl

In his first single after his groundbreaking debut Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, Fireboy combines R&B and elements of Nigerian Pop, a la Wande Coal. It's a beautiful song, although it will alienate some; obviously an internationally driven single.

Our weekly roundup of Best New Music continues below

Bizzonthetrack ft. WhoIsAkin – Fire Party

Off the deluxe edition of the eponymously titled Bisi Kuti comes this head-bumping jam, reserved for the sleekest moves. Both artists combine beautifully on this, infusing a classic Fuji vibe into the Afro pop production.

Listen on Boomplay

Moelogo – SÀNGÓ & OYÁ

Drawing inspiration from the famed lovers of Yoruba mythology, Moelogo, off this standout from his Me EP, produces a beautiful love song decked in the vibrancy of traditional instruments and vocal delivery.

Tsuni – Anymore

"Anymore" is an eclectic record, with leanings on R&B, Hip Hop and Pop, managing to find a suitable ground between all genres. A truly remarkable song from the remarkable Tsuni.

Rema – Alien

After a well-publicized search for this song's cover (which prompted thousands of brilliant designs), the song is out, and as brilliant as any Rema song. Proclaiming his uniqueness on the record, some listeners noticed a familiarity to its production –Jay-Z's classic, "Dead Presidents II," was of course sampled.

Tomilola ft. The Cavemen – Let Go

Tomilola's "Let Go" appraises the unpredictable quality of life, hence the need for a little more living. It's a beautiful song made even more so by the presence of The Cavemen, who infuse their soulful Highlife sound to the record.

Timaya – Born to Win

Veteran Bayelsa-born musician Timaya has enjoyed an unproblematic time (quite worthy considering the times we're in), stacking his money and living the good life, and he wants you to know that on his latest record. That he was born to win although as he chronicled in its lyrics, he did get off to a tough start.

Wondamagik ft. Ogranya – Zombie

Wondamagik is a brilliant artist/producer. On "Zombie," he features frequent collaborator Ogranya, who brings the Soul to this banger of a track, replete with House influences. Off The Chronicles of Magic tape.

Boybreed ft. Minz – Julie

Two-man Boybreed, coming off their excellent performances on E Kelly's project, feature Minz, who himself was on that EP. "Julie" is a classic love tale spun around a mid-tempo Afro Pop beat which settles into a laid back vibe.

WhoIsAkin – Energy

Sometime ago, the precociously talented WhoIsAkin released his FULL MOON WEEKENDS project, made of 5 tracks. "Energy" is the last song off the slim tape and perhaps the most rewarding, a lovely rendition delivered in the exciting songwriting of Akin's, whose music leans on a trio of Fuji, Nigerian Pop and R&B. Something dreamy about the keys too, but you get the idea.

Jaywon ft. Umu Ogbiligbo – Inside Life

Storytelling and a regal Highlife beat never fails, and not especially when the singers are the trio of Jaywon and Umu Ogbiligbo.

There it goes. This week's selection for Best New Music. Go listen and have blessed days ahead.

EP Review: E Kelly – No Secrets

E Kelly - No Secrets (EP)

An Overview: E Kelly's "No Secrets" Pairs Romance With His Unique Take On Contemporary Afro Pop

It might have taken Sarz to rouse them, but producers are now putting out projects. Chalk it up to the lockdown, here's fact: we've always held producers in high esteem, but this is done silently, and quiet admiration is as good as none. Producers, as the cultural monoliths they are, define the sound of the times and times ahead, sonic prophets so to say. Their relevance cannot be understated, be it as there's literally no music without producers.

In the heat of the "friendly legacy battles", the duo of E Kelly and DJ Coublon did battle. Both beat makers recluse in a sense. Then we heard their songs –even though many hits of theirs didn't get to be played– and we were dazed by our silent admiration. The E Kelly tag isn't unknown, but the person wasn't. And, part of asserting that, as Sarz demonstrated with his ambitious project of beats, was executing a project. Enter No Secrets.

Piquing release with a series of singles, No Secrets –predictably– crept its head as trademark E Kelly. Mid tempo, smoke-on-a-chilly-evening vibe, and he had a preference for serenaders. The duo of Boybreed and Minz featured in the songs – title track "No Secrets" and "Confetti" – meant to test the waters. Solid jams; and the quite political statement, as these showings should prove beneficial to the up and comers.

Come Friday. A day which has assumed the unofficial Nigerian music release day, E Kelly's duo of singles were enough to set him apart. His line-up (so far) had delivered, and the trio of Mr. Eazi, Joeboy, and King Perryy promised nothing shy of great music. These are solid acts in their genres. The litmus test would be to see how well E Kelly would fuse their talent with his own vision, to see if he would, as Sarz did with WurlD, advance a futuristic sound, or if –not in any way less honorable– he would stay in the sound of now, and fashion the best music out of that.

"Need Somebody" features the expertise of Mr. Eazi, his vocals pure on an afro pop sound with Ghanaian influence, so similar to the early sound of Eazi created by E Kelly. But the minimalist production of "Need Somebody" contorts into a melodious affair when Eazi sings "you need someone like me me me," interpolating the Faze classic of similar title. It works. Boybreed continue in the theme of romance, suggesting infidelity with the "let me know" refrain, asked calmly and painfully. Just after that, a soft EDM–esque whistling lifts the underlying percussions, a tested and trusted production trick.

E Kelly No Secrets review

Joeboy, a contemporary master of Nigerian Pop, knows just about what to say (and how to say it) to get crazy-about-cute-guys-singing-about-cute-things-like-love girls to spread word. You'll be astonished, how finely it works. "Oreke" is that sort of song, the type only Joeboy could make, and E Kelly doesn't tamper with that formula very much, and writing this, I broke into dance. Nuff said.

King Perryy shines on "My Girl," another lady-questioning record that masks insecurity in sweet melodies. "You are mine, yeah," he sings over the laid back beat, which closes out with summery guitar strings. "Confetti" is the most in-sync with today's production, a sped-up beat that could pass as Reekado Banks/ afro pop type. The trio of Minz and Boybreed do well enough, and the lines which make the chorus – "money for your head dey fall like confetti" – might sound generic at first, but enough spins and you'll be dancing. While the uniqueness of the artists fail to come through, the song does, and whether that's a good or bad thing, I wouldn't know. Hopefully people check out their music (Minz and Boybreed) after being entertained.

E Kelly's No Secrets doesn't push his sound too much, but there's that unique stamp. The choice of features, too, works to the minimalist direction of this project, though a female artist would have broadened its emotional spectrum. No Secrets is a solid collection, and the trust between the artist and producer shows in every track. Recently, Rexxie put out his Afro Streets tape, more or less cutting his plot in the ground. E Kelly has done the same, and both projects bear similar ambitions. The E Kelly sound was a major part of 2010s Pop, and No Secrets is the first step towards solidifying that enviable legacy. That said, we need more producers' tapes.
