The International Olympic Committee ( IOC) took a unanimous decision to expel the International Boxing Association from its body during the Extraordinary IOC Session which was held on Thursday, June 22, 2023. This is the first time that a sports governing body is been expelled in the history of the Olympic Committee.

The boxing association was initially suspended in 2019 due to some financial and officiating irregularities in the body.

The IOC President, Thomas Bach explained the reason for the suspension during their online meeting.

"We do not have a problem with the sport of boxing. We do not have a problem with the boxers. We appreciate boxing as one of the most global sports. If we had a problem with boxers then there would not have been an Olympic competition in Tokyo, there would be no competition in Paris. Unfortunately, as you will have seen from the file, you can see we have an extremely serious problem with the IBA because of their governance. Because we value the sport of boxing so much, we believe the boxers fully deserve to be governed by an international federation with integrity and transparency".

This decision means that the IOC Task Force will administer the boxing tournament at the Paris 2024 Games, as it did for boxing at the last Olympics in Tokyo 2022.

Boxing has been left off the provisional programme of sports for the 2028 Olympic Games, which means it could lose its Olympic status once and for all.

ARSENAL'S MIDFIELDER BUKAYO SAKA SETS AMAZING RECORD

The Boxing South Africa confirmed the news on its website on Thursday, June 9th, 2022. According to reports from the association, the boxer who is identified as Simiso Buthelezi died after he suffered brain damage from a boxing bout.

The Lightweight boxer was rushed to the hospital, where it was discovered he was bleeding in his brain. It was added that there will be an independent medical review as it concerns the death of the boxer, according to the trainer the boxer was perfect during the training.

The 24-year-old faced compatriot Siphesihle Mntungwa for the WBF All Africa lightweight title on Sunday, but the 10-round contest was stopped by the referee after Buthelezi appeared to shadow box an invisible opponent.

Footage of the fight showed Mntungwa falling through the ropes and then, after the fight was restarted, Buthelezi advancing towards an empty corner where he started to swing punches.

Wow, what a hell of a night. I would like to first and foremost thank God for allowing me to give the world another part of me that's driven with passion and determination. I would like to thank my team and my fans for sticking by my side through this long process. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't disappointed in the outcome but after reflecting on my journey, I now see that what God wanted me to experience is far greater than what I expected to happen.

Wilder added that the fight had taught him a lot and he said feels like a winner too because he believes victories are in the lesson.

We didn't get the win but a wise man once said the victories are within the lessons. I've learned that sometimes you have to lose to win. Although, I wanted the win I enjoyed seeing the fans win even more. Hopefully, I proved that I am a true warrior and a true King in this sport. Wilder is expected to undergo surgery on his hand after the fight and is expected to stay off the ring for six months.

I don't know what's going to happen. I've got one fight left on my contract with Top Rank and ESPN and we will see what that is. But I'm not thinking about boxing right now. I am motivated to get up in the morning, do a little of training, and enjoy my day. I don't have any goals in boxing. I have done everything, the only one to do it in my era. I will always have the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF, Ring magazine champion, that will not evaporate in history, but once it is done, it is done and you cannot get it back.

Once you are done, it doesn't matter how many belts you have, who you beat, what your record is. You are just another bare bum in the shower and I always had that opinion.

You have to enjoy it while it is here because when it is gone. Even the wins and the glory die down and sooner or later you just become another person and a has-been.

Tyson Fury has a list of people that he might be fighting if he decides to get back into the fight. Dillian Whyte is Fury's mandatory challenger, but the Brit's promoter, Eddie Hearn is keen for him to finally get his first world title shot.

Shelly Finkel, his co-manager, confirmed the update on Wilder's health in an interview with the Sun. He said the boxer is expected to undergo emergency surgery in the coming days.

Deontay broke his right hand before the third knuckle and he had to have that fixed next week. He has to have surgery, the knuckle is okay, it's the bone behind the knuckle that broke. He's sore but he was okay, he was home yesterday.

He's healing and at this point, if everything is OK, after the hang surgery he will probably look to enter thr ring mid next year, like April or May.

Wilder was taken to the hospital immediately after the fight to check on his health condition. It was also reported that the American is not considering retiring from boxing anytime soon.

Mirror Boxing confirmed the retirement news on its website on Monday, September 20th, 2021. He said his boxing career is over when he was asked about the possibility of returning to the ring.

Pacquiao confirmed he wants to rest and help his people. He announced on his Twitter account he will run for President of his country next year.

My boxing career? My boxing career is already over. It's done because I've been in boxing for a long time and my family says that it is enough. I just continued because I'm passionate about this sport. I will just support other boxers for us to have a champion again.

In the future, you may not see Manny Pacquiao fight again in the ring. I don't know, but for how many decades, I'm so happy with what I've done in boxing.

I contribute a record in boxing also and to make boxing the top and especially bring honour to my country and the Filipino people. I am so proud to be a Filipino and thankful to all the fans all over the world. I don't know if I'll fight again. Let me relax and think about it. I want to help my people.

He has been serving as a senator in the Philippines since 2016 and will hope he wins the Presidential election next year under the country's ruling party PDP-Laban.

Finally, finally, another one for the resume. What an honour it would be to fight Tyson, get another great fight on my record, best him and then he would move forward. We know his history. He pulled out of a couple of fights. It just happens. He's someone who pulls out of fights. Even with the Wilder situation, it happened again. Good luck to him though and we'll see him sometime. Whenever he's ready, we'll be here waiting.

That didn't happen, but look where we are now, Joshua versus Usyk. It's probably bigger or just as big as that fight.

Holyfield just had a week to prepare for the fight as he had to replace Oscar De La Hoya who was hospitalized after testing positive to Covid-19.

The last time Holyfield fought was in 2001 against Brian Nielsen, but he is still keen to fight former rival Mike Tyson who has also been out of the sports for a long time.
