It was a sad day for supporters of the Black Stars of Ghana as their team failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations that will be hosted in Morocco next year (2025).

Ghana came into the game on match day 5 in a must-win match against Angola at the Estadio de on Thursday, November 15, 2024. This is the first time in 20 years that the West African giants will fail to book qualification for the biannual tournament.

The Ghanaians started the game like a house on fire full of confidence when Jodan Ayew gave them the lead with a powerful strike into the top-left corner. Angola got a lifeline back into the game when Zito Luvumbo was brought down in the box by Gideon Mensah.

However, Ghana's goalkeeper, Manaf Nurudeen, stood up to the occasion with a superb save to deny the equalizer and maintain the lead. The Black Stars were able to keep Angola at bay as the first half ended 1-0.

Angola came back into the game 64th minute as Luvumbo connected with a fantastic header to beat goalkeeper Nurudeen and take the game level with the game ending 1-1. The Black Stars remain third on the group table with three points while Angola top the group with 12 points.

What is next for Ghana?

The Black Stars will now shift attention to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where the Black Stars will need to get back on their feet and put the disappointment of AFCON behind them.

The victory put Angola top of the group with a game to spare ahead of their match day 6 fixture.

Popularly tagged the 'Jollof Derby' Nigeria vs Ghana rivalry has always been one for the books, which is why we compiled a list of the three times the Super Eagles handed the Black Stars a shocking defeat.

The dramatic 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

Nigeria ended Ghana's 17-year unbeaten run in July 2001 in the return leg of the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. The first leg of the fixture which ended in a draw was played in Ghana had been filled with much drama and controversies and an angry reaction from fans as well.

The second leg which was played in Nigeria ended in a convincing victory for the Super Eagles who played as though there was so much to fight for from the first to the last whistle.

Victor Agali scored the opening goal of the match in just two minutes, followed by two more goals from Tijani Babangida in the first half. The game took an interesting turn when Ghana's goalkeeper, Osei Boateng, was given a red card, leaving the team without any available substitutions. As a result, Emmanuel Osei Kuffour, an outfield player, had to take on the role of goalkeeper for the rest of the game.

Following a qualification into the quarter-finals of AFCON 2002 as the top of group A, Nigeria took things up a notch and handed a high-flying Black Stars of Ghana side that finished second in group B which had countries like South Africa, Morocco and so on, a shocking defeat in the final minutes of the game.

The 2002 tournament which was played in Mali saw Garba Lawal hand Nigeria a late victory amidst controversies. The fixture was a dramatic one which saw the goalkeeper of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Ike Shorunmu, hitting the grass hard after clashing with a Ghanaian player who was goal-bound in the early minutes of the game following an erroneous pass from Isaac Okoronkwo.

In the 84th minute at AFCON 2006 in a fixture watched by many in different parts of the world, defender Taye Taiwo earned Nigeria a late win and an edge over their rivals Ghana. The match had been a complex one for the Super Eagles who had initially struggled in the first half of the game after losing the talisman Austin Jay Jay Okocha due to injury, the team, however, had their eyes set on the goal which was qualifying for the next round of the tournament and it was safe to say the goal was accomplished by the most unconventional goalscorer of the tournament.

For many the fixture which will be played on Friday, March 22, 2024, might just be a friendly for the two sides involved in the fixture (Nigeria vs Ghana) there is so much at stake and to play for.

After Ghana's exit from AFCON 2023, the Black Stars captain, André Ayew, has publicly come out to tender an apology.

He tendered the apology in a video posted on social media. André apologised to all Ghanaians and Black Star fans for their below-par performance at the AFCON 2023.

Ghana lost their opening game at the AFCON 2023 to Cape Verde, then proceeded to draw at two other games when they were facing Egypt and Mozambique. This eventually resulted in their exit from the tournament.

Before André‘s apology, the Ghana Football Association had sacked their coach, Chris Hughton, who had been coaching the Black Stars since February 2023. After sacking him, they dissolved the technical team and resolved to design a roadmap for the future of Ghanaian football.

André said in his video that he takes full responsibility for their loss and understands the reasons for the backlash the team has received so far. He also says that he believes this loss will make them stronger.

To conclude, he said “We are Ghana… We are never going to give up… We’ll rise and shine again… to make sure to put our flag where it belongs… May God bless our homeland Ghana.”
