Ghana came into the game on match day 5 in a must-win match against Angola at the Estadio de on Thursday, November 15, 2024. This is the first time in 20 years that the West African giants will fail to book qualification for the biannual tournament.

The Ghanaians started the game like a house on fire full of confidence when Jodan Ayew gave them the lead with a powerful strike into the top-left corner. Angola got a lifeline back into the game when Zito Luvumbo was brought down in the box by Gideon Mensah.

However, Ghana's goalkeeper, Manaf Nurudeen, stood up to the occasion with a superb save to deny the equalizer and maintain the lead. The Black Stars were able to keep Angola at bay as the first half ended 1-0.

Angola came back into the game 64th minute as Luvumbo connected with a fantastic header to beat goalkeeper Nurudeen and take the game level with the game ending 1-1. The Black Stars remain third on the group table with three points while Angola top the group with 12 points.

What is next for Ghana?

The Black Stars will now shift attention to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where the Black Stars will need to get back on their feet and put the disappointment of AFCON behind them.

The victory put Angola top of the group with a game to spare ahead of their match day 6 fixture.

Nigeria ended Ghana's 17-year unbeaten run in July 2001 in the return leg of the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. The first leg of the fixture which ended in a draw was played in Ghana had been filled with much drama and controversies and an angry reaction from fans as well.

Ghana lost their opening game at the AFCON 2023 to Cape Verde, then proceeded to draw at two other games when they were facing Egypt and Mozambique. This eventually resulted in their exit from the tournament.

Before André‘s apology, the Ghana Football Association had sacked their coach, Chris Hughton, who had been coaching the Black Stars since February 2023. After sacking him, they dissolved the technical team and resolved to design a roadmap for the future of Ghanaian football.

André said in his video that he takes full responsibility for their loss and understands the reasons for the backlash the team has received so far. He also says that he believes this loss will make them stronger.

To conclude, he said “We are Ghana… We are never going to give up… We’ll rise and shine again… to make sure to put our flag where it belongs… May God bless our homeland Ghana.”

The Black Stars of Ghana had suffered a defeat in the final minutes of their opening fixture of AFCON 2023 with Cape Verde picking up all three points in the fixture which was played on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

According to media outlets and reports on the Black Stars of Ghana's trip back to the hotel after the fixture, the head coach of the national side Chris Hughton was reportedly attacked by a Ghanaian football fan.

Chris Hughton was reportedly helped by the security around and other diplomats from Ghana as well. There has been no official report from the Ghanaian football federation about the incident and as such details of the rumoured attack are limited.
