In an official announcement today, Friday, August 12, 2022, Wizkid and Tems' 'Essence' was confirmed by Billboard to have set a new and unmatched record on the chart.

'Essence' became the first and the only song to spend a year in the top 10 of the Billboard R&B/ Hip Hop airplay chart.

Billboard revealed:

The song entered the tier on the chart dated Aug. 21, 2021, and has never left – a run of 52 consecutive weeks as of the list dated Aug. 13, 2012. The anniversary is secured as the song slides 3-4 despite a 5% gain in weekly audience to 16.7 million in the week ending Aug. 4, according to Luminate.

The Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Song chart is set to go live on the billboard website on March 29, 2022, and the chart would rank the top 50 popular afrobeats songs in the United States.

This is a big leap for Afrobeats as a whole. It is fast becoming a global sound, and the artists are also becoming a force to be reckoned with as major international collaborations have been recorded so far.

Wizkid now ties the African legend, Cesaria Evora, to have the longest-charting album on the Billboard World Album Charts with 66 weeks.

The Cape Verdean singer, Cesaria Evora, with her Grammy award-winning album, Cesária, had spent a total of 66 weeks on the charts peaking at the number 2 position, which made her the only African to spend that long on the charts.

Starboy Wizkid has equalled that record with his ' Made in Lagos ' album that has also spent a total of 66 weeks on the Billboard charts, and it still seems that it might still be on the charts. Give us that kind of global campaign — treat Afrobeats like a pop record and not a tastemaker record or something that cool urban kids in the diaspora listen to. How often do you see an American artist get signed and he or she already has 5 million followers on their own? Even 1 million? And you don’t want to give them the same push as Bieber? If [African artists] even had 25% of that push, Davido and Eazi would be billionaires. That’s the vision I want for Afrobeats. They haven’t even begun to scratch the surface. But when they do, it’s going to explode. What we’re enjoying now is the blood, sweat and tears that we’ve been putting up as individual artists.

Nigerian Afro-fusion artistes, Burna Boy had a chat recently with BillBoard where he talked about how far he wants to take his song, being a Nigerian artiste and his African Giant Album.

Speaking about how far he wants to take his song, the singer said his plan is to go global and penetrate unfamilair countries with his music. He revealed that after his 17 dates tour, he intends performing in countries like China.

Speaking about his growth in Nigeria in 2018, Burna revealed that Nigerians love right now because he's loved by the world but he's just an ordinary artiste who wants to make music.

He said ;

“Nigerians love me a lot more now because they can see that the whole world likes me, too. They think I’m something special, but I’m not. I’m just a human whose skill is making music. Way I see it, everyone plays their own role in the world, and no role is more important than the other.”

In the interview, it was also disclosed that Burna Boy is presently worth 22 Million Naira but even at that,m he doesn't consider himself rich because he believes one can only be rich as where they're from.

“You are only as rich as where you come from, and Nigeria has a lot of poverty.”

Selecting artistes to watch out for, Burna Boy picked Zlatan, Naira Marley, and Teni. This is good as it also gave artistes like Naira Marley and Zlatan international coverage, but the downside to it is that it also included in its reported Zlatan's present case of Cybercrime.

Mentioned in this interview was also his African Giant album which the singer revealed is heavily Afro-fusion, a genre he has successfully pushed.
