Following the recently concluded BET Awards 2024 and the lack of nominations of some of Africa's biggest stars, here is a list of artists and albums that were eligible but didn't receive a nomination.

What is the eligibility period for the BET Awards?

As per the media powerhouse Billboard, the eligibility period for the 2024 BET Awards spans from March 2023 to March 2024. This period allows for the inclusion of all songs and albums released within this timeframe, making them eligible for nomination consideration at the awards ceremony.

Artists who have experienced significant success during this time period are also eligible for nomination.

African songs and artists that didn't receive a nomination at the BET Awards

Davido

After the release of his Grammy-nominated Timeless album, many believe that Davido's international success skyrocketed, firmly establishing him as one of the most accomplished African artists on the global stage.

Following the album's release, the singer embarked on a worldwide tour, captivating audiences in some of the most prestigious venues across the US, UK, and Canada.

However, fans and industry observers were surprised and disappointed when Davido's name was not included in the list of nominees for the Best International Act at the BET Awards 2024.

Rema

Despite winning multiple awards and hosting an iconic sold-out concert at the O2 Arena in 2023, the singer and performer Rema was not included in the list of nominees for the 2024 BET Awards.

It seems that his significant achievements have been overlooked by the award ceremony organizers.

Uncle Waffles

An explosive 2023 US and Europe Tour as well as the release of her highly acclaimed EP did not earn Uncle Waffles a BET Awards nod in the best International Act category to the shock of many.

It remains to be seen if there are new specifications or criteria involved in the awards nomination process.

Ghanaian sensation, Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong popularly known as Black Sherif won his first BET award for Best International Flow at the 2023 Hip Hop Awards hosted in Atlanta on Tuesday, October 23, 2023. The Award show was recorded on Tuesday and will be shown live on October 10, 2023.

In this category, Black Sherif defeated eight other competitors, including prominent musicians Central Cee, Gazo, J Hus, and AKA. Black Sherif is Ghana's second International Flow category winner following Sarkodie's win in 2019. With his most famous song, Kwaku the Traveller, playing in the background, Black Sherif walked the stage to accept his award.

Remember that Black Sherif was nominated in the Best International Flow category at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in 2022 alongside Benjamin Epps (France), Central Cee (UK), Blxckie (South Africa), Haviah Mighty (Canada), Knucks (UK), Le Juiice (France), Nadia Nakai (Zimbabwe), and Tasha & Tracie (Brazil). Benjamin Epps was named the winner of the 'Best International Flow' award in 2022.

Shatta Wale took to his Twitter to congratulate Black Sherif; "Chale let's say congrats to Blacko. He is a cobra."

Black Sherif recently dropped two singles as part of the Take Care of Yourself Blacko project, which includes tracks like Yaya and Simmer Down, co-produced by Joker Nharnah and Samsney. Additionally, his hit song Kwaku the Traveller secured the 12th position on the Billboard Top Triller Global Chart in February of 2022.

During the promotion of the album, he expressed some incendiary opinions about the afrobeats genre. He claimed that there isn’t much substance in the genre and that he is the pioneer of ‘afro-fusion’. This has polarised his fanbase into two groups. Those who feel offended by this dismissal of a global genre and those who agree with him.

Regardless, Burna Boy got three wins at the 2023 Headies. This makes him one of the most awarded artists of the night. Now it looks like the African Giant has done it again. Burna Boy has gotten seven nominations at the prestigious BET Awards slated to happen in October.

Burna Boy blazes past J Cole’s six nods with his nominations in seven categories. He makes history as the first Nigerian artist with the most BET nominations in the same year.

The prestigious BET Awards are coming back this October for their 2023 edition. The award is celebrating 50 years of recognising the best talents in the music industry and honouring them.

Cardi B, 21 Savage, Drake, and Burna Boy have the highest number of nominations. Cardi B and 21 Savage lead with 12 nominations each. Drake has nine nominations, while Burna Boy and DJ Khaled have seven each.

Several artists from the continent, aside from Burna Boy were nominated for the awards. AKA, K.O and Sampa The Great are among the African artists nominated at the BET.

The Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer was nominated with other talented acts such as Fireboy, Dave from the UK, Dinos from France, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Major League Djz from South Africa, and Tayc from France. This is the first international award Tems is receiving for her own record while for the night, she already received an award for her record with Wizkid and Justin Bieber.

In receiving the award, Tems gave a brief speech dedicating her award to every young woman striving to one day live their dreams. She said;

Thank you so much for this, thank you so much. It's an honour... I mean, this is my first award show that I'm winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home. Where I'm from, things like this don't happen.

In receiving the award, Tems who was present appreciated the BET Awards saying;

"Thank you, BET... This award is for really Wiz, Africa, and I just want to say that great thing is happening out of Africa right now and the light is on everyone there... This is dedicated to Africa and to Nigeria. Thank you."

Nigerian singer Fireboy DML would be representing Africa on the biggest stage as he would perform at the award ceremony on the 27th of June 2022 alongside the following artists:

 Lizzo, Joey Bada$$, Latto, Chlöe, Babyface, Ella Mai, Givēon, Kirk Franklin, Muni Long, Maverick City Music  Roddy Ricch, Jack Harlow and Chance The Rapper.

Wizkid following his two nominations for the BET Awards in two distinct categories has become the most nominated African artist at the BET awards with a total of 8 award nominations. Wizkid has the highest number of nominations for any African artist in the history of the BET awards. Wizkid also bagged over 7 award nominations at the Headies awards 2022 as well.

As fans gear up for his new album 'More Love Less Ego' on the 5th of August 2022, starboy just keeps setting new records and breaking them as well.
