P Square New Music
P Square

Being Categorised as the legendary duo in African music for P Square is never an understatement, when was why the news of the reunion was met with loud cheers. Although Paul and Peter Okoye have been doing music separately for the past five years, this is the first time they will be teasing a new song or album release on social media.

READ MORE: VIDEO: Rudeboy - Reality

P Square has been responsible for some of the greatest hits and albums in Nigeria to date, even though their last album together was in 2014. The multiple award winning duo announced their reunion in November 2021 and went ahead to deliver a stellar performance in their first concert together in years on the 25th of December 2021. The concert was graced by fans and top celebrities who had missed the multi-talented duo together doing music.

With just photoshoots and no official date as to when to expect the release, fans can't seem to wait for the official announcement of a release date. P Square has always delivered with their new music in the past, which is why the anticipation for this has been at its peak for them as they haven't been able to contain their excitement.

Best New Music: Wizkid - Simi - DJ Neptune - TEMS

Wizkid – No Stress

As we continue the build up to Made in Lagos, Wizkid drops the second single off the tape. "No Stress," like its title, sets off to a relaxing pace as the Starboy croons about "this pretty lady."

TEMS – Damages

"Try Me" set Tems on course to be a music star, which is exactly what she's become. Scheduled to share her debut EP For Broken Ears next Friday, the artist shares "Damages," a new record which intimates on a relationship, the singer asking "tell me what you need from me" on the chorus.

DJ Neptune ft. Runda – Bembe

It's widely acclaimed that Neptune has no bad songs. His latest single –a warm afro pop number– furthers that thought. Runda, quite astonishingly, engages the ears in fresh ways as the synthesized production calls the body to dance.

Simi – NO LONGER BENEFICIAL

After smash hit "Duduke," Simi returns with the Restless EP looming. The first single from that is this record, a stripped-down effort that emphasizes end of what used to be convenient friends-with-benefit arrangement.

Fameye ft. M.anifest – Asem

Talented Ghanaian musician Fameye recently shared his album Greater Than. On boisterous opener "Asem" he features legendary GH emcee M.anifest, and they both do a madness, setting the scene for what follows.

Darey & Patoranking – Jojo

On his second single since making a return to music, veteran act Darey teams up with Patoranking for "Jojo," a banging track with great replay value.

Alpha P – Quarantine

The teenage act Alpha P is one of the most promising acts around. Earlier this year, he shared his debut EP King of the Wolves. "Quarantine," his latest song, runs just under two minutes but is quickly enriched the ambient vibe he's known for.

Dunnie ft. Oxlade – Overdose (Remix)

A while ago Dunnie shared the FOUR EP. Here, she features the budding Oxlade (from Africa) to serenade on a record off that tape. "Overdose" is lifted by the sweet vocals and excitable production.

Zarion Uti ft. BUJU – Rain or Shine

Two of Nigeria's promising artists combine for this serenading chune. Zarion and BUJU both have standout vocals and they combine to fine effect on this record.

Skales ft. Tekno – Badman Love (Remix)

Having collaborated in the past, it's no surprise how beautifully Skales and Tekno lend their voices to this warm number. The latter's usage of adlibs on "Beautiful Onyinye" by P Square was also delightful to my ears.

Cracker Mallo ft. Olamide – Palanshe

In-house YBNL producer Cracker Mallo has a new tape out. A Friendly Introduction to Sound features Fireboy DML and DJ Neptune among others. "Palanshe" features the street hop beat you'd most likely find Olamide spazzing on.

WAJI – City on Stars

WAJI describes her music as psychedelic and transcendent, inspired by artists like Lady Donli, SZA and Santi. Her new record "City on Stars" is a great record and draws one into WAJI's ambient world with every listen.

Best New Nigerian Music: Davido - Niniola - Olamide - Wande Coal

Davido on the cover of Afrobeats Hits playlist on Spotify

Joyce Olong – Outta Town

One of the most beneficial moments of art is when music tells a nuanced and personal tale, and embedded in great music. Ms. Olong, who featured on 3rty's Blue Crystal tape, is one such musician. "Outta Town" moves languidly so you hear each line which drips with poetry and simple wisdom. "Outta town/ Oh you must be dangerous in it," she sings, detailing her curiosity with the song's character.

Wande Coal – Check

Anyone who knows Nigerian music can't understate Wande Coal's influence on the styles of today's top acts. Himself still much a top artist, he shared the long awaited Realms EP. "Check" is a favorite, a serene vibe laid on warm production and driven, no doubt, by Wande's vocal and lyrical presence.

Bella Alubo – Gbolahan

From her collab EP with former label mate YCEE (Late Night Vibrations), Bella announced herself as one to watch for. She's since put out tapes and singles independently, delivering music to an engaging base sold on her charm and witty songwriting. "Gbolahan" furthers these ideals, the artist revealing a sardonic tone in bad bi*ch fashion.

Olamide – Eru

For as long as we can remember Olamide has bended the streets to his sound, foreshadowing some of the brightest moments in Nigerian Pop since he made his bow more than a decade ago. His EMPIRE deal binds him to a 2020 album and in anticipation of a busy last quarter, he's shared "Eru," an hypnotic banger which spells for an enjoyable time out.

Ogranya – Lagbaja

Peruzzi might be earlier, but Ogranya is definitely onto something atop the "Lagbaja" train. A vocalist per excellence, the artist's ice cool delivery finds the perfect vehicle in his choice of words, free flowing and emotive. The song moves like part of a bedroom/sex playlist but it's actually a heartbroken rendition of one man's loss measured against the entire world. Interpolating the titular legend's no-do-gra-gra on the outro turns to be genius too. Really love this record.

Mr. Eazi & Major Lazer ft. Nicki Minaj & K4mo – Oh Ma Gawd

Since he made the Lagos to London album, Mr. Eazi has been very intentional with his international collaborations, bringing his unique mix of Nigerian and Ghanaian sonic influence to foreign sounds. "Oh Ma Gawd" is the Caribbean-influenced bop with Major Lazer, and features American superstar Nicki Minaj and K4mo. Upon release, it went number one on US iTunes.

Stadic, Jonny Blaze, Niniola – Sibe

Afro House queen Niniola combines with a duo of producers for the body jerking "Sibe," a record which puts her powerful vocals to entrancing effect.

Straffitti – NECESSARY

Off his 6-track EP STRAFF FROM NIGERIA, the artist presents "NECESSARY," the project opener and an aspirational tune in sing-rap delivery and draws from the mid tempo production, a mix of lo-fi pop and afro pop. Do well to check out the entire tape.

Jinmi Abduls ft. Oxlade & Joeboy – Jowo

With two excellent mix tapes to his name, Jinmi Abduls is worth every acclaim. The artist is set to release an EP (perhaps) this year and he calls on Oxlade and Joeboy for "Jowo," an exciting collaboration which espouses the intricacies of a love affair.

Eniola Havoc ft. Picazo Rhap – No Play Play

One of the stalwarts of the Bando Boyz Movement, Eniola Havoc leads by example, pushing songs and projects which sell his youth and charismatic appeal. His latest effort is a Drill record which features Picazo Rhap and is packed with energetic and skillfully laced bars. Watch out for Havoc, folks.

Davido – FEM

Afro pop icon Davido went offline but his personality and fans' expectations for new music kept his name abuzz, and with the release of his new record, he got back into the conversations fully. Suggested to be a diss track to a popular contemporary, the record has all the potential to dominate the rest of 2020. Plus, there's that looming possibility of A Better Time album. We literally couldn't have asked for a better time.

Best New Music

Oxlade - DKT

Oxlade – DKT (Dis Kind Thing)

Since his debut project OXYGENE dropped, young Afro Fusion act Oxlade has positioned himself as one of the most soulful acts operating today. "DKT," his new record, reiterates that notion, a fluid love record which airs between wistfulness and romance.

Ice Prince ft. Tekno – Make Up Your Mind

Many are quick to discredit Ice Prince's music in recent times but the iconic rapper has been making some of his best records. "Make Up Your Mind" features familiar synths and an emotive performance from Tekno, whose input leads out Ice Prince's, bossy as ever with bars about a woman's indecision.

3rty – Ice Cream

He describes his sound as "herbal music" and nothing could be truer. 3rty's new project Blue Crystal EP, a compact tape of four excellent songs, is something of an opus. Drawing from a rich blend of sounds, the artist and producer etches beautiful and sometimes haunting stories to go along with. "Ice Cream" is a folksy tale about a lady whose fortunes pit her against tough life decisions. It's a subject rapper Falz has caught flak for but 3rty handles this terrain with zest and care, doing diligence to the truth of the story.

Jess ETA – Pull Me Close

Off the artist's Balance EP, comes this earworm of a track. "Pull Me Close" blends various influences like the flow of contemporary Afro Pop, an Highlife edge to the tone, and sentimentality which drives the record to great emotional height. It's the kind of song to soundtrack chill moments of togetherness or perhaps wistful longing for one. You should check out the entire Balance tape.

Teni – Wanneka Women Anthem

If there's one song Teni knows how to make, it's the rousing anthem. Her new record might come without the fanfare typically afforded an artist of her status, but it's a bright record and Teni's lively vocals ride as beautifully as ever. One time for the women!

Bella Shmurda – Dangbana Orisa

Bella Shmurda has, through his career, keenly evoked the spirituality and grit of Nigeria's street monarchs, and "Dangbana Orisa" tightens his grip on that demography, a midtempo effort pulled from producer Rexxie's folder.

Ladipoe ft. Joeboy – Yoruba Samurai

Mavin signed rapper Ladipoe is always one to push a concept with his music, and "Yoruba Samurai" is no different. Positioning themselves as the good guys, Poe and Joeboy turn in a thriller like performance, hitting high points. Speaking to Notjustok about the song, Ladipoe said "the whole idea of the Yoruba Samurai was for me taking two whole ideas and trying to build something new. Also trying to create a new narrative. We all know of the Yoruba Demon; well, I've introduced you to the Yoruba Samurai."

Del B ft. Walshy Fire, Kes, Flavour & Wizkid – Consider II

Pooling top talent from around the world, revered producer Del B's new song is a sentimental string heavy affair, taking from the full experience which is the artists' voices, and spinning an endearing plea around it.

Oga Network ft. Harrysong – Who Ask You (Remix)

If the original of this record didn't get your attention, first released some weeks ago, trust this remix will. Oga Network, an astute entertainer with a knack for vibrant proverbs and a slick delivery to match, features Harrysong on "Who Ask You," the man doing a madness on a subgenre he founded. At the end of every line, you're sure to be saying "who ask you," absorbed in the world of these acts. If "resist the urge to shalaye" had a Nigerian Pop equivalent, it's this song.

Sinach – Peace in the Storm

Sinach is literally a genre of her own; powerful and soothing music never sounded so gospel –that's why every new record from the maverick gets a thorough listen in this house. "Peace in the Storm" sounds literally like a dose of peace, and given especially the nature of 2020, is the record every christian faithful should start the new week with.

DJ Tunez & J. Anthoni – Differently

The Starboy DJ Tunez is always good vibes on wax, and his latest effort, after the humongous "PAMI," is no different, even though the title begs otherwise. Alongside J. Anthoni who turns in a patois-laced contribution, the record flies on laid back vibes, evoking dimly lit scenes.

Suté ft. Ayüü & TOMI – Time

Consistently releasing projects, Suté has never been one to relent. His new project, the 7-track EP Colors, features some of the most exciting alternative talents in Nigeria. "Time" is a trippy listen, featuring introspective lines rap and sung over ominous keys and generally moody production.

Fabian Blu ft. Naira Marley & Moh Bad – Instagram

Although Naira Marley featured spectacularly on another Instagram title, he turns up for label signee Fabian Blu's effort, a prayerful record which features excitable verses and string progression.

Nsikak ft. Show Dem Camp & The Cavemen. – Dance 4 Me

Still cresting on the waves from their potential classic ROOTS, Highlife group The Cavemen. join revered guitarist Nsikak and iconic duo Show Dem Camp for "Dance 4 Me," a groovy palm wine session carried by the artists' known foray into the sound. Come for the star studded lineup, live for Tec's eternal verse, Nsikak's ethereal strings and the haunting melodies of The Cavemen.

Sir Bastien ft. Eri Ife – Late Night

Sir Bastien is a most impeccable artist. He works outside the realms of popular imagination and creates earworms from tropical sounds. His latest EP, Mango Island, is yet an homage to his exertions and the journey is filled with gems. "Late Night" is a Dancehall appropriating record which builds on subtle drums and synths, as well as laid back singing from both artists.

Best New Music is our weekly roundup of songs to listen to.

Victony – Space & Time

Saturn is a powerful, beautiful and ambitious project from Victony, who's been a hot drop on my TL the past weeks. "Space & Time," off the 6-track EP, is a standout for me, an introspective number about needing some time alone. As with the entire project, it's as refreshing as a drink of cold water after a long trek.

Patoranking – Lion in the Jungle

Along with the slew of new music which hit the stores, Patoranking's Three, his third album and follow up to his indecisive Wilmer, also counted. Led by the single "Abule," the artist had many keen on what sounds he was gravitating towards, and listened keenly. "Lion in the Jungle" samples a Bob Marley interview and interestingly toes the same line of musical and political ingenuity, as the late Reggae great once did.

Terry Tha Rapman ft. M.I. Abaga – FTW

Produced by M.I., "FTW" is a deep cut from two of Nigeria's most consistent lyricists. Combining Terry Tha Rapman's everyday themes with M.I's outlandish claims on the state of Hip Hop in Nigeria, this record is a must-listen.

Olayinka Ehi – Shake

Coming off her excellent feature on Adekunle Gold's Afro Pop, Olayinka Ehi has shared her new record. "Shake" is a joyful song which enjoins the listener to dance, drawing from Ms. Ehi's soulful vocals and the riveting production.

Chef Xido ft. Clerkz – VIBRATION

Chef Xido is a young artist based out of Abuja and Anambra where he studies in UNIZIK. Remarkably aware of Afrobeats and its intersection with Hip Hop, Chef has always infused a high level of witticism in his songs. "VIBRATION" is no different, a collaboration with Clerkz which will have you on a groovy mood in no time.

VIBRATION

A single off his fourth coming EP, Chef xido teams up with Clerkz to create a master piece, a sound both for the sane and insane...reflecting on the effects of weed smoke, love , money (the need for it), society and change.

Larry Gaaga ft. Joeboy – Slow Burner

Larry Gaaga is one of those few artists and A&R who never puts a foot wrong, especially with featured artists and direction. His latest is a collaboration with hit maker Joeboy, who leads the song from start to finish with his impeccable vocals and songwriting. As the title gives, it's a slow burner, an affair suited to the dimmer rooms and intoxicated nights.

Emiboy ft. Teni – I Go Pay

I Go Pay” is a riveting duet, carried by the energetic delivery of Emiboy and Teni’s charismatic vocals. Together, over Killertunes’ mid tempo beat, they excite as role players – the male artist being the enamored lover with intentions to spoil his lady; Teni the lover, eager to be showered with much money as the love she offers.

MOJO – Hulabalu

One of the most exciting young rappers in the game, MOJO has got rhymes for years. Building himself a credible fan base, he's taken to consistency and skill, fascinating on a host of features and his own songs. "Hulabalu," his latest, has him rapping over a funk style beat, every bar hypnotic as the production.

Tiwa Savage – Celia's Song

Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage recently shared her new project Celia, described as an ode to the powerful woman. The closer to the album, co-written with Moelogo, is "Celia's Song," a beautiful and ethereal rendition to Jesus, recognizing the influence of the divine in her life.

CheekyChizzy – Onyeoma

CheekyChizzy is one artist to watch out for. Recently sharing his EP Facility Is Not A Tata (Wave 1), he got top acts like D'Banj, Wande Coal, Peruzzi among others, to feature on his debut project, a great feat in itself. But my standout from the tape is a solo effort, the regal "Onyeoma," which blends scintillating delivery with bubbly Highlife production.

Nasty C – King Shit

On his long awaited album Zulu Man With Some Power, Nasty C affirms his greatness over wavy production, a blend which goes perfect for the Durban MC. "King Shit" is the opener of the project and expectedly, fills that role with braggadocio and introspection, Nasty spitting truth after truth in every bar.

Krizbeatz & Tekno – Toe Toe

The pair of Krizbeatz and Tekno has an impeccable list of collabs, from the artist's one-song hit run and the producer's own projects, most recently African Time. On "Toe Toe," Krizbeatz pairs Tekno's witty and sultry singing with a House type beat, inspiring gentle taps of the feet or bumping heads. I just want your toe toe..

King Perryy ft. Psycho YP – YKTFV

Known for his Afro Dancehall calisthenics, King Perryy switches things on his new record, a bouncy Grime-esque beat where he basically talks the talk. Featuring the most featured artist out of Nigeria, Psycho YP, for yet another guest verse, "YKTFV" manages to wield even more panache and gravitas.

Abstraktt ft. Blaqbonez, Alpha Ojini & Payper Corleone – Crash Course

Pairing some of the most skilled rappers working in the game, this song is such a perfect song: lyricism, production, delivery and vision all tick correct. All four verses hold their own appeal and combine to make the song one of the most fulfilling rap record I've heard in a while.

Best New Music: Seyi Shay – Fireboy DML – Cuppy – Adekunle Gold

Best New Music: Seyi Shay – Fireboy DML – Cuppy – Adekunle Gold

Best New Music is our weekly roundup of songs to listen to.

The Cavemen. – Bena

The Cavemen. are a two-man Highlife group who produced most of Lady Donli's Enjoy Your Life. Exciting with singles like "Akaraka" and "Bolo Bolo," their debut album ROOTS was hugely anticipated. Now it's here we know we love it, and especially "Bena," a grand song which echoes of Chief Osadebe and relates the familiar tale of unrequited love.

Fireboy DML ft. Wande Coal – Spell

Off the artist's sophomore album APOLLO (check out our review) comes the dream collabo with Afro Pop icon Wande Coal. Pheelz brings the beat and the duo of sensational singers make sure the superstar lineup produces a credible song. Surely one of the standouts from the album.

Cuppy ft. Teni – Litty Lit

Over the weekend, Cuppy shared Original Copy, her debut tape, and we love this record with Teni. Groovy, energetic and melodious, "Litty Lit" is great vibes everyone needs to rock to.

Remy Baggins ft. Zilla Oaks – W.I.G.B.?

One of the most consistent performers in Nigeria, Remy Baggins has hardly let up in pushing out his music. Even with the bunch of new music, Baggins' new tape AMARERASU! stands out, a fresh lean on Trap and emo rap sounds. "W.I.G.B?" features the similarly consistent Zilla Oaks and both acts spin a banger of a record, speaking on the love for money and subsequently the focus on one's paper chase.

K1 De Ultimate ft. Teni – Omo Naija

Off the back of Fuji The Sound the new EP from the legend comes this exciting collaboration with Teni. The tape was A&Red by the iconic Bankulli (who also worked with Beyoncé on Black is King) and is (expectedly) a more modern take on Fuji sound and should appeal across demographies.

Blaqbonez – Big Brother

Chocolate City-affiliated rapper Blaqbonez has shared his latest single, coming after his buzz hit "Haba." The new song sees Blaq return to his firebrand rapping, drawing a line between himself and everyone else doing it. He's big brother and he's watching, this wavy record says.

melvitto ft. Gabzy – Trouble

Singer Gabzy and producer melvitto have enjoyed a great working partnership, the former exciting over mel's laid back pop/r&B beats. "Trouble" updates that catalog, Gabzy detailing a problematic affair over the chill production of his collaborator.

Adekunle Gold ft. Olayinka Ehi – Exclusive

AG Baby is your Baby goes the tag. Afro Pop vol. 1 goes the album and off that, is this stunning record with Olayinka Ehi, co-written with Dwin The Stoic. Taking on the subject of an open relationship, both AG and Ms. Ehi deliver a convincing report on their fictional narrative, carried by Pheelz's masterly production.

Tomi Owó – Beautiful

Since I heard her on Alpha Ojini's "Love Clouds," I've known Tomi Owó to be a unique talent with a most angelic voice. "Beautiful" is a demonstration of this prowess, a truly beautiful song which reaches within and inspires greatness in a listener. Wouldn't you rather be a listener? (The production is bonkers too.)

Ignis Brothers ft. Phlow – Time Go Come

The Ignis Brothers are an alternative band founded by artist and writer Dwin The Stoic. They recently shared their debut album The Cost of Our Lives, a beautiful somber treatment of themes related to mental health. "Time Go Come" is one of the highest points of the tape, featuring rapper Phlow who joins the Brothers to affirm the possibility of a better future.

Solana ft. Joeboy – Far Away

A mesmerizing and beautiful effort from Solana, featuring Joeboy with the impeccable verse. The production is lit with colorful synths and both voices are so in the present, so full of energy as they plead with each other to stay.

Seyi Shay ft. YCEE, Zlatan & Small Doctor – Tuale

Seyi Shay assembles a great team to reflect her heart towards the streets, the hustlers and the fans who buy her music. Every feature comes correct (love the YCEE verse a lot) but Seyi Shay owns the song with am impressive rap flow and presence on the record.

DJ Lambo ft. Ice Prince & CKay – Sharpaly

Last week, DJ Lambo shared a single with Iyanya and Lady Donli, off a forthcoming project. A Tale of Two Cities is now out. This record features Ice and CKay and with vocals from Lambo, makes for a bouncy listen, one to inspire reply chants of "sharpaly" or feet taps.

Tomi Thomas – Hopeless Romantic

A gifted musician with a penchant for guitars, Tomi Thomas embraces the mystical and romantic as often spills into his music. The new record leans to the latter, the artist singing as the hopeless romantic till the song closes to an electric guitar solo.

ADH ft. Vector, Psycho YP & Eugy – Man Dem (Remix)

Over a visceral beat with knocks and a light riff, all featured rappers deliver cocksure lyrics and affirm their unique styles.

Best New Music is our weekly roundup of songs to listen to.

Burna Boy – No Fit Vex

Since Burna Boy's Twice As Tall was released, it's been all everyone could talk about, and for good reason. "No Fit Vex," is produced by LeriQ, a soulful record which enjoins one to be the best they could be, wherever the world takes you.

Darey Art Alade – Jah Guide Me

Before going on a brief hiatus from music, "Pray For Me," the record with The Soweto Choir,  was a very popular Darey song. His latest effort toes that religious/aspirational path, featuring powerful production and a virtuoso performance from the R&B legend.

IYKZ – Roots

Taking stock of his place as an African man, IYKZ relates his pride with Blackness over a warm beat with soft drums and horns. His rich voice lends a soothing effect to his rich ideals of Pan-Africanism, making this record one you should check out ASAP.

The Flowolf ft. Dremo & Mayorkun – On A Jay

The DMW folks have been collaborating with themselves since forever. "On A Jay" updates that working partnership, a breezy rap song featuring comical tidbits from all three artists.

Terry Apala & Major Bangz – How Far

Over the weekend, Terry Apala and Major Bangz shared a collaborative effort of six tracks Major Vibes. "How Far" is a lovable cut off the sonic stretching tape, Terry Apala exciting in this role of lover boy.

Y1nka ft. Vader The Wildcard – Shalaye

What happens when "Shalaye," one of the year's buzz words on Nigerian Twitter, gets sonic treatment via the immortal medium of rap? A madness. Y1nka and Vader work as a double edged sword, cutting over a visceral beat with precise takes on social drama and their own lives.

Cuppy ft. Stonebwoy – Karma

Still amping buzz for her debut album Original Copy, superstar DJ Cuppy shares a second single featuring Ghanaian sensation Stonebwoy. Over a thumping Dancehall beat, both acts combine for a credible love duet.

Harrysong – E Be You

The inspiration for Harrysong's new EP Right About Now came from the artist wanting to explore sounds outside the usual gyration Pop he's famous for. "E Be You" is a standout, Harry channelling his soulfulness over gently Reggae-esque instrumental.

André Wolff ft. Ayüü & Psycho YP – Swollen

Nigerian Hip Hop acts have barely given us a moment of rest in 2020, packing bars and hits for days. "Swollen" is a barfest between three skilled pen games united by top production.

Mo'believe – Fàyá

Mo'believe is an exciting talent to watch. His style is Pop fused with traditional Yoruba forms, bestowing on his records a wisdom beyond his years. His new record, "Fàyá" is a vibrant song which speaks poetically on life, its timeless message accompanied by purposeful drums, as it was in the old.

DJ Tunez ft. Adekunle Gold, Wizkid & Omah Lay – PAMI

This super collaboration might have seemed hard to pull off but it was indeed done with some style. Each artist's styles blended effortlessly, their talent as love maestros bare, making the record a completely enjoyable listen.

Wiffer – Forefathers

Listening to the beat of this song, you know it could only inspire the sickest of bars. Listening to Wiffer, you know Igbo boys dey vex, as he raps purposefully about this forebears in rap –especially Igbo rappers like Mr. Raw, Phyno, Zoro– folks he calls his Forefathers. Respect the OGs, they said. Wiffer did, and showed his own talent as an MC with lyricism and flows to last for forever.

Fireboy DML – Tattoo

Much anticipated, the debut project of alternative group Ignis Brothers, The Cost of Our Lives, has been released, a 9-track effort. "Sand and Shells" is produced by Rhaffy and features the haunting lyricism band member Dwin the Stoic is known for, the soothing poetry of Ruth's singing. You should check out the entire project.

Best New Music

Best New Music is our weekly roundup of fresh songs you ought to listen to.

BOJ ft. Davido & Mr. Eazi – Abracadabra

A Summer-themed bop that features the expert contributions of Davido and Mr. Eazi, Alté mainstay BOJ has assembled a super team and unlocked a timeless jam for the happier moments.

Victony – Space & Time

Much of today's youth crave their privacy, as they eagerly sing their songs. Victony's new record is an ethereal effort, situated in the dream-pop excesses of artists brought up on Trap and other forms of emo sounds and art.

Peruzzi – Lagbaja

After a series of controversy which saw him depart social media, Peruzzi made a return to announce a new record. Of course, the Vstix produced song "Lagbaja" is that jam, a high tempo chant-like sound on which Peruzzi flexes his flair for storytelling. If you find yourself feeling like a dreadlocked rasta, all energy and prancing, blame the song!

DJ Kaywise ft. Mayorkun, Naira Marley & Zlatan Ibile – What Type Of Dance (WTOP)

The phenomenal DJ Kaywise has been quiet for a little bit but for a return, he calls up the mammoth trio of Mayorkun, Naira Marley, and Zlatan. As expected, banging production (provided here by Fresh VDM and Echo The Guru), catchy lines, and Zlatan's hilarious adlibs feature. WTOD will have you dancing as it's promised and may even have you (like me) bemoan the necessary closure of nightclubs presently.

Nasty C – Palm Trees

SA rapper Nasty C has been in beast mode, dropping heat after heat as he leads anticipation for his album Zulu Man With Some Power. "Palm Trees" is a bass-heavy trip down the Trap lane, Nasty's cocksure bars steeped in impressionable delivery and bravado. One for the chill moments..

Cracker Mallo ft. Fireboy DML – Wickedest Wyne

Cracker Mallo has been responsible for a number of the warm Afro Pop tunes rocking the airwaves and charts, and on his record, he pairs the lover boy tendencies of frequent collaborator Fireboy DML.

K1 De Ultimate – Awade

Fuji legend K1 De Ultimate recently made a return with "Awade," a glorious song with fine music to go with. The Marshall's voice is pristine and his message timeless, and this record will do wonders for your mind.

Tiwa Savage – Koroba

As we gear for the release of her album Celia sometime this August, Tiwa Savage continues to whet our appetites with singles and collaborations, most recently with Reminisce on the rapper's EP, Vibes and Insha Allah. "Koroba" updates Tiwa's penchant for sultry midtempo Pop bangers, and fashions yet another credible run-up effort for her album.

Not.Nilc – She Lie

This song is an alluring rendition of relationship troubles, in this case, a distance problem, as the rapper speaks of chasing the money. Delivered fluidly in the sing-song rap style of Not.Nilc, this song is as enjoyable as it is technical... You'll definitely love it.

Don Mappy – Wondaful

An affiliate of the Bando Boyz collective, Don Mappy has released 3 bodies of work so far. His latest, Urban Love Progressions, is a 7-track effort that showcases his flair for laidback Afro Life sounds and features budding artists like Bizzonthetrack and Eniola Havoc among others. "Wondaful" is a personal favorite, a luxurious jam carried by the rich timbre of Mappy's voice, the chill production...

Kemena – International

Right now, Kemena has less than 700 followers on Twitter but thank the stars hype never meant quality. Or else I might have never have listened to his superb project, Bond (which I'm definitely reviewing), which features some of the most fascinating sounds I've heard all year. "International" features a prominent guitar string played to accentuate the sweet melancholy of Kemena's vocals, who promises hell on anyone or anything which makes his lover cry. After listening to the album, be sure to leave a follow and typical-excited comment on his socials cos hype pays las las.

DJ Lambo ft. Iyanya & Lady Donli – Bella

Who would have executed the (unlikely) pairing of R&B Pop macho guy Iyanya with Alté royalty Lady Donli. Who, if not DJ Lambo? "Bella" is an excitable record that sounds unlike anything you've heard, and both featured acts employ their famed voices to great effect, creating a stunning record that seems like the first single from a forthcoming Lambo project.

Oxlade – DKT (Dis Kind Thing)

Since the release of his OXYGENE debut, Oxlade has been a buzzing act around these parts. "DKT", his first solo since that EP, is produced by usual suspect Spax, a chill vibe evoked by gentle drums and horns, while Oxlade's trademark vocals excite with a readymade love story.

Listen on SoundCloud

Yemi Alade – True Love

After earning the plaudits of the millions who viewed Beyoncé's Black Is King, Nigerian superstar Yemi Alade returns with her own music. "True Love" is a feel-good record carried by sing-songy melodies and bright harmonies and percussions. Yemi Alade comes across as cherry, taking the beat as it comes, and generally allowing the space for a sing-along and were you audacious, outlandish dance moves.

Crayon ft. London – On Code

Crayon has enjoyed a productive 2020, dipping in and out of releases with his upbeat, romantic and lyrical take on percussion-based Afro Pop. One of the Mavin artist's frequent collaborators is producer London, and on the artist's latest song, they locked powers again on the party starter "On Code".

Ilaye – Fix.

Known for her deft navigation around the themes of life and love, Ilaye has enchanted a small cult of fans with her sound, a mix of R&B and alternative Pop. "Fix," her new record, is a calm song in which the artist demands more from a lover; Ilaye sings to perfection as her angelic voice hits all the right notes and leaves you gasping for air.
