There has been a lot of speculation in the media concerning the future of both Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell as they were both left out of the squad against Manchester City in the opening game of the season. Maresca was asked about both players in a pre-match press conference ahead of the Blues Europa Conference League game against Servette on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

He said,

"I have been honest, he will have no minutes here. I am not saying Raheem is not a good player but I prefer different kinds of wingers. It’s simple. I told Raheem he’s going to struggle to get minutes with us. Chilly, he’s going to struggle here too”.

He also spoke about the narrative going on in the media that he had to deal with 42 players.

"I am not working with 42 players. I am working with 21 players. The other 15-20 players are training apart. I don't see them. It's not a mess like it looks from outside. Absolutely not. They can even have 20 years contract, it’s not my point. I don’t care."

Chelsea supporters will hope that the club can sort of the future of the players before the end of the current transfer window.

Following the anxious wait for an update on the injury of the wing-back Ben Chilwell by millions of fans worldwide, Chelsea, in an official statement, shared the status of his condition as well as revealed if he would be available for the World Cup 2022.

Chelsea confirmed that Chilly would miss out of the FIFA World Cup 2022, scheduled to kick off in Qatar on the 20th of November 2022. The Blues explained that the wingback had sustained a significant injury in his hamstring and would have to begin his rehabilitation immediately.

It was difficult. I have been asked quite a lot recently since I've started playing and the way I have answered is cliche, but it's football. These are things that are going to happen in the majority of players in their professional career where they have low moments, high moments. The way I try to look at it, I was disappointed that I wasn't playing in such a massive competition in England. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. But the way I was trying to go into the whole thing was that it happens to a lot of people in football. I just need to make sure I am ready. I will come through this stronger and better on the other side.

Chilwell lost his place in the England team to Luke Shaw and Karen Tripper during the Euro 2020. He also lost his spot to Marcos Alonso during the start of the season at Chelsea.
