This is not a paid promotion, this is Fan Affairs, and I'm probably the only 'Hamisu Breaker's fan in South-West, Nigeria.

The Hausas (fondly called Arewa on twitter) are one of Africa's most populous ethnic groupings, primarily found in northern Nigeria and southern Niger in west Africa. Their music is commonly categorized as ceremonial music (rok'on fada), royal praise songs (yabon sarakai), and rural traditional folk music.

Their folk music has contributed significantly to the development of Nigerian music. However, the inability to understand the Hausa language has hindered the rate of acceptance just as songs of any language you don't understand. People tend to listen to music they can understand, even if it lacked lyricism.

However, music is can be a form of adventure to those who love it and see it as such.

Personally, on some days, I travel the world through music. I'm not capping, when I tell you my playlist is so diverse. On it, you'd see all types of genre from different parts of the world, from native Russian music, to Fuji music, Indian songs. You will see few of Namadingo's records like 'Maury'. Of course there are many like me. People who explores the world through music.

And oh!, Namadingo is an African artist from Malawi. Fondly called 'Dr Namandigo' by his fans on YouTube, known for the mash-up he did with the late Giddess Chalamanda titled 'Linny Hoo'.

Although, the likes of Magnito, MI Abaga, Sixfootplus, ClassiQ and host of others, are doing Hausa raps, Hamisu is not rapping, but has taken the production to another level by infusing modern beat without loosing its touch. First off;

Who is Hamisu Breaker?

His real name is 'Hamisu Sa’id Yusuf', and was born in Kano. If you mention his name in the commercial city of Kano, Nigeria, you'd see women, men, and children alike, going gaga. Simply put, they love him.

Hamisu breaker
Hamisu Breaker

Hamisu Breaker got the name 'Breaker' in his early days of 'Break Dancing'. He started his music career in secondary school, and has produced several musical projects.

How did I discover Hamisu Breaker?

My guy, Victor had just finished watching Arsenal's highlight on YouTube. He was angry for missing the match, because he had to work on sunday. Also, Arsenal lost the match.

In my mind, I was like "sheybi na Arsenal... what were you expecting?, awon heart breaker FC." No shades to Arsenal Fans though. You guys are my Hero.

Not to leave the screen blank, he decided to play a musical YouTube video; Lo, and behold, he landed on one of Hamisu's popular song at the time titled 'Jaruma'

I didn't understand the hausa language, but the tune was different and so was the presentation - stiff, local and dramatic. Lol. My Arewa people. I love them. As I listen, I got stuck. I remember playing it more than three times that same day. Then I reached out to my friend and personal doctor, Dr Amira, who lives in the North, to translate what the song was about to me.

It was a 'song of heart' aka love song. I remembered her smiling as she interpreted the song.

Truly, music unites, and connects without boarders. Long story short, I began to listen to his songs, because there was something about his production - local, the choice and blend of beats, traditional but infused with a touch of modernity, and yes, his passion as he sings.

Hamisu Breaker Songs

Hamisu has produced lots of songs but would love to introduce you to his records with just these three songs - Jaruma, So Ne, and Banganjiba. Enjoy

Hamisu Breaker Songs
Hamisu Breaker

1. Jaruma

In the year 2020, Jaruma became the most-watched Hausa song on YouTube. This Hamisu Breaker's song also set a record at the peak in the history of Hausa music.

2. So Ne

You will definitely love 'So Ne', because, as real recognizes real, hearts relate well to matters of the heart.

3. Bangajiba

Bangajiba, meaning 'Not Tired', is one of Hamisu's song you won't get tired of listening to. It came bearing the full hausa vibe that you're familiar with, but with a new rave. This is my favorite Hamisu breaker's song.

It is every musician’s dream for their music to be well-received by listeners and by so doing, help establish a connection between them whereby the listener becomes a fan of the artiste, giving them their full support whenever it is required be it for new releases, concert shows, brand endorsements or a clash with another musician. Notjustok’s Fan Affairs is a fun series that examines the relationship of Nigerian musicians and their fans while spotlighting the craziest fan moments of our favourite stars.

In this edition of Fan Affairs, we speak to the Away star with the enchanting falsetto, Oxlade who recently put out his second project, the Eclipse EP, to get the scoop on all the fan love he's been getting since his voice broke him through.

Fan Affairs with Oxlade

Fan Affairs with Oxlade: When did it first hit you that you had fans?

This was a weird experience but one time, the Nigerian police carried me under the bridge of Ojuelegba like they literally stopped me, took me out of my ride, and carried me into their van. I've never shared this story before cause it would make me seem insensitive but inside the bus they took me to, the police that was driving was jamming to Away and they didn't know that I was the one they were harassing. And I had mixed feelings like ‘Damn, I've blown’ but again, they didn't know who they were rough handling. But outside the streets, as they were taking me in, everybody was shouting ‘Oxlade, Oxlade, Oxlade!’ It was past the center of my hood itself, Ojuelegba in Surulere. It was a bittersweet feeling but I couldn't pay attention to the fact that the police were actually jamming to my song on the radio. It was weird.

Did they ever get to find out and how did you get out of that situation?

I never got to tell them who I was but I think it trended on Twitter at that point in time. Shout-out to Dotun Cool FM, he made some awareness and all the police ambassadors too, so the thing broke out on Twitter and they had to let me go in 5 minutes, they had to call someone like “Be like this one na fish wey we no fit swallow" and they had to let me go. And till now, they never knew that I was the one jamming.

ALSO READ: Fan Affairs with Lojay: 'I want to Go on A Tour Round Nigeria"

Back then I'd never performed Away, Covid was just starting to ease out and everybody was just starting to go out. So getting to see everybody recognise me, not from the perspective that I could have done something bad but instead, regardless of the fact that the police were rough handing me, they were happy to see me outside and they recognised me and getting into the car, it's still my song they're using to enjoy while beating me.

Was this arrest during the #EndSARs period?

It was before the #EndSARs, this was one of the various events that triggered us to stand up and go for the #EndSARs.

Fan Affairs with Oxlade:

What are some things you no longer do or some places you no longer frequent after this happened?

I missed street fried yam with ponmo, in Surulere I could casually trek outside and go and buy fried yam. Everything here is classy and packaged. I can't even go out. There are some things I can't wear-- some rumo rumo outfits that I can't just get away with because I'm an artiste. There are some places where I have to get into character. But trying to switch from Oxlade to Olaitan can be stressful. I wish I could still play football in the streets. I miss street soccer-- I'm a street boy so pardon me.

But I still go to the streets. I shot Frenemies in Shitta and I go back home to connect with my people, at least one weekend in a month if I'm in the country.

Would you say you ever feel overwhelmed by being an artiste and the fan love?

Now I just allow everything that happens to flow naturally so when they come gassing me up, I just show equal appreciation to the ones that I can thank. But there are some people that go beyond the line and do some extra things, those are the ones that give me goosebumps. So I always wear shades because I'm a shy guy by default and that hides my facial expression. Most times people go over the line on these Ps, I get goosebumps.

So of all these times, what's the craziest or most memorable thing a fan has ever done to get your attention?

A fan inked my name on her waist. It happened last year during Covid.

How did you find out?

She sent it to my fan page so they sent it to me and I was like ‘Wow that's crazy.’

Till now I don't know how to feel about it but that goes to show how diehard it is to receive that much pain. And it's on the waistline so it's not everyone that'll see it so it feels less pressuring on my side. But her boyfriend is also always going to see it and that's the weird part.

I sent her a message, all those newsletter things saying thank you for supporting my music and then I gifted her a free ticket to one of my shows.

If you were going to have a fan moment, what celebrity do you think would leave you starstruck?

Wande Coal, any day of my life. Or Chris Brown but he won't really leave me starstruck but I'll feel it. But for Wande, I'll not blink for the first one minute. And we've met but it can never go.

Fan Affairs with Oxlade:

You've always had a core following, what would you attribute this to?

I really have no idea but I think my genuineness and my transparency in my circle actually helped a lot. I try my best to interact with my fans. And all these little things matter. So once in a while, try to check your tweets and your DMs. They would understand that you can't reply everyone but when they see these little kind gestures, you know how they send these long-ass messages without expecting a reply and just go in and tell them you're a star, you can do it, don't give up. If that's the one thing you can ever send to them, you have no idea how many lives you're touching and it will have an effect on the person's friends too.

So if I feel like celebrities should try once in a while to retweet something or just show appreciation cause these are the people enriching us. So we need to actually care more about fans and I think that's why my own people they don't want to hear any story, if you come at me on Twitter, they'll come for you and your family.

You've also always had closet performances when did you start having these shows and of all of them, which would you say is your favourite?

That'll be Plug the Ox in 2019 December. That's the only time where I could connect with my fans at the fullest capacity before Covid so it was quite spiritual and personal and it was like “Damn I actually have fans that came only for Oxlade’s music. Now I can't wait to do that again cause this other time it's going to be bigger. Now I'm not even capping myself again cause the last time, I felt like ‘Lemme just have 200 people and do a meet and greet. Plug the Ox had 15, 000 entries and 2,000 people in a 200 capacity space which was a madness so ever since then, I don't undermine myself and how many people I can perform for.

In this edition of Fan Affairs, we speak to the LV & ATTN star , Lojay who recently had his first headline show to hear all about his experiences interacting with fans since his multiple-hits bearing debut.
Fan Affairs Lojay

Fan Affairs with Lojay: When did it first hit you that you had fans?

At the show-- LV  & ATTN Live. I literally just stepped out and I'd felt like people were listening to the music but I didn't think that I had ‘fans’ until the show. It was a very fulfilling experience cause all the work you put in in the last couple of years had finally come together and it was nice to see.

What are some things you no longer do or some places you no longer frequent after this happened?

I'm a homebody so I'm not the type of person to just go out for any reason normally. So there's nowhere really. Usually, whenever I go out, it's at night to lounges, clubs and I still do that pretty easily. I guess the only thing that has changed is how I go to those places cause now I go with people but it's still the same other than random places like Ebeano.

Now I can no longer go to Olaiya as often and I enjoyed going there myself cause I could make my own selection of meat but now I have to put it in the hands of someone else to get the right assortment of meat on your plate.

Fan Affairs with Lojay: What is the craziest or most memorable thing a fan has ever done to get your attention?

Someone sent me nudes. Like that was the first message. And I was like ‘what?’ I closed the chat after that cause the world is very sensitive. You don't want to be caught in any unfortunate situation so I ran away.

Funny enough it was early days so I know there's still going to be a lot more cause the brand is obviously going to grow.

If you were going to have a fan moment, what celebrity do you think would leave you starstruck?

Probably Elon Musk. I feel I'm more starstruck by people outside my field cause there are a lot of amazing people doing other things. Its not about his wealth, I'm fascinated by his mind and the way he processes information.

Given the fact that you came into the limelight following the release of your EP with Sarz in June, do you ever get overwhelmed by the amount of fan love you get?

Nah not really. And I feel like that's one of the reasons why Sarz and I have a great work relationship. I've subconsciously prepared myself for where I am for the past ten years cause I always believed that one day I'm going to have a lot of responsibility and power and I'll need to be able to control it. So it just kept me levelheaded and in my younger days, I just always knew certain things were just in the moment and to not get carried away.

You've also had a number of performances and they've all been electrifying. Where would you love to perform next?

So what I pray and want, is different from what is going to happen in the immediate future-- I'm trying to go to the Madison Square Garden, what's my hope and dream but if we're talking about a location that is achievable right now and is strategically the better location, then I want to go on a tour round Nigeria, LV & ATTN live everywhere.

Not just because I want to perform in these cities but because I also want to see life there and just travel to Kano, Enugu, Yobe, Delta and experience them. Even if we can't do 36 states, and have just like 20.

In this edition of Fan Affairs, we speak to the In My Maserati star, Olakira, who recently put out a new single, 4Play, to hear what fan love has been about for him ever since his smash hit.

Fan Affairs with Olakira

Fan Affairs with Olakira: When did it first hit you that you had fans?

There was one day I decided to wear a facemask and dark sunshades and drive out to the mall thinking no one would recognise me. Then this guy was looking at me. I kept wondering about it but I was certain he didn't know who I was. Next thing he went “Up in my Maserati.”

I was still moving far from him, he just said “Baba, no run for me now, we sabi you, wetin we wan do?” He now started telling the people in the mall and the cashiers that it was Olakira. People were surprised and like a joke, they started coming over and told me to take off my facemask because they wanted to snap with me.

ALSO READ: Fan Affairs with Laycon: "The Craziest Thing a Fan Did Was During Valentine's Period"

I felt so happy, the fact that I was covered up and people still recognised me, that's amazing. The crazy thing is that I've been to that mall before on a normal day with my crew and the cashiers attended to me normally. Then when they got to find out who I was, they were all over me.

What are some things you no longer do or some places you no longer frequent after this happened?

I don't go to public places or clubs anymore. Just imagine that a club is making inquiries about me coming to their club and getting paid then someone is telling me, “Guy, it's Friday, let's go to the club.” The same club? You're kidding me men. It has to be official, that's the lifestyle.

I also can't just buy things by the roadside anymore. I actually experienced something like that and I won't want to do that again cause at the end of the day, it's going to cost you a lot.

Fan Affairs with Olakira: What is the craziest or most memorable thing a fan has ever done to get your attention?

This one was funny and unexpected. It was in a club in Nairobi, Kenya and this lady just lied to the bouncers that she wanted to take a picture and they were pushing her so I told them to let her in. After she took a picture with me, she just whispered into my ears saying, “Can I have your number?” And the funny thing is that she was with her lover or husband. I was mind blown at the lengths she went to get my number.

To be honest, that's why you have to take it easy on some artistes. Because what if I'd given her my number and told her to sit down? Along the line I got to realise that her lover was a senator or politician and he came with a lot of escorts, that's how they'd beat me up in another man's land.

So when someone told me who her lover was, I was just smiling, mindblown by the experience.

If you were going to have a fan moment, what celebrity do you think would leave you starstruck?

Ariana Grande, no cap. When I heard she got married, my head dey spin. I've been a fan of everything about her.

In terms of artiste fanbase, there's Burna Boy's Outsiders, Wizkid FC etc. Whose fanbase would you say love to have in terms of loyalty?

Burna Boy actually. Who no like better thing? And his fans are real people. And Wizkid FC too. They're all trying honestly, doing what they feel is best.

What would you say are the pros of having fans and the cons if any?

Well, you're being celebrated by a fellow human and it makes me feel special and wonder if I'm not human as well. Some will even say it to your face that ‘You know, you're not like us.’

Well for the bad side, I don't think there's any. Just that some of them want to you know now *voice trails off*

Notjustok’s Fan Affairs is a fun series that examines the relationship of Nigerian musicians and their fans while spotlighting the craziest fan moments of our favourite stars.

In this edition of Fan Affairs, we speak to the Pan African rockstar fondly referred to as Cash Mummy, Lady Donli, who recently released her Wild EP, to get the tea on what fan love has been like for her.

Fan Affairs with Lady Donli

Fan Affairs with Lady Donli: When did it first hit you that you had fans?

It was in 2014 or ‘15 when I dropped my first single, Mr Creeper. I remember getting my first 1,000 plays and seeing people so into me and into the music. I think that's when I thought I had fans. I didn't use to call them fans though, but supporters. So it hit me then that I had supporters cause I had people I didn't know or have any mutuals with following me, sharing the music, and sending me messages about how much they loved it.

ALSO READ: Fan Affairs with Tomi Thomas: "I kissed My Fan Back"

I was really pumped, I couldn't believe it but at the same time I could. I was just happy that people could see the vision and share in it.

What are some things you no longer do or some places you no longer frequent after this happened?

The thing is, I'm an introvert so on a regular basis, I don't go out as much. So I think now I just go out less than I used to and I only go to certain types of places where I know that the people I'll see are my mutuals. It's not like I don't like meeting my fans but sometimes it could get overwhelming especially since I'm an introverted person.

Also most times when I go for a concert, depending on the type, I wouldn't stay inside the crowd, I'll probably move to the side.

Fan Affairs with Lady Donli: What is the craziest or most memorable thing a fan has ever done to get your attention?

I don't know if they did this to get my attention but someone has bought all my merchandise for 6 people and he posted a video and I saw it. It was in 2019 (and in the video) he just kept bringing out bags of merchandise and I was like “wow, that's crazy yo, this guy spent all this money cause he likes Lady Donli.”

Then someone sent money to my PayPal last week and was just like “Keep doing what you're doing.”

Mostly all this stuff started in 2019 after I dropped my album, Enjoy Your Life

If you were going to have a fan moment, what celebrity do you think would leave you starstruck?

Beyonce for sure. If I saw her, I wouldn't have any words and I might even faint.

You're known for your rockstar performances and closet live shows, which of these has been your favourite so far?

My favourite show so far has been my 2019 Enjoy Your Life, Lagos concert just because it had all the elements I wanted out of a life performance. I played with a complete band and The Cavemen and the energy that night was electric, you needed to have been there. It's one of those concerts that I think people will talk about for ages and just be like “Yeah, Lady Donli Enjoy Your Life, Lagos 2019” and tell their kids about it and show them pictures. That's what that show was for me.

You have core fanbases in Lagos and Abuja, but if you were to connect with one other fanbase in another city, which would it be and why?

I think it would be Port Harcourt just because when I was little, I used to sort of frequent Port Harcourt and the city holds a special place in my heart. I think if I could relate to my Ph fans, that'd be really cool.

Fan Affairs with PsychoYP: When did it first hit you that you had fans?

The first time I performed after dropping my first EP Lost In The Sauce.

This was back in 2017 and then we really only shared music to our friends in school from our phones and SoundCloud. I was booked for a prom in Abuja and once I stepped on the stage, all the kids ran from the back of the hall and the whole thing was just crazy. They were singing Hit My Plug, music I dropped on SoundCloud word for word and it was a great feeling. That’s when I knew I was made for this.

What are some things you no longer do or some places you no longer frequent after this happened?

I can’t just stop going to places or doing things just because I have fans. Like you can catch me in my car in traffic or your favourite fast food joint buying chicken pie. I still play football where everyone plays football. So it’s nothing like that for me.

Fan Affairs with PsychoYP: What is the craziest or most memorable thing a fan has ever done to get your attention?

A school bus of secondary school kids were singing all my music back to me.

I had dropped my first mixtape YPSZN and performing shows to promote it in the summer of 2018. After a performance, I was waiting for a taxi and this school bus drives in and all the kids see me outside the hall and just start going crazy. They started singing my songs to me, trying to jump out the windows of the bus. I sang back, took selfies with their phones, and just had a good time with them.

Has to be Drake or Lil Wayne.

Your movement started from Abuja and spread all through the country and is also going global. What's one place you were surprised to find out you have fans in?

Honestly, I don’t even know. I have fans everywhere. The other day I was in McDonald’s with my face mask and someone still recognized me!

Fan Affairs with Ajebo Hustlers

Fan Affairs with Ajebo Hustlers: When did it first hit you that you had fans?

It was when we did our first performance, the venue was packed and we had everyone singing our song word for word.

It felt really great and it made us realize we were doing something great and this much people could pay to come to see we were on the right track.

What are some things you no longer do or some places you no longer frequent after this happened?

A lot you know, just certain chill-out spots we used to hang at before, and even down to the little things like going down to the barbershop, now the barber comes to meet us.

Fan Affairs with Ajebo Hustlers: What is the craziest or most memorable thing a fan has ever done to get your attention?

A fan who randomly bumped into us at our hotel traced us to our room, we were recording so she asked for pictures and afterward refused to leave. She insisted on spending some time with us.

This was around early this year 2021, just before we released Pronto.

It signifies positivity and preaches hard work and perseverance, being able to navigate your goals regardless of the challenges life throws at you.

In this edition of Fan Affairs, we speak to Nigeria's well-loved 2020 breakout act from the street hop scene, Bella Shmurda, also known as the Dangbana Orisa, who also recently put out his High Tension 2.0 EP, to get the gist on all the love he receives from members of his nation, Dangbana Republik.
Fan Affairs with Bella Shmurda

Fan Affairs with Bella Shmurda: When did it first hit you that you had fans, president of Dangbana Republik and all that?

I had this song, Dangbana Orisa, when I released it, the love was massive. Everybody was loving it, that's when I knew I really had people behind me.

I felt blessed and graced cause not everyone has that opportunity. For me to be here, doing mad things and people loving it, I feel blessed.

What are some things you no longer do or some places you no longer frequent after this happened?

First of all, my school, I don't really go to my school anymore. Then there are some places I used to go back then in my hood where I used to go and enjoy myself, I can't go there anymore.

Fan Affairs with Bella Shmurda: What is the craziest or most memorable thing a fan has ever done to get your attention?

A fan had to come and knock on my door.

On your house door?

ALSO READ: Fan Affairs with SDC: "SDC Fans Are Not Crazy, They're Not Mad"

Yes, my house door gan gan gan gan, that they want to take pictures, men it was crazy. I don't know how they escaped all the security at my estate that they had to come and knock at my door, it was crazy. But I had to do it for them, I had to take pictures and all of that so shout out to all of them.

Tell us more details, what time in your career did it happen and was it more than one person?

They were 5 people actually-- 2 guys, 3 girls. But I could handle it, it's just to share love, try to be friendly enough. My guys were around so we could take their pictures and enjoy ourselves. I think this was after Cash App when Hallelu was hot. They were like ‘Yoo, we've been looking for you, we must take picture. They say na your house be dis, this-that.’

If you were going to have a fan moment, what celebrity do you think would leave you starstruck?

I think Olamide Baddoo, I've always cherished him, he's a king. So anytime I'm around him, I always feel like a fan. So him majorly, and myself.

When people come to you and tell you that they are Dangbana Republikans, do you have any methods of verifying their claims of being fans?

Well anybody can be a Republikan. I don't ask them anything, I just try to take pictures, make them smile and all.

Fan Affairs with Bella Shmurda: What’s one country other than Nigeria you have a lot of fans in and can’t wait to perform at?

I think I have a lot of them in Ghana, Kenya, in South Africa. Ukraine too, cause when I went to perform there, it was like a concert and it was crazy.

So if you could pick only one location-- your PR says you have in London as well, for your next out of country performance, which would it be?
