As expected, MI, Ycee, Vector, and LadiPoe delivered on the lyrics at the Hennessy Artistry Cyphers 2021, but it was the new kids on the block who caught the attention of viewers. Going by this year’s Cypher, it is safe to say we have a strong crop of rap stars in the making, ready to take Nigerian Hip-Hop to another level. 

The cyphers kicked off in style as Alpha Ojini, Psycho YP, Barrylane, and Legendary Styles took the stage and got us off to an exciting start in episode 1! Alpha Ojini got things underway and set the pace with his storytelling style. The Fresh Prince of Nigerian Rap, Psycho YP was up next. His punchy flow complimented his style, and he certainly did not disappoint, varying between Trap, Rap & Grime with ease. BarryLane was up next and with his KDot-inspired style, and he certainly set the bar high and took the cyphers to a whole new level with his content, flow, and delivery! Legendary Styles performed next, staying true to his Afro-Drill rap style infused with the right dose of humour ending episode 1 of the cyphers on a high!

Episode 2 included the finalists of the Hennessy Artistry VS Class; Season VII Winner Matosan, and Runner-up Escore Gatti, alongside 2019 winner of Hennessy Artistry VS Class, Laud Reyes, and her runner-up, Preacher Kingz. Escore Gatti maintained the momentum from episode 1, hitting us with punchlines galore. Another fan’s favourite, Preacher Kingz was up next and he was a vision of Nas reincarnated on this year’s cypher. His calm and collected flow were on full display. The only female artiste on this year’s cypher, Laudreyes graced the mic next. She came correct with her alpha female energy, accompanied by her flow and lyrical versatility. She certainly held her own amongst a male-dominated cypher and left us all wanting more. Wrapping up for episode 2 was the incredibly talented Matosan. As the reigning king, viewers expected a lot from Matosan, and yes, he came with the heat!

The finale episode was everything viewers hoped for. Led by LadiPoe, and followed by verses from MI, Vector, and rounded off by Ycee, this episode left us definitely wanting more and reminded us why these people are the superstars that they are.

I think we can all agree that this year’s cypher had it all! The content, the flow, the delivery, the style, and the range gave everything a Cypher should and this will undoubtedly set the bar higher for next year’s cypher. 

Hennessy continues to promote Nigeria urban culture, serving as an incubator for budding and gifted rappers through the Hennessy Artistry platform while serving as a springboard for their careers.

Psycho YP - Hennessy Artistry 2021 Cyphers

Nicholas Ihua-Maduenyi, popularly known as PsychoYP is a Nigerian Trap/Hip-Hop artiste who has garnered a large underground hip-hop fan base of new age music lovers in Nigeria. Born and raised in Abuja, his rap career started in 2016 with the release of his “Lost in The Sauce” EP. The multi-faceted artist has a diverse sound that cuts across the trap, rap, grime, R&B and hip-hop. Alpha Ojini - Hennessy 2021 Cyphers

Ebuka Alex Ojini-Ntamere who goes by the stage name Alpha Ojini, is a Nigerian musical artiste who wears the many hats of a rapper, producer. and sound engineer. He released his first studio project "No Silence", a self-produced 10-track project in 2010. This was followed in 2011 by another 10-track project "The Road to R.U.S.H", consisting only of covers of popular songs; he recorded this entire project in a 4-hour session, which is mind-blowing. In 2014. Alpha released his third body of work, a 6-track self-produced EP titled "My Own Horns: The JazzRap Project". In 2019, he released his highly anticipated rap album, “Chvmeleon”, which has gone on to have over 2 million streams on major music platforms across the world. He has worked with major acts such as MI, Blaqbonez, Hotyce, Oxlade, Ycee, and PsychoYP. His mentor in the industry is MI and he has close affiliations with rapper, Hotyce and singer, Oxlade. Alpha promises to be cold on this year’s Hennessy Artistry Cypher!

Legendary Styles

Legendary Styles - Hennessy Cyphers 2021

Onwusonye Samuel Ikokwu, also known as Legendary Styles, is a rapper & singer, born and raised in Imo state. He started music at a very tender age when he used various instruments which he heard on his SEGA game console to sing and rap. He had recorded several songs but didn’t release any till 2021, when he decided to make music a priority. His first released track gained huge success, and with that he was determined to take over the music scene introducing a new genre of music “Afro-Drill”. He demonstrates these talents and diversity in his lead single “Loose Guard (I see, I saw)”, complemented by his catchy dance to go with the song. Legendary Styles stays true to his style in every song by rapping in both English and Igbo. 

We certainly can’t wait to see how he brings Afro Drill to the Hennessy Artistry Cypher 2021!

Barrylane

Barry Lane - 2021 Cyphers

Ogunlana Oluwasegun Obaro, popularly known by stage name Barrylane, began his rap career at age 12. He grew up listening to Notorious BIG, DMX, and Snoop Dogg, who inspired his love for rap music, and he decided to explore this vibrant art form. He took part in street rap battles with his friends, where he subsequently grew his rap skills. Barrylane burst onto the scene after winning the 2018 Hennessy Artistry VS Class, and attributes most of his success to that. Now, he gets his inspiration from listening to Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Kanye West, and their different styles have helped him in discovering his. 

We already know that Barrylane brings the fire, and we can’t wait to see him on the 2021 Hennessy Artistry Cypher!

Hennessy Artistry, a platform renowned for its commitment to the promotion of urban culture and hip hop in Nigeria releases the cyphers for 2020. This comes after the ground-breaking docuseries - “The Conversation” which chronicled the evolution of hip-hop in Nigeria anchored by Nigerian hip hop icons, MI and Vector tha viper. 

Artists scheduled on the cyphers include Barrylane, CDQ,  Falz, Jesse Jagz, MI, Payper Corleone, Phlow, ShowDemCamp, Teeto Ceemos, Vader the wildcard, and Vector.
