In the memorandum which was issued online on Monday the 17th of May, Show Dem Camp who also double as the organizers of the Palmwine Music Festival stated that an event tagged “Palmwine Festival- Afrobeats in the Park” was being advertised to take place in the UK this summer, 2021. They then went ahead to state that they weren’t the organisers of the mentioned show and it was not an authentic version of their yearly festival and so Show Dem Camp as well as their associated acts would not be present.

Nigerian award-winning artiste, Wizkid sat down with 'Red Radio' on the 22nd of February 2021 for an exclusive interview on his 'Made in Lagos' project and some fun stuff about his life.

The interview was released on the 24th of February and after watching the interesting chat, here are some things we found out.

Wizkid Headies

Wizkid

 1. Vibe 'Made in Lagos' On Sunday

The first thing we got from the interview is that Wizkid created 'Made in Lagos' to give you a stressless song that can bring you peace of mind. According to Wizkid;

When I'm making an album, I feel ike I'm painting a mood for people to feel. And with Covid and everything going around in the world I just feel ike it is very important to have this kind of music out to the world especially at this time. Before COVID we were all jumping around in the clubs listening to ... you can listen to that but when it comes to when you want to chill; chill and thank God for family, for life, you're hanging out by the beach, at night, in he morning, everything different from club, there are certain types of music you play. So it was just very important for me to put out a body of work that actually make people feel something. Not just I want you to dance in the club, that's cool, but I want youth go back to it on Sunday see, I want youth go back and play my album on a Sunday, that's the kind f vibe I wanted to give and I'm very happy that people love the music.

2. Wizkid's Favourite Track off 'Made in Lagos'

Wizkid, Tems - Essence

Wizkid, Tems - Essence

The next thing we found out about Wizkid is his favourite track from his 'Made in Lagos' project and it is non-other than 'Blessed' ft.  Damian Marley and we understand why that will be because who else is rough around the edges from Ojuelegba Shitta and still blessed if not Wizkid? But stating the reason why that jam is his fave, Wizkid said; "I would say it's 'Blessed' with Damian Marley, that was a very spiritual session"

3. New Music with Young Artistes

Omah Lay and Tems

The third thing we learnt from Wizkid is the other young artistes he is taking new music with. We know, through videos shared on Instastory that Wizkid is recording music with young talents like Omah Lay and Tems, but apparently, he's also working with BadBoy Timz and Bella Shmurda. Speaking about it he said; "I've been working with everyone ... I've literally been getting it with everyone, I've been getting it with Badboy Timz, I wanna get it with Bella Shmurda, and just every young act doing amazing stuff."

4. Not a Football Fan

Our number four eye-opener on Wizkid is that he is not a football lover like a lot of other artistes and it makes sense because have you ever heard Wizkid talk about his club winning or losing in all of his emoji tweets? None we can think of but please be kind to remind us by tagging us to the tweet if you find it.

5. Owo Ni Koko

#AskWizkid

Finally, not sure you need anyone to tell you that Wizkid likes money, but if after listening to this interview you didn't sense that, let's just be the one to tell you. Machala does not sound like he'll play with his paper and that was observed from his response to questions such as "cash or card?", "money or fame?" but the truth is, who doesn't like the money?

Over the past 24 hours, the internet has been awash with jokes and jabs in a show of good-natured comparison between members of two generational demographics, the internet-weaned Gen Zs and the much older yet internet savvy Millennials in a battle tagged Gen Z vs Millennial. Reminiscent of the gap differences between SS2 and SS3 students, members of either side have refused to concede victory to the other but continue to enlist reasons why they’re the best generation. Well, we decided to add some music to the battle cries and take a look at where some of our fave artistes lie along the generational margin.

Don Jazzy

At 37, Don Jazzy is a don through and true as he has carved for himself an unshakeable image across both generations. And while he may feel like a bit of Generation X due to being born towards the end of that age, he is actually a Millennial.

Don Jazzy - Gen Z vs Millenial

Asa

A graceful embodiment of the ‘black don’t crack’ saying, Asa is one Millennial many might consider as goals with an airtight musical career and easy-going lifestyle.

Asa - Gen Z vs Millenial

Wizkid

At age 30 Wizkid is definitely no more a kid and has made his mark as a millennial and global Afropop star with a hit song that chronicles the struggles of the people of his town, Ojuelegba.

Gen Z vs Millenial

ALSO READ: 15 Nigerian Songs About Sex

Olamide

The Young Erikina has grown into an OG and at age 31, has influenced both his fellow millennials and Gen Zs coming after.

Olamide Baddoo

Burna Boy

The self-titled African Giant, he has not only gone ahead to put his money where his mouth is, but continues to gbese and gbe bodi globally in impressive ways most of his fellow Millennials dreamed they could.

Burna Boy odogwu

Yemi Alade

According to Yemi Alade, any woman once she recognises her self-worth, is Mama Africa yet it will not be disputed by any that the crown of the new-age Mama Africa sits pretty on the 31-year-old Millennial star’s head.

Yemi Alade Mama Africa

Davido

A superstar, a shooting star, a young stunner etcetera, yet nothing screams “I’m a Millenial” louder for the 28 year old star other than the name of his movement; 30BG.

Davido OBO

Omah Lay

Gen Z is rife with young stars but at 23, the sensational Afropop singer, Omah Lay may claim to be at the doorstep of both generations and possess some millennial qualities as well as that of the former.

Omah Lay Boy Alone Deluxe
Omah Lay

Rema

When Rema hit the scene he did it with a bang and has since gone ahead to drop “another banger” after every other banger. This has given him standing as the poster boy for the Gen Zs.

Rema

Tems

Young, fresh, with an eclectic and unique vibe, the leader of the Rebel Gang might decide not to take any sides in the Gen Z vs Millennial war as she is what some consider a Zilennial; a mix of Gen Z and the Millenials.

Tems

Teni

Her playful ever-vibrant persona may have you believing she’s not a day over 16, but at 28, Teni is a musical jagaban of the millennial type.

Teni Makanaki

Mayorkun

A true mayor, whether of Lagos or generational margins, Mayorkun is considered to be a gatekeeper and a blend between the Gen Z and the Millennials. That probably explains his skillfulness on the Gen Z -dominated app; TikTok.

Mayorkun

BOJ

The alte subculture cum genre has gone quite a way and BOJ serves as one of the young millennial pillars, who pioneered the movement on his now 27-year-old shoulders some 6 years back.

Bojonthemicrophone

Bella Shmurda

His debut project with fresh and compelling storytelling is dubbed Vision 2020, his latest single which addresses living the fast life, titled Rush, what more do you need to know that Bella Shmurda is the perfect blend of Gen Z and Millennial, otherwise tagged, Zillennial?

Bella Shmurda

Ayra Starr

Probably the most Gen Z artiste on the scene, Ayra Starr is bound to top charts and airwaves with an army of fresh young minds behind her 18-year-old back.

Ayra Starr

Badboy Timz

Breaking into the scene with readymade superstar persona, Bad Boy Timz at age 24, is a mix of the two generations and might choose to identify either as a Millennial or Gen Z and be gladly accepted by either.

Bad Boy Timz

Simi

Her social media username may be ‘Symply Simi’ but the 32-year-old songstress has topped several charts and served several hits to prove that she’s one Millennial who is far from simple.

Simi

Zlatan

Zlatan is one Millennial that has obviously learned from the street-hop OGs to birth a new wave of the genre while being loud and proud like a Gen Z. He could also pass for a Zillennial, which is a win for both sides.

Zlatan

Adekunle Gold

We’ve watched Adekunle Gold go from being the AG baby to AG daddy and have given the 34-year-old Millennial a thumbs up for schooling us on evolution in music.

Adekunle Gold

Joeboy

At the age of 23, Jeboy is charting serious waters as an African afropop Gen Z sensation and we all love to see and hear it.

Joeboy

We've taken a look at some of our favourite artistes from Asa to Joeboy, and we'll like to know where they lie in the Gen Z vs Millennial margin, so feel free to talk to us in the comments section.

The world of entertainment is a cyclical one and it’s not out of the ordinary to see celebrities collaborating with colleagues in other parts of the industry. The latest example of such is the visuals of Foreign, a fresh collaboration between singer and songwriter, Bankulli and British Nigerian rapper, Not3s, starring BB Naija star, Tolani Baj.

Tolani Baj Foreign

The video to Foreign which is directed by Visionary Pictures, dropped today the 22nd of January, and sees Tolani Baj playing the role of love interest, vixen, and chauffeur to Not3s who plays the role of a mechanic in Bankulli’s workshop. Down in the African branch of the world’s poverty capital, there exists a scheme which despite its fraudulent nature, is a quick path to wealth. Internet fraud, popularly known as 'Yahoo-Yahoo' in Nigeria, is the scheme. Originated in the earliest cybercafes as postal fraud in  the late 1990s when the national economy started to take a dip following oil price fluctuation,  has since grown into a huge racket like a highly pitched song in an opera.

12 Nigerian Songs that Reference 'Internet fraud' aka Yahoo Yahoo

Nigerian Artists

In the present day, internet fraud has become an activity that countless Nigerian youths engage in to eke a living for themselves, and to fund the extravagant lifestyle of their dreams. As a result, it has grown from being an illicit activity to being a highly glorified activity. This glorification is mainly done through music, especially songs belonging to the street hop genre. In these songs, musicians can be heard giving props to the activity which funded their 'lavida loca' living and business interests or praising their friends who have become an influential G-boy.

Here are 12 top songs that referenced the popular internet fraud lifestyle in Nigeria (aka Yahoo-yahoo):

1. Yahooze- Olu Maintain

What better way to kick off this enquiry other than with one of the oldest and most influential Nigerian musical references to Yahoo-Yahoo? Released in October 2007, it was a huge hit and one of the first songs to let us into the world of G-boys. In fact it’s all in the title and while some of us may have been oblivious to what Olu Maintain was singing about, we’d all happily done the two fingers in the air dance to lines of the song like ‘ti m ba hammer, one million dollar’ Other lines like ‘Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, boys dey hustle’ with the follow up being about living large on the weekends also serves to capture the hard and fast ways of the Yahoo-Yahoo lifestyle.

2. Maga Don Pay- Kelly Hansome

This is another Yahoo-Yahoo-backed number that became inducted into the hall of fame of Nigerian hits. In this song, Kelly Hansome depicts the joys of getting paid by his ‘client’ who he refers to as ‘maga.’ It also comes with explicit lyrics where Kelly Hansome dishes hacks of the trade saying ‘plenty format, offshore accounts and CC numbers.’

3. Legbegbe- Mr Real, Idowest & Obadice

In the later half of the year 2017, a dance wave swept through the whole country. It was the shaku-shaku dance with origin from the streets of Agege, Lagos state. The dance with its energetic routines birthed a good number of street anthems and one of them was Mr Real’s Legbegbe where with the help of Obadice and Idowest he urges the listener to do the shaku-shaku dance from the side. Legbegbe does not have any explicit links to the Yahoo-Yahoo lifestyle, but the refrain where the different models of iPhones are listed can be considered as speaking to the G-boy lifestyle of mainly using iPhones and often upgrading to the latest model is out.

'Aboki where my naira, me wan change am for the dollar' is also a recurrent activity, sang about in the two previously listed songs. From Olu Maintain saying ‘One million dollar, elo lo ma je ti m ba se si naira’ to Kelly Hansome’s 'plenty dollars, straight to aboki make we start to dey change it,' we are intimated on the easy come easy go, dollar-changing ways of G-boys.

4. Oshozondi- DJ Sidez, Slimcase and Masta T

Oshozondi is another song that was created during the legwork craze of 2017 and the beats bear similar pace with that of Legbegbe. However, this song sees Slimcase playing the role of praise singer as several names were called in a eulogising manner. The names which are a mix of wealth-suggesting adjectives and Yoruba words included personalities who are allegedly some of the most influential G-boys in the country.

Addressing the sleepless lifestyle said to be emulated by G-boys, Masta T then takes the more explicit route with lines like ‘Oya si Google, every night boys dey hustle, bi n ni client, ma pe mugu.'

5. Able God- Chinko Ekun ft. Lil Kesh and Zlatan

While Able God might appear like every man’s prayer to the Almighty to make them rich, it doubles as the Yahoo-Yahoo anthem and prayer for luck in the business.

The lyrical content of Able God makes use of a mix of regular Yoruba words and then slangs and sayings that have been popularised by G-boys. For instance, Lil Kesh ad libs at the intro saying ‘tan internet e YAGI ti fe login’ and then there’s that ever-present reference to changing money where he says ‘aboki ti se dollar!’  Then on Zlatan’s verse where he said 'Omo ase o lo n toro oja kiri, kuro n’be to ye k’o lo ra lappy,' he bells the cat by giving advise on the trade and calling for dedication on the job.

6. Apala New Skool- Qdot

Next on the Internet Fraud referenced Nigerian songs is 'Apala New Skool' by Q-dot where he assumed the role of social commentator, narrating and highlighting the get-rich-quick spirit of Nigerian youths which sees them trying all channels available from infamous Ponzi scheme, MMM to dog racing, local lottery; Baba Ijebu, sex work, and internet scamming aka 'Yahoo-Yahoo'.

He also traces this widespread urge for fast wealth down to its effects on the mindset of the youths who decide to engage in Yahoo-Yahoo and respond saying ‘walai talai mo fe sha ise’ when asked what they do for a living.

His song eventually became a prophesy when the next year, there emerged a video of a little boy enthusiastically saying he wants to become a G-Boy when he grows up.

7. Yahoo L’awon Ore Mi - Eleniyan

Sometime last year, this song hit the streets and instantly became an anthem as it acknowledged and gave props to two lines of work that have served several members of the underprivileged society; sex work and Yahoo-Yahoo

8. Living Things - 9ice

Released in 2016, this song didn’t peak till 2019 and when it did so, it was with a bang. 9ice sang this song from two points of view; that of a money-hungry youth who has no qualms turning to internet scam to get the paper. And then from that of a social commentator outlining the ills of such greed.

9. Loading - Olamide ft Badboy Timz

Loading was one of the biggest songs of 2020. The phrase, ‘spiritual ginger’ which Badboy Timz calls out at the beginning of the song serves to not only announce the monstrosity of the hit that the song is, but points at the level of motivation the song gives as Olamide literally urges everyone to work as hard as Yahoo boys; 'Olu gba yahooze o maintain, Iwo sun o un gor o un complain.' And also ball as hard as them; 'gara tan bi ti loader.'

10. Cashapp - Bella Shmurda, Lincoln & Zlatan

Another huge hit from 2020, with this song, Bella Shmurda, Lincoln and Zlatan had everybody chanting along to the scamming lingo and mantras of the trade with reckless abandon. So while the full meaning ‘CC’ remains a known mystery, we all know that it should be loaded, and the maga billed.

11. Am I A Yahoo Boy - Naira Marley & Zlatan

A very tongue in cheek song from Naira Marley, this song was borne off an accusation that he was involved in cybercrimes himself. The origin of this accusation had reared its head after a protracted online disagreement/ debate with singer Simi and rapper, Ruggedman on    the rightness of Yahoo-Yahoo which he’d made a case for.

Naira Marley was not only brazen enough to record this song at a time when his freedom was being contended on allegations of fraud but he also made mention of the fact that he had friends in the Yahoo Yahoo trade as well.

12. Maga No Need Pay - Banky W, Bez, Cobhams, MI, Modele, Modele, Omawumi, Rooftop MCs, Wordsmith

This song was made sometime in the year 2011 by several musicians in the industry who had felt the need to speak against the Yahoo-Yahoo trend while extolling the virtue of doing legal work. As a result, they'd joined their voices to make the song with a chorus that goes ‘Maga no need pay, for me to buy correct moto, for me to take make my doe’ among other lines that explicitly stand against it.

From the moment he stepped on the stage of the recently concluded BB Naija show, Laycon became the talk of the show.

Then, it had been his illuminated jacket that drove the conversation. But not much later, he’d won the hearts of many.

The turnaround on the viewers’ end had been swift and can be partly attributed to the discovery of his rapping skills

These skills were soon outed by Laycon himself as the reason why he’d ventured into reality tv.

Of Lay Lay

According to him, while speaking to Ebuka after emerging winner of the show; “I only came to Big Brother to promote my album, my EP.”

His plan paid off and right from day two of the reality show, viewers had taken his ‘Who is Laycon’ EP to the third spot on Apple music.

Eventually, these same viewers cum fans saw him to the grand prize with a landslide victory.

This support he has garnered since stepping into the reality tv world remains steadfast and he has become a trending topic on several occasions.

Today, the 6th of November is no different as Twitter users, fans, and foe alike of Laycon have engaged in a heated debate over his status as an artiste.

This discussion emerged when Naija PR, a PR page on the social media platform, Twitter asked music fans who to choose their next rated artiste. The question was supported with a graphic design that included pictures of 6 new-generation artistes namely Omah Lay, Bella Shmurda, Cheque, Zinoleesky, Badboy Timz, and Laycon's inclusive.

While a good number of Twitter users stand with Laycon, several others have reacted differently to his inclusion in the list. They are of the opinion that his career is still in the budding stages and his fans, known as 'Icons' are being motivated by their emotions.

Icons supporting Laycon

Laycon Next rated

Laycon recently collaborated with DJ Neptune and Joeboy to produce an Icons Remix to ‘Nobody.’ His EP also featured indigenous rap gurus like Reminisce and Chinko Ekun. He has also made mention of an upcoming album.

What do you think, does Laycon deserve to be regarded as one of the next rated artistes of 2020?
