Nigerian music sensation, Burna Boy faced disappointment at the 55th NAACP Image Awards 2024, as he failed to secure victory in any of his five nominated categories.

The awards ceremony, held virtually on Monday, March 11, 2024, marked the first night of the prestigious event.

Burna Boy emerged as the African Artist with the highest number of nominations, with recognition in five distinct categories. His nominations included Outstanding Male Artist, Outstanding International Song for City Boys, Outstanding Hip-Hop/Rap Song for Sittin’ On Top of The World, Outstanding Duo, Group, or Collaboration for Sittin’ On Top of The World featuring 21 Savage, and Outstanding Album for I Told Them.

However, despite his notable presence in multiple categories, Burna Boy was unable to secure a win in any of them, losing out to other artists.

The NAACP Image Awards are renowned for celebrating exceptional achievements and representation of people of color across various fields, including film, television, music, and literature.

While Burna Boy's defeat may come as a disappointment to his fans and supporters, the event also highlighted significant moments of triumph, pincluding Tems and Davido’s win.

Tems and Davido’s victories showcases the growing international influence of Afrobeats and the artistic prowess of Nigerian musicians.

The complete list of winners at the 55th NAACP Image Awards 2024 can be found here for further review.

In a press conference held on Tuesday, organizers revealed that this year's ceremony will span two days, from May 10 to 11, celebrating various facets of African entertainment including film production talents, culture, fashion, and music.

Nominees for the prestigious awards will be unveiled on Sunday, March 24, 2024, with the selection process carried out based on specific criteria and processes determined by the jury in collaboration with Delloite.

In their words, “The nominations of the AMVCA are determined by specific criteria and processes determined by the jury in conjunction with Delloite. Some of the key criteria taken into consideration for nominations include the eligibility period, categories, the submissions process and voting process.”

Busola Tejumola, the Head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice, welcomed attendees to the conference, describing the 10th AMVCA as a milestone celebration marking a decade of brilliance and innovation in African storytelling on screen. Tejumola emphasized the AMVCA's role as a benchmark for excellence in the African film industry, noting its significant impact on talent development across the continent.

“The AMVCA has established itself as the benchmark to excellence in the African film industry. This edition is not just the celebration of excellence in filmmaking, but also a heritage of an award that has improved careers and boosted talent development on the continent. For this edition, we received entries from films and talent across Africa. Shortlisting has begun and we will now move to the judging phases,” she said.

Femi Odugbemi, an acclaimed film director and producer, was announced as the head judge for the 10th AMVCA. He emphasized the award's dedication to excellence and the jury's commitment to ensuring that only the most outstanding works are recognized.

Changes to this year's edition include a reduction in award categories from 33 to 27, aligning with global trends and standards. Winners will be announced in 25 categories, including two special recognition awards.

“For this special edition, we are making changes to the award categories. The Best Actor and Best Actress categories will now be determined by the jury. We are also delighted to announce veteran film director, producer and writer, Femi Odugbemi, as the Head Judge for the 10th AMVCA,” she added.

Tejumola also highlighted the partnership with sponsors Amstel, Pepsi, Martell, and Promasidor, inviting audiences across Africa to join in the celebration. She announced that the final nominees in each category will be revealed live on all Africa Magic channels on March 24, 2024 at 8 pm, followed by the opening of the voting portal.

“In partnership with our sponsors, Amstel, Pepsi. Martell, and Promasidor, we call on Africa to join in this celebration, as we begin with the announcement of final nominees in each category, live across all Africa Magic channels, on March 24, at 8pm. The voting portal will open immediately after the announcement,” Tejumola stated.

In his own words, Odugbemi added, “This prestigious award is celebrated for its unwavering dedication to excellence, and the jury remains steadfast in ensuring only the most outstanding works earn a spot on the nomination list. Having served as the head judge in previous editions, I can unequivocally state that evaluating the remarkable submissions by talents across Africa is an extremely challenging task I assure everyone that the final selection will truly represent the best in the field.”

With anticipation building for the milestone 10th edition, the AMVCA remains a premier event in the African entertainment industry, recognizing and celebrating excellence in filmmaking and talent across the continent.

Afropop sensation, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has unveiled a personal detail that has intrigued many of his fans.

In an exclusive interview with Capital Xtra at the illustrious red-carpet event of the 2024 Brit Awards held in London, United Kingdom on Saturday, March 2, 2024, the Calm Down hitmaker disclosed the reason behind his distinctive eyewear.

During the interview, the host seized the opportunity to delve into Rema's personal life, urging him to share a secret he had never revealed before. Prompted by the inquiry, Rema hesitated briefly before candidly admitting, "I use glasses. I'm suffering from long-sightedness."

Long-sightedness, also known as hyperopia, is a common refractive error where distant objects can be seen more clearly than nearby ones. It often necessitates the use of corrective eyewear to aid vision.

Rema's revelation sheds light on the personal challenges he faces behind the glitz and glamour of the music industry. Despite his meteoric rise to fame, the Nigerian-born singer-songwriter remains candid about his health struggles.
