Talented singer, songwriter, and performer Ayodeji Balogun who is popularly known as Wizkid, achieved a historical moment at the American Music Awards (AMAs) 2022 as he became the first artist to win the Best Afrobeats Artist category at the event. The singer was nominated alongside top afrobeats acts such as Burna Boy, Tems, Fireboy DML and so on.

The singer also bagged the award for the best r&b song with the hit song 'Essence' that features Tems, picking the award over top acts such as Beyonce, SZA, Silk Sonic and so on. These award categories were confirmed at the award ceremony, which was held in the US on Sunday, November 20, 2022.
