He was murdered in Durban as he waited outside a restaurant with his friend, Tebello Motsoane by unknown gunmen who fled by foot. That night, he had been scheduled to perform at the Yugo nightclub in Durban as part of his birthday celebration.

AKA released 5 studio albums in his time, 2 extended plays, 30 singles and had over 20 features in top songs in South Africa. He was so impactful that following his death, Sony Music released a deluxe version of his album Mass Country which became gold in only 2 weeks.

In a remarkable launch of his musical career, AKA was nominated for Best Male Artist at the 18th South African Music Awards for his debut album Altar Ego which was released in 2011. In 2015, he won Best Male Southern Africa at the African Muzik Magazine Awards, he also won Best Collaboration for All Eyes On Me featuring Burna Boy, Da LES and JR at this event as well as at the MTV Africa Music Awards.

Still, in 2015, he won Best Male Artist at the 21st South African Music Awards. He won 5 awards at the 4th South African Hip Hop Awards where he won;

At the 2019 Kids' Choice Awards, he was awarded Favourite South African Star and at the Namibia Annual Music Awards in 2019, he was awarded Pan African Artist of the Year.

In 2020, at the 26th South African Music Awards Music, he won the Video of the Year for his single Jika where he featured YangaChief.

In 2023, the year he died, he won 5 awards out of 10 total nominations. They were;

In an official press release statement shared by the family of popular rapper AKA, who passed away tragically, confirmed the release date of his scheduled album 'Mass Country.' The press statement confirmed that the album would be released on the scheduled date set by AKA himself on Friday, the 24th of February, 2023.

AKA had first announced in a post on his social media platform on the 10th of January 2023, before his death, that he would be releasing an album titled 'Mass Country' on the 24th of February 2023, and his family, as well as his label outfit, have decided to proceed with the release as earlier scheduled, and this would be the rapper's posthumous album.

The family of multiple award-winning rapper AKA who passed away untimely at the age of 35, have announced the burial arrangements for the rapper amidst a police investigation into his death.

Father of the late rapper, Tony Forbes, in a press conference on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, addressed the public, thanking them for their support while highlighting the burial plans for the late rapper. He said:

“We want to acknowledge the outpouring of love that we have received since Kiernan’s passing. That love has been extended to our families, our colleagues and friends. It has really helped in terms of giving us comfort these past few days,” 

Tony Forbes also revealed that a memorial service would be held for the rapper who had been an inspiration to many on Friday, February 17, 2023.

The South African police, according to BBC News, has revealed that evidence gathered and uncovered so far has shed more light into the brutal killing and shooting of multiple award-winning rapper AKA who was killed outside a restaurant in Durban at the age of 35.

The police confirmed in a press conference that the rapper was assassinated when he was shot at a point blank rage by a shooter outside a restaurant in Durban. They however confirmed that the shooters had been identified even though no arrest had been made yet.

The BBC News stated:

No arrests have yet been made.

But police say they know the identities of the "two shooters", and are still checking the identities of all of those at the scene in Durban that night.

Investigators are now using the suspects' data to piece together their communication and movements in the run-up to the killings

Police Chief  Gen Mkhwanazi also added:

"We know that the aim was to first kill AKA, and the second suspect could have killed any other [person] because they fired a couple of shots - so anybody who was on the way could have been hit,"

The parents of the influential rapper released the statement in the early hours of today, Saturday, February 11, 2023, and asked for time and space from the general public to mourn the death of the rapper.

According to the guardian Nigeria, rapper AKA was killed in a drive-by shooting outside the Wish Resturant in Durban, South Africa. It was also reported that his bodyguard had been injured in the shooting that also killed a close associate of the rapper.

News of Riky Rick's death was announced yesterday, February 23, 2022, with multiple reports claiming that the fashionable rapper committed suicide after battling with depression for a long time.

Following the tragic incident, AKA took to his Instagram page to call for men's mental awareness. According to the rapper, men's mental health is not taken seriously. The rapper went on to state that all men are crying for help from society.

Speaking about the issue, he added a photo of himself, Riky Rick, and another person, which he captioned:

Let’s keep it 100. The last 5 people I know who took their own lives, 4 of them are men. I’ve seen so much suicide over the last year I can’t even feel anything anymore. I’ve spoken to a lot of people, some of them said “He just got a bag from African Bank blah blah etc … “ … that tells you everything you need to know about this fucked up, fake ass algorithm world we have created for ourselves to live in. Riky went to Hilton, he grew up around money. I hope that very soon we can address the issue of how damaged and broken the men in this country are. We have no one to talk to, we just pat each other on the back and say, “get on with it, be strong my boi” … but in reality, we are traumatised. Generational trauma passed down to us. Wizkid, a poster boy for the fast-moving Afrobeats genre, is known across the globe and is no doubt one of Africa’s biggest music exports. The Grammy award-winner has spent 10 solid years in the music industry, hitting milestones over milestones, walking towards sealing his name in Legendary status in the music scene.

Big Wiz clocked 31 years today and it is just right that we take a look at some of his performances over the years. Against this backdrop, this article looks at the top 10 Wizkid performances in hip-hop songs, specifically as a featured artiste. Note that 'hip-hop' in this sense can be afro-infused (Africa to the world, you know).

10. CDQ ft Wizkid - Nowo E Soke 

One of the afro-infused rap songs on the list, Wizkid gave life to the already groovy Masterkraft-produced beat. A sure banger when it comes to the clubs, Wizkid did a terrific performance on CDQ's 'Nowo e soke', no doubt.

 9. Phenom ft Wizkid - Murda Dem (Remix)

Jumping on a hip-hop song with one of the dopest Nigerian rappers at the time, Phenom, resulted in a monster tune titled Murda Dem. The Legendary Beatz-produced song to me is quite underrated. Big Wiz came through heavy on this tune, and that's on "Mary had a lamb!"

8. Young Jeezy ft Wizkid & Trey Song - Good Life

Released in 2017, a time when the Wizkid movement was gradually penetrating into the American market, Wizkid deservedly featured on a song owned by American veteran rapper Jeezy, and he came through with a soothing hook, so smooth that you would have thought he was an American artist. The song Good Life also had prolific American singing star Trey Song on it, but Wizkid wasn't drowned out. He stood his ground excellently.

 7.  Reminisce ft. Wizkid - Eleniyan

The lovely thing about the Wizkid brand is its ability to easily blend into the 'tush' and 'local' setting, a perfect musical chameleon that can be relied on for any type of song. Wiz again came through on the jam with one of Nigeria's foremost rappers, Reminisce. To show how sure Reminisce was that Wizkid was going to come through on the song, the rapper in his opening lyrics stated that there was no way he would get it wrong on the song, basically because he featured Wizkid.

 6. Olamide ft Wizkid, ID Cabasa - Totori

Olamide and Wizkid have proven over time that they have musical chemistry. Hence, when they announced their collaboration, especially with the fact that it was being produced by veteran producer ID Cabasa, a lot of people knew a banger was coming. A mid-tempo afro-fused rap song, Wizzy, for the umpteenth time came through with his hook-a friend indeed for rappers if you need a 'hit' track. Because looking at it, how would you say a cheesy line like "Onion booty makes a man ke (cry)" and not expect to get goated? How?!

5.  Tinie Tempah ft. Wizkid - Mamacita

Featured by British rapper Tinie Tempah (who is of Nigerian descent) on Mamacita it further proved that "Wizkid lon help awon rappers yi (Wizkid helps all these rappers). Star boy excellently delivered on the Caribbean-infused rap jam, and further sealed his presence on the jam with a dope verse.

 4. Jesse Jagz ft. Wizkid - Bad Girl

While this is open to debate, we all know one of the best rappers in Nigerian history, Emperor Jaga, popularly known as Jesse Jagz, is always very careful about his features. Hence, having Wizkid on a song only proves that it is a stated fact that he can murk any genre you put him on. The mid-tempo afro-ragga rap song 'Bad Girl' saw Wizkid give one of his best hooks as an artist and it was delivered perfectly.

3. Emtee ft Wizkid & AKA - Roll Up

A proper hip-hop tune from the trap family. The South African rapper Emtee featured Wizkid and fellow SA rapper AKA on this song titled Roll Up and Wizkid, again, didn't disappoint. Big Wiz rendered his verse on the trap song in an unbelievable way. He owned it and no doubt exposed the song to the Nigerian audience. One of my best Wizkid features, hands down!

2. Skepta ft. Wizkid- Energy

Teaming up with Nigerian-British Rapper, Skepta, Big Wiz delivered a sensational hook to Big Chief Skep's 'Energy', apparently, their energy must have attracted each other. Interestingly, the rap tune was produced by Nigerian sought-after producer Sarz, who also played a role in making the song a mega-hit. Blown both in the UK and Nigeria,  this is arguably one of the Wizkid-influenced rap songs that Nigerians actually know the rap lyrics, not to mention the brilliant hook from him.

 1. M.I Ft Wizkid - Fast Cars

Released far back in 2008, the young Wizkid announced himself with his performance on this song. Off M.I Abaga's breakthrough album Talk About It, the teenage Wizkid showed his talent on the tune, making sure there was no doubt in the hearts of anyone who cared to listen. The song undoubtedly gave Wizkid the required attention he needed in the industry. A Damn Classic!

Notable features that couldn't make the list include Krept & Konan ft. WizKid - G Love, Illbliss ft. Wizkid -Many Men and a host of others. A rare gem in the music industry, Wizkid indeed deserves all the roses given to him. Only one Wiz, only one Machala!

When we say Wizkid kills it best as a featured artist, it is not a fluke and we have the songs to prove it. From Beyonce to Drake, Skepta, Reminisce, Samklef, M.I. Abaga, Maleek Berry, the list is endless. Wizkid has always flexed his muscles and can be quite a bully to other artists on their own songs.

Beyonce - Brown Skin Girl

'Brown Skin Girl' is off Beyonce's 2019 album 'Lion King', which was released along with the remake of the classic movie with the same title. The song was an instant hit on arrival and the video won Wizkid his first Grammy Awards this year. Well worth the addition on our list for the best Wizkid featured songs.

Drake - One Dance

Off Canadian rapper, Drake's fourth studio album 'Views', Wizkid shines hardest on 'One Dance' even though he had the shortest verse on the song. 'One Dance' has gone ahead since 2016 to be certified platinum multiple times in eleven countries, including a 10x certification in Australia. Just this year, Wizkid's verse was resurrected via a TikTok challenge titled #OneDanceChallenge where dances tried a routine to his part of the song.

Skepta - Energy

The streets will not forget easily when UK grime artist, Skepta, and Wizkid had everyone in a chokehold with 'Energy'. Released in 2018, the song is certified Gold in the UK and spent 15 weeks on the UK Singles Chart. Wizkid sang, "Bad energy stay far away, make you stay far away" and you already felt yourself getting pumped.

Samklef - Molowo Noni

Taking you on a flashback on this list of Wizkid's best verses as a featured artist, who can forget this gem on 'Molowo Noni' by Samklef. From the intro, you already knew you were getting madness from how Big Wiz, Samklef, Ice Prince, and D'Prince all introduced themselves. Then Wizkid gets into his verse and says, "And now I got small money noni, I thank God for me noni" and it's all over

M.I Abaga - Fast Money Fast Cars

Who can forget Wizkid's real introduction to the scene? The real OG Wizkid fans got their first taste of the singer on rapper, M.I. Abaga's 'Fast Money Fast Cars' off his debut album, Talk About It. There's something about Wizkid's voice when he sang "If you don't talk money, omo don't show up, If you don't drive cars, omo don't show up" that will always grab your attention. It's no wonder that Banky W grabbed the first opportunity he could to sign up the superstar to EME Records for his first deal.

Reminisce - Eleniyan

When Reminisce called up Wizkid to feature on Eleniyan off his Alaga Ibile album, he probably knew NotjustOK would one day make a list of the singer's best-featured songs. Big Wiz tore through this song like butter on fresh agege bread. Reminisce lays off the baton for Wizkid when he said "Ti n ba lano gan Wizzy ma fi auto tune back". The 'Oh na na na na na" Wiz says after that is forever goated.

Maleek Berry - The Matter

"20 man shall fall that day if you cross my lane". That's all you need to know. Forever iconic.

DJ Maphorisa - Soweto Baby

We will not forget Wizkid's 2016 run in a long while, when he had the continental smash hit, Soweto Baby with South Africa's very own DJ Maphorisa and DJ Buckz. There was hardly anyone that heard Wizkid go "I say wait, you must become my lady" and didn't at least move in their seats. This was a truly addictive jam and it was mostly down to Big Wiz.

Emtee, AKA - Roll Up (ReUp)

Another South African collaboration from Wizkid's 2016 run makes our list of his best songs as a featured artist. When they tell you Wizkid can't do trap, just play the remix of Emtee's Roll Up featuring Big Wiz and AKA. Hearing Wizkid sing, "My love for money got me working on a Saturday, my love for money got grindin' on a Sunday" should do it.

Runtown - Lagos to Kampala

Of course, we cannot end this piece without the honorable mention of a man called Solo who said Wizkid will not "blow". What a lad. Wizkid shaded him heavily on the song Lagos to Kampala with Runtown, one very addictive and wavey tune, even when you listen to it now. Wizkid sang the iconic lines, "Even solo tell me say i no go blow", thereby making poor Solo public enemy number 1 for Wizkid FC. Sorry to that man.

The rapper who hasn't been having a great year took to his Instagram page yesterday, June 22 2021 to reveal that Father's day was difficult for him. He shared a picture of his late fiancée in the post, stating that it was the last picture of her he took. The post read:

Fathers Day was very difficult for me. Difficult because as much as I have lost you, as a father I cannot even imagine what it feels like to lose a child, especially someone as amazing as you. This is the last picture I took of you, and this is how I choose to remember you. I pray for your family every single day, as I do for mine. We miss you so much Anele. So so much. Everything reminds me of you. ? ?
