Organizers of the Afro Nation Festival released a statement on October 31, 2023, via social media expressing their disappointment over a unanimous decision to cancel the biggest Afrobeats festival. The cancellation has left music enthusiasts and fans around Nigeria disappointed. The reason behind this decision was "currently not possible to deliver a show that is of the quality that Nigeria deserves".

AfroNation is a renowned global festival celebrating the vibrant and dynamic Afrobeat music genre. The festival has been held in various countries such as Portugal, Ghana, Miami, and Detriot however this would have been its first showcase in Lagos, Nigeria. The Festival's Nigerian edition was a sort of homecoming for the festival to the birthplace of Afrobeats. The statement which was shared today, Tuesday, October 31, 2023, explained that due to the standards the festival itself prides itself in upholding in order to give fans an unforgettable experience have not been achieved in Lagos and as such the festival would not be held.

All roads would be leading to Lagos, Nigeria, for the maiden edition of the biggest Afrobeats festival in Nigeria, the Afro Nation festival, which is scheduled to take place on December 19 and 20, 2023, as the organisers have confirmed the first set of artists that would be headlining the event in Lagos.

It has been confirmed that the festival will be headlined by Burna Boy and J Hus, alongside Black Sherif, Seyi Vibez, and Flavour, with more names to be announced later on. Taking into consideration that the festival will last for two days, it is expected that another set of headline acts might be confirmed later on.

The Afro Nation festival has continued to grow exponentially following its first edition in Portugal in 2019, and Africans were super excited when the first edition in Africa was held in Ghana in 2022. The organisers of the event revealed:

After just 4 shows we have seen over 150 live performances in front of over 100,000 people across 3 different continents, Africa, Europe and America. Our commitment to Afrobeats exists beyond Afro Nation festival, in 2020 we launched the world's first official Afrobeats Chart with the Official Charts Company in the United Kingdom, followed by the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart earlier this year in the United States. The annual Afro Nation music festival announced it would be coming to Nigeria on June 9, 2023. Nigerians met this announcement with great excitement and aplomb. These music lovers also wanted to enjoy the same experience as their peers in Mexico, Ghana, Portugal, and Puerto Rico.

This weekend, the festival organisers announced the prices of the tickets as sales went live today. The event is slated for December 19 and 20, 2023, and the prices of the tickets are relatively high.

The first release of the VIP Weekend tickets is going for N228,000 per person. The second release, on the other hand, will cost N266,350 per person.

The payment plan ticket tier is a bit more pricey as it starts at  266,350 per person for its first release. The soon-release will cost 303,639.

The final week of June saw over 40,000 fans from all around the world gathered on the beach in Portimão, Portugal, for the biggest Afro Nation festival yet, celebrating the sights and sounds of Afrobeats and Amapiano.

Since Afro Nation’s legendary debut event in Portugal in 2019, which 20,000 people attended, the festival has more than doubled in size by its third edition this year. In this time, Afro Nation has also expanded across three continents, with Miami and Detroit debuts taking place in North America this year, whilst confirmation that Afro Nation is heading to Nigeria has just been announced. With the incredible rise of so many African artists and new popular African music genres exploding globally in recent years, Afro Nation is at the heart of it all and stands as the biggest event to experience the culture and all these artists performing together in a unifying festival celebration.

We highlighted seven unforgettable moments that happened during the three-day event in Portugal. They include;

Burna Boy stealing the hearts of fans on day one of Afro Nation 2023 Portugal

As he did in Miami in June 2023, Burna Boy once again showed why he is viewed as one of the best artists out of Africa as he took to the stage on day one of Afro Nation in Portugal on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, as he set the bar high at with his opening performance at Praia Da Rocha beach.

The starboy Wizkid had headlined day two of the Afro Nation festival in Miami, and the head of the Raver clan and the record breaker Rema also took centre stage, and Fireboy DML also represented the YBNL family on the stage. It was definitely a night to remember as these top acts performed nothing but the greatest hits from their vast catalogue of music.

Wizkid thrilled the audience with hits such as 'Bad To Me,' 'Pami,' 'Abracadabra' and many more, to mention a few, and fans were excited as Wiz created an atmosphere that would not be forgotten for a long time for fans who had attended the event.

Rema had performed his hit song 'Calm Down' alongside other songs from his debut album and solo projects, and Fireboy DML had the crowd singing along to his multi-platinum certified single 'Peru', and he also thrilled with other songs from his discography as well.

The Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Song chart is set to go live on the billboard website on March 29, 2022, and the chart would rank the top 50 popular afrobeats songs in the United States.

This is a big leap for Afrobeats as a whole. It is fast becoming a global sound, and the artists are also becoming a force to be reckoned with as major international collaborations have been recorded so far.

Following the global coronavirus pandemic, Afronation has officially released a statement, postponing the 2020 Portugal leg of their annual music festival to July 1st - 3rd 2021.

This statement was released on the 11th of May 2020 by the Afronation team through their official social media platforms alongside a piece of good news that in 2021, the lineup will be stronger than what 2020 would've been with the biggest afrobeats artistes.

It states;

First and foremost, we hope you, your family and friends are keeping safe and well during these unprecedented times caused by COVID-19. Afro Nation has been closely monitoring this situation and working in tandem with partners, local authorities and the Portuguese Government. The safety of our fans, artists, staff and the local community remain paramount.

In light of the recent Portuguese Government directive regarding large gatherings, Afro Nation Portugal will be postponed to July 1st – 3rd 2021 and all tickets will remain valid.

On a more positive note, we have been working hard behind the scenes for every eventuality. We have expanded our line-up, and can now confirm the biggest Afrobeats line-up of all time for Afro Nation Portugal 2021. As an independent festival we are committed to putting on the biggest and best Afrobeats events to take place anywhere in the world for you.
