The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) stands as the pinnacle, where the best players on the continent come together as they fight for one trophy. The competition has a lot of history and tradition with the players always ready to showcasing the sheer brilliance and resilience of Africa's footballing prowess.

Most teams find it difficult to defend the title after they won it in the previous edition. The exit of Senegal at the ongoing 2023 AFCON in the hands of the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire ensured that the Terenga Lions will not defend their title which they won two years ago in Cameroon.

We have decided to highlight the teams have been able to defend the competition since its inception in 1957.

Which teams have successfully defended their AFCON title?

(1) Egypt:

The Pharoahs are the most decorated team on the continent having won the AFCON seven times having defended on two separate occasions. The North Africa giants won the tournament in 1957 and 1959, they went on to win it three times in a row becoming the only nation to achieve such feat in Africa.

(2) Ghana:

The Black Stars also have their name engraved their names in the sand of time when it comes to AFCON, they won the tournament in 1965 and successfully defended it in 1967, both editions were hosted by Sudan and Tunisia respectively. The Black Stars have won the competition four times.

(3) Cameroon:

The home nation of Samuel Eto completes the three-man list of countries that have won the competition back-to-back. The Indomitable Lions dominated the continent during the early 2000's when they were a force to reckon with at any AFCON, they won the tournament in 2000 and went on to defend the competition in 2004. The Lions have also won the tournament four times just like Ghana.

Nigerian Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has stirred a debate by criticizing the dietary choices of the Super Eagles, the national football team.

In a recent statement, Kuti, known for his advocacy of African culture and traditions, revealed that due to his close association with the team, he had discovered that some players consume heavy foods like eba before matches, a practice he does not approve of.

While the Super Eagles have not officially responded to Kuti's remarks, his insights have brought attention to the intersection of food, culture, and sports in Nigeria.

This comes especially at a moment when the super eagles are preparing for their AFCON matches, they had come to a draw in a match with Equatorial Guinea.

As the team continues to prepare for upcoming matches, Kuti's critique has prompted a closer examination of the dietary habits of the players and their potential influence on on-field performance.

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has announced the host nation for the most lucrative competition in the continent of Africa.

The body confirmed that Morocco will host the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations after Cote d'Ivoire host the 2023 edition. However, it was confirmed that the 2027 edition will be hosted in East Africa by three nations ( Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania).

That will be the second time Morocco hosts Afcon after 1988, and the first time the Afcon is hosted in East Africa since 1976 (Ethiopia).

Morocco was initially scheduled to host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, but was later ruled out after the fear of Ebola outbreak.

Morocco participated in the AFCON much later than other North African states. However, once Morocco made their debut in 1972, they emerged and became one of the best teams in the tournament, becoming the second North African side to win the AFCON at 1976.

Football fans around the continent are of the opinion that Morocco will host one of the best in the history of the competition because of the facilities that the North African country is enriched with.

Vincent Aboubakar
Vincent Aboubakar

Notjustok has put together five records that the 30-year-old broke or equalled at the competition.

(1) Aboubakar is the first player to score more than five AFCON goals this century.

The Al-Nassir striker who scored eight goals at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations, saw him break the record which was held by Samuel Eto'o ( 2006&2008) Shaun Bartlett (2000) , Egypt's Gedofond (2010) and Nigeria's Odion Ighalo (2019). The quartet scored five goals at these competitions. Aboubakar becomes to first man to break this record since the year 2000. The current record is held by Congo Ndaye Mulumba, he scored 9 goals at

( 2) He Broke Patrick Mboma's Record:

Aboubakar scored eight goals at the end of the competition, surpassing the record held Mboma. The former Cameroon striker ( Mboma) was the fourth-highest goalscorer for the Indomitable with 33 goals to his name. Aboubakar's eight goals at the AFCON took his goal tally to 35 goals. Samuel Eto'o tops the list with 56 goals followed by Francois Omam-Biyik who scored 45 goals, Roger Mila is in the third position with 36 goals while Aboubakar is in the fourth position with 35 goals, Mboma complete the top five with 33 goals.

(3) He Beats Samuel Eto'o Record:

Aboubakar became the first Cameroonian at the Africa Cup of Nations to score in more than three consecutive games at the tournament. Eto'o held the record when he scored in three straight games at the 2008 edition of the competition. Aboubakar scored in all games of the competition aside from the semi-final game against Egypt at the 2021 edition.

(4) He Broke Roger Milla's Record:

Aboubakar became the first player to break Roger Milla's record of the number of goals scored by a Cameroonian. Milla scored 7 goals at the edition of the AFCON. Vincent has now broken the record by scoring eight goals.

(5) He Equals Cameroon's group strange Record:

Aboubakar joined the list of Cameroonians who have scored a goal in the three games at the group stage of the competition. Roger Milla scored in every group game at the 1986 edition. Others on the list are Alphonse Tchami in 1998 and Samuel Eto'o at the 2006 and 2008 edition.

The team's goalkeeper, Ali Ahmanda tested negative after a series of tests today ( Monday, January 24th, 2022). According to a spokesman from the Confederation of African Football ( CAF), any player that tests positive for the virus must be in isolation for five days before taking another PCR test 48 hours before the game. This means midfielder, Yacine Bourhane and Ahmanda will not be allowed into the stadium for the game against Cameroon.

The Comoros Football Federation on Saturday confirmed that Ahmanda was among several player that testes positive for the virus following the recent outbreak in the team's camp. CAF's rule before the tournament states that if team has eleven fit players, even if there is no recognised goalkeeper, the game must be played.

Comoros reached the competition's Round of 16, following an impressive victory in their last group game against the Black Stars of Ghana.

Nigeria vs Tunisia

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were handed a shocking defeat in their AFCON 2021 round of 16 match against Tunisia on Sunday, January 23, 2022. This was met with mixed reactions as ex-Super Eagles player Austin Okocha and the current coach, Austin Eguavoen, had a lot to say.

Mixed reactions trailed the loss of Nigeria to Tunisia in the AFCON round of 16 fixture, as players, ex-players, fans, and even the coach could not hide their disappointment. Nigeria had played against a Tunisian side that had been battling COVID cases and a poor run of form but still could not manage to get one past the defense.

Alex Iwobi was sent off in the 66th minute for a rash tackle on a Tunisian player. This saw an already struggling Nigerian side get reduced to 10- men.

Austin Okocha said in his pre-match analysis that Tunisia would be a tough opponent for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the AFCON round of 16 fixture and, as such, they should be alert and careful with their style of play.

Okocha said in the post-match analysis on Supersport,

They executed their tactics well. This is a disappointing loss. They outclassed Nigeria. I have always said that you are only as good as your next game. This is a lesson for every big team.

I think it is good to see that we are flying high, but the most important thing is the next game, and we can only justify our performances so far if we go on and win the next one.

So the next one is the toughest one for you and the one you have to win. I hope we will carry on the good job that we are doing so far.

In a post-match interview, the interim manager of the Super Eagles, Austin Eguavoen, spoke in a post-match interview about the match between Nigeria and Tunisia in the AFCON round of 16. He said

We tried to come back after the Tunisia goal, and we chased the game. But then we got a red card. It was clear that the officiating wasn't fair. I have toldd the players to pick up and ensure they qualify Nigeria for the world cup.

I won't criticise the referee beacuse they are the masters of the game, but Alex Iwobi's red card wasn't fair. The foul wasn't an intentional one.

The round of 16 draw has been completed after a series of shocking and dramatic turns of events in the group stages of the AFCON 2021 tournament. A few countries that advanced would be aiming for the quarterfinals for the first time in the competition.

Comoros Players ( AFCON 2021)
Comoros Players ( AFCON 2021)

The final 16 teams that would battle for the most coveted trophy in Africa, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021) in Cameroon, were decided on Thursday, January 29, 2022, after the final fixtures of the group stages were played and the victors were decided. With the quarterfinals of AFCON 2021 in sight, every country would aim to make a mark at every stage of the competition.

We got shocking results, unexpected exits, and resilient underdogs. The tournament kicked off with a shaky and rather boring start, but eventually gained and picked up momentum as the fixtures progressed after the game between Nigeria and Egypt.

The round of 16 would see several fixtures take place, all of which are:

AFCON Match by Match Analysis

At this point, history and record no longer matter because if they did, a few of the countries that progressed would have been knocked out of the competition. The AFCON 2021 has been thrown open with each country fighting to progress to the next stage.

Burkina Faso players celebrating

Gabon vs Burkina Faso

Gabon, without key players like Abumeyang, would take on a determined Burkina Faso side. Gabon has been off to a shaky start since the competition commenced and is still searching for a fluid rhythm. Burkina Faso, on the other hand, has had a strong start, finishing second in Group A behind the host country, and will be looking to capitalize on their current form.

This is not Burkina Faso's first knockout stage, as they hope to replicate their incredible run to the tournament finals in 2013.

Nigeria vs. Tunisia

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, who began the tournament with a commendable performance in the group stages where they won all the games to stay top of group D, would face a Tunisia side who, against all odds, pushed and progressed to the round of 16. Both Tuinsia and Nigeria will be looking to continue their amazing run by making this one of the key fixtures in this knockout stage of the competition.

Gambia players celebrating

Guinea vs. Gambia

In their very first Nations Cup outing, Gambia will be aiming to cause an upset. Gambia recorded a shocking stat in the competition as they remained unbeaten in the group stages. This is a whole new ball game for Guinea, who have not been in the best form in the competition. Gambia will be looking to make their chances count when Guinea fails to convert theirs.

Cameroon vs. Comoros

The host country, Cameroon, will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament as they take on a Comoros side who are playing at the AFCON 2021 for the very first time.

Cameroon has to be on the alert as the Comoros are known to bring the unexpected to their game. The Comoros team should be regarded as a key obstacle they must move to overcome if they want to keep their title hopes alive.

Senegal vs Cape Verde

READ MORE: #TeamCameroon Advance to the Round of 16

A low-performing Senegal will be looking to put out a better performance against Cape Verde in order to progress to the quarter finals. Cape Verde would be pushing to make a statement against a star-studded Senegalese side who have not impressed in the competition so far.

Morocco vs Malawi

Morocco would face difficult opposition in Malawi, who are currently riding high after holding Senegal to a draw to qualify for the round of 16. Morocco will be hoping to capitalize on the experience of their squad as well as their knowledge of the AFCON competition.

Ivory Coast vs Egypt

Arguably the biggest fixture in the round of 16 in the competition, Ivory Coast will be looking to key players like Haller and Pepe, as well as Aurier, to make a difference for them in the game against Mohammed Salah-led Egypt, who are currently growing into the competition with back-to-back wins in the group stages.

Mali vs. Equatorial Guinea

Mali would have to tread carefully into this game against Equatorial Guinea, who had stunned the current champions, Algeria, by beating them 4-1 in the group stages of the competition. Mali, however, finished top of their group and will be looking to capitalise on that in the round of 16 fixtures.

Personal Take

AFCON 2021 is finally taking shape. As we all know, it was off to a slow start, but the round of 16 fixtures looks promising, but we might get shocking qualifications in all. Nigeria vs. Tunisia would be one of the toughest matches of this round. The quality of Tunisia cannot be ignored, and the dramatic turn of events after losing their first game speaks volumes about the team. Even though the scoreline had not reflected this, the quality of the side had remained consistent.
