In a heartwarming display of generosity, some of Nigeria's top artists have made headlines with their mega donations to various individuals and organisations.

From music moguls to Grammy-winning artists, these philanthropic acts have left fans and critics alike in awe. While some give out small amounts within their means, others leave fans in awe of their massive contributions.

Here, we look at some Nigerian artists whose mega donations, running into millions, shook the internet.

Despite being called out by VDM in the past for giving money to crossdresser Bobrisky, Don Jazzy still found him deserving of the huge donation. His foundation, the David Adeleke Foundation, released a statement detailing the breakdown of the funds distributed to 427 orphanages, benefiting nearly 14,000 children. Despite some criticism from online trolls, Davido stood by his decision and provided evidence of the donation, silencing sceptics. However, this wasn't the first time Davido demonstrated such generosity; in 2022, he also donated N250 million to orphanages across 28 Nigerian states, further cementing his reputation as a philanthropic star.

4. Davido's Father's N1 billion church donation

Additionally, Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, a billionaire businessman, added to the family’s legacy of giving by donating N1 billion to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Surulere, Lagos. The donation, made in August 2024, was in honour of his late mother, Nnenna Esther Adeleke. This mega donation coming from someone who is not an artist shows the Adeleke family’s commitment to philanthropy and supporting their community, especially in Nigeria.

5. Wizkid donates N100 million to Surulere kids

Furthermore, Grammy-winning artist Wizkid made headlines with two significant philanthropic acts. In December 2023, he gifted N20 million to hypeman Money Gee (GOE) after a song was dedicated to him, reinforcing his image as a supportive figure in the industry.

Additionally, Wizkid pledged and fulfilled a N100 million donation to children in his hometown of Surulere, Lagos, in memory of his late mother, Morayo Balogun. This act of generosity highlighted his commitment to honouring his mother's legacy and giving back to the community that shaped him.

Given Africa's vastness and sheer size, it’s hardly a shock that the continent thrives in terms of its music. There are many different and popular music genres and styles that have emanated from the region, Africa. Some have been adopted or adapted by other cultures, while others have remained exclusive to the territory. Some music styles have been created within the borders of their original country and have remained within them, giving the population who live there a sense of national pride.

Of course, music is a global thing. It’s something that almost everyone worldwide will enjoy in some form. Even those who do not actively listen to music will find that they are exposed to it in some form. The radio might be on in the workplace; music may be used on TV and in film; it may even be used in games.

The influence and impact that music has had can’t be underestimated or understated. However, what is popular in one location can’t always be said to be the same in another. Africa is certainly no different in this regard.

Africa’s growing influence on music

Africa’s place within music has always been possible to see. As mentioned, there are forms of music that have been popularized worldwide that clearly have the continent’s influence. Hip-hop can be one of those that has been widely enjoyed by people in the US, with most artists in this genre coming from African heritage.

Afrobeats is one form of music that has started to experience its own growth. Hearing it in today’s charts with leading artists creating headlines is possible. Individuals including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Rema, and Mr Eazi (all Nigerian) are just some of the most famous artists within this category.

The genre is also used to create sound effects given its global appeal. It’s possible to find it being used within online videos on YouTube, or in commercials created for TV and radio. The rate at which the music genre is growing, it wouldn’t be a shock if we were to see it being used more widely in the near future.

What are the most popular music genres in Africa?

Given that 54 different countries form the continent, each ranging in size and with its own culture and traditions, it’s hardly shocking that there are many differences when it comes to the type of music enjoyed. As mentioned, there are certain musical genres that are exclusively found within the borders of one country that may not have spread like many of those that can be considered more common.

That said, it can be argued that there have been many different instances of music being infused with African culture. Genres like African hip hop and African heavy metal are some examples.

As a result of the different preferences that can be found, it can be hard to identify what the top 12 most popular genres are. However, a common belief suggests that the following is how it can be considered:

1. Rap

Rap has found a significant foothold in African music, drawing heavily on the genre’s origins in African American culture. African rap blends local languages and rhythms, creating a unique style that's resonated across the continent. Countries like South Africa and Nigeria boast some of the biggest rap scenes, with artists like Sarkodie (Ghana) and Nasty C (South Africa) rising to international fame.

2. Hip Hop

African hip hop, while similar to rap, often incorporates a variety of traditional and modern elements, making it distinctive. It has been influenced by global hip hop culture but also speaks directly to the experiences and struggles of African people. Artists like Cassper Nyovest and Khaligraph Jones are among those shaping this genre in Africa.

3. Afrobeats

Afrobeats, not to be confused with Afrobeat (created by Fela Kuti), is one of the continent's most successful musical exports. Originating from Nigeria and Ghana, Afrobeats is a fusion of West African sounds, jazz, funk, and electronic music. Artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Rema have brought Afrobeats to international recognition.

4. R&B

R&B in Africa has grown exponentially, fusing Western rhythm and blues with African melodies and themes. African R&B tends to incorporate more emotive storytelling, and it's often sung in local languages or in a mix of English and native tongues. Tanzanian artist Diamond Platnumz and Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage are among the genre's prominent figures.

5. Electronic/Dance

Electronic music is becoming increasingly popular in Africa, with genres like Afro-house and Gqom gaining traction, especially in South Africa. DJs and producers like Black Coffee have helped make Afro-house a global sensation. The upbeat, rhythmic nature of electronic dance music has made it a staple at festivals and clubs across the continent.

6. Amapiano

Amapiano, originating in South Africa, is one of the most exciting recent developments in African music. It’s a house music subgenre that blends jazzy piano melodies, deep house, and kwaito (another South African genre). Artists like Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa have propelled this genre to worldwide attention, particularly in dance clubs and on social media platforms like TikTok.

7. Mbalax

Mbalax is a Senegalese music style made famous by Youssou N’Dour. It blends traditional Senegalese rhythms like sabar drumming with modern pop and jazz influences. Mbalax is particularly popular in Senegal and Gambia but has spread to some parts of Europe as well.

8. Soukous

Soukous is a fast-paced, guitar-driven genre that originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The music is heavily based on traditional rumba rhythms but infused with modern dance beats. It's known for its infectious, upbeat tempo, making it a favorite in dance halls across Africa and beyond.

9. JuJu

JuJu music, native to Nigeria, is deeply rooted in the traditional Yoruba culture and is performed using percussion instruments like talking drums, as well as guitars. Originating in the early 20th century, it has evolved over time and remains one of the most prominent music styles in Nigeria, often performed during celebrations and ceremonies.

10. Highlife

Highlife is a genre that originated in Ghana and spread across West Africa. It’s a fusion of traditional Akan music, jazz, and brass band sounds. Highlife music, with its jazzy horns and upbeat rhythms, became particularly popular in Nigeria as well, thanks to artists like E.T. Mensah and Victor Olaiya.

11. Tarabu

Tarabu is a popular genre in East Africa, particularly along the Swahili coast in Tanzania and Kenya. It blends traditional Arabic and Swahili sounds with Indian and Persian influences. Its melodies are often emotive and incorporate themes of love and life struggles. The genre has been widely embraced in Zanzibar and coastal cities like Mombasa.

12. Bongo Flava

Bongo Flava, originating from Tanzania, is an East African spin on American hip hop and R&B, mixed with reggae, Afrobeats, and local Tanzanian rhythms. It has become immensely popular across East Africa, with artists like Diamond Platnumz and Ali Kiba leading the charge. The genre is known for its catchy beats and lyrics addressing social and political issues.

Some of these genres are more widely known than others. For instance, the first five of those on the list of ten can be heard globally. They have each entered the mainstream music industry, with big artists having had success in the charts with these genres.

However, the final seven are more specific to Africa. The Mbalax genre of music is a popular Senegalese music style but it’s largely confined to a handful of Western African countries and a very few in Europe. At the same time, Soukous - a fast-paced guitar-driven style of music originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has started to spread widely. It can be heard in a few countries around the continent, as well as within select locations across Europe where African culture can be found.

Will Africa’s music scene continue to grow and expand?

With the way that music is able to spread and be heard today, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we saw African music gain further traction.

Tools like social media, YouTube and other modern-day technologies are extremely powerful. They have made the world smaller from a digital POV, allowing for the elimination of virtual barriers. With these barriers gone, people can share what they hear or create more freely, and with more diverse audiences.

It may only take one individual to create a sound that goes viral for the genre to become popular. If this happens, it could help to propel the African music industry to new heights.

Beyond individual artistry, collaboration offers a unique opportunity to explore new sonic territories.
By working together, musicians can create innovative and authentic music because they are each giving a part of themselves.

Afrobeats is a collection of genres that include highlife, jùju music, and Yoruba beats. Recently, it has seen a skyrocket in growth and recognition. The growing appeal of this sound has made artist collaborations in the Afrobeats genre all the more important in terms of the genre's development and visibility. Basically, these duos have been instrumental in expanding the genre's horizons and making Afrobeats more known to a global audience.

Although there have been hit duets like Wizkid's One Dance, joint albums and even joint tours, there is nothing like a commitment between two artists to make music all the time as a duo. This is why, we look at the top 9 duos in the history of Afrobeats;

1. P-Square

These two are legends, that much is clear. They have been successful in the African and Nigerian music scenes for more than 20 years. They became successful in 200 with the release of Senorita. Then in 2005 gained more recognition after releasing their sophomore album Get Squared in 2005. Psquare had lots of hit songs before their breakup in 2017. The twin brothers Paul and Peter Okoye pursued solo careers following their breakup however their solo endeavours were not as prosperous as their group career.

2. The Cavemen

The Cavemen, who are brothers Benjamin James, a drummer, and Kingsley Okorie, a bassist, are renowned for their innovative approach to Highlife music. When their Headies-winning debut album Roots was released in 2020, many young Nigerians became admirers. Since then they released Love and Highlife in 2021. This hit album features Cobhams Asuquo, Made Kuti, Efuk Ubong, and PC Lapez.

The duo released No Love in Lagos in 2024 alongside another duo, Show Dem Camp.

3. SDC (Show Dem Camp)

For more than ten years, Wale Davies (Tec) and Olumide Ayeni (Ghost) have been a constant presence in Nigerian rap. With both of them being music executives, Tec revealed in a PAM interview that they had to change frequencies in order to appeal to the Nigerian audience. Since then, they have released hits like the Clone Wars and Palmwine Express series.

6. BOJ and Ajebutter22

7. R2Bees

R2Bees is a prominent Ghanaian hip hop and hiplife duo hailing from Tema, composed of cousins Faisal Hakeem, known as Omar Sterling, and Rashid Mugeez. They burst onto the music scene in 2007 and quickly gained recognition with their debut single Yawa Gal in 2008, followed by the hit I Dey Mad.

In this story, we pay homage to Nigerian music videos by highlighting 10 of the best-animated ones.

One thing about Nigerian music, even when it was generally not as good as it currently is, we always got served with good music videos that pieced together quality directing, choreography, styling and a resolution that was for the most part, at par with videos in that era. With the right factors coming together to get our music more attention first on the local scene before the international, this attention to visual details had become an additional booster that had piqued the interest of music stations to spin local videos and music enthusiasts to tune in. So in this story, we pay homage to Nigerian music videos but take a spin on it by highlighting the animated ones.

What are visualisers?

Apparently, visualizers are different from music videos in that while they're visuals that accompany a song, they're typically very simplistic with the aim of bringing the song to life in an easy-to-follow manner that is still interesting. Most times they're digital and are animated.

See the 10 Nigerian music videos that are animated;

1. Suuru Lere by Lagbaja

Lagbaja's Suuru Lere is an 8-minute-long track that recounts Nigeria's political history, right from the amalgamation to the moment we gained independence and the onslaught of ensuing coups. All of these events were rendered in animation to provide viewers young and old with a well-detailed and graphic depiction of the circumstances surrounding our democracy, which was the crux of the song; patience with each other despite our myriad differences in the face of the democratic mandate.

Today, Lagbaja's Suuru Lere is 22 years old as it was released in the year 2000 but it seems the message in his song and the visuals collectively flew right over the nation's head with the state of affairs mirroring that depicted in the video.

2. Ijoya by Weird MC

Weird MC's Ijoya was a huge hit in 2006 when it was released, and it launched the rapper into the limelight. Its fully animated video had further endeared the song to its viewers, as kids most especially were in love with its colorful graphics that saw Weird MC go from swaggering in front of a Hummer Jeep to dancing with an all-female troupe as well as talking drum players.

The video was also additionally brilliant in that the much-loved animation had distracted viewers from Weird MC’s utterly masculine-presenting style which may have rubbed the highly normative Nigerian society the wrong way if rendered in the typical life-like form.

3. For Instance by 2Baba

Its simple video which was in animated form saw 2Baba appear in many scenes from traffic to the club and in newspapers and this colourful depiction had been well-received, earning the video a formidable run on music video stations.

4. Action Film by M.I Abaga featuring Brymo

The late 2000s and early 2010s were owned by iconic rapper M.I Abaga and in 2010 he gave TV an unforgettable moment with the video of his Action Film. It had been animated, action and sleuth filled with M.I as the main character carrying out stunts from a car to a plane, dressed up in a sharp suit in a bid to rescue a kidnapped woman.

Towards the end, Ice Prince made a timely cameo, coming in to save M.I when the chips were down and these elements and its close depiction of the chaos in Lagos and a typical action movie served to make the video a favourite.

5. Surrender- Mr Eazi ft Simi

Mr Eazi has with his EmPawa initiative revolutionized the music business and one of the ways in which he did this was by popularising visualizers.

Mr Eazi’s Surrender is a perfect example of a visualizer as he was depicted dancing with reckless abandon beside a giant waist adorned with waist beads, swaying to the beats of the music. The animated Mr Eazi also threw in some hilarious dance moves that illustrated kicker lines like “I know say I no strong like Mike Tyson I know say I no get the voice like Michael Jackson.”

Surrender was a hit with the Poka Studios animated video, which amassed 11m views, which is double the number of views the official video got. Since then, Mr Eazi has made a killing with animated visualizers like the Chronixx-featured She Loves Me and visuals for recent singles like 'She Loves Me'.

6. Joeboy by Lonely

Embarking on a binge of Joeboy’s videos will reveal that the Afropop sensation is a fan of animated visualizers and this makes perfect sense given that the star is signed to Mr Eazi’s EmPawa Initiative.

Also created by Poka Studios, Joeboy has, with his visualisers, not only provided viewers with a colourful video but hilarious ones from Call to Lonely. The visualizer for Call was released at the height of the pandemic, proving to be the smart way out given the restriction on movement and gathering. It was well received and sits at 7.6 million views at the moment. While it's his most viewed animation video, the visualizer for Lonely takes the cake by virtue of its funniness.

In Lonely, Joeboy’s aloneness is juxtaposed against a bunny with a thriving love life who takes advantage of the singer's space and telephone to woo his bunny lover while Joeboy waits on his love interest.

Eventually, Joeboy’s wait is rewarded just as the bunny is jilted by his lover for a buff-looking bunny and Joeboy gets to kick the callous rabbit out. The visualizers to Call and Lonely also feature interesting cameos of Joeboy's label boss Mr Eazi who plays random roles from being the driver of the golf cart in Call to being the delivery man of the bunny's carrots in Lonely, serving to give them Marvel level twists.

7. Rora by Reekado Banks

The visualiser for Reekado Banks Rora had been released before the more popular official music video but this did not hinder the video, from getting substantial clicks.

In fact, to date, a total of 15 million people watched Reekado Banks sing, put the lyrics into action and dance with his animated love interest in the Poka Studios created visualiser for Rora

8. In My Maserati by Olakira

Olakira’s In My Maserati blew up with a dance move and a challenge in tow. These had been off the back of his visualiser, which had stitched together hilarious scenes where he drove his lover around first in a shopping cart and then a wheelbarrow before finally, they hopped in an actual Maserati.

Directed by the self-same Poka Studios behind Mr Eazi and Joeboy's visuals, the visualizer had contributed to giving Olakira his first hit song with In My Maserati

9. Greed by Jinmi Abduls featuring Oxlade

In the Oxlade featured song, Greed, Jinmi Abduls vocalizes about his act of infidelity where he cheated on his lover due to greed and is now begging her forgiveness.

So in the visualiser that Naiky Toonz produced, we get emotion-filled scenes of Jinmi tailing his lover all around town while apologising. And then a scene with Oxlade sees him confessing to a priest who hilariously joins him in apologising to his wronged lover, but to no avail.

10. Thunder Fire You by Ric Hassani

Right from the audio, Ric Hassani’s Thunder Fire You elicited laughter so it was only right that the video did justice to the song.

As a result, Ric Hassani made use of a visualiser, with a few scenes depicting his ill-treatment from his lover followed by literal and swift retribution through thunder strikes on her and her friend.

It gets even funnier when God and the angels weigh in from heaven to express their displeasure and eventually met out punishment on the lover even faster than Ric himself could.

Other animated Nigerian music videos include Olamide's Love No Go Die and Yung L's Wizkid featured Eve Bounce Remix. What other animated music videos do you know of? Add them in the comment section.

5. Adekunle Gold and Simi

Adekunle Gold and Simi, both prominent artists in the Afrobeats scene, surprised many fans when they got married on January 9, 2019. They kept their relationship private before tying the knot.

4. Banky W (Olubankole Wellington)

Banky W, who is now a Nigerian Senator, was once a successful singer and actor. He married the beautiful model Adesua Etomi on November 25, 2017, after a brief engagement.

3. Peter Okoye (Mr. P)

Peter Okoye, one half of the P-Square duo, now known as Mr. P, is married to Lola Omotayo-Okoye. The couple tied the knot on November 17, 2013, after dating for good 8 years.

2. Paul Okoye (Rudeboy)

Paul Okoye, who is also from the group P-Square, initially married Anita Okoye in a traditional ceremony on March 22, 2014. They have three children together, but they are currently going through a divorce.

With the divorce in progress, Paul traditionally wedded influencer and content creator, Ivy Ifeoma, in 2024. Strikingly, the new wife confirmed rumours of her being pregnant a few months later.

1. Olamide

Olamide, a prominent figure in the Afrobeats genre, has been in a long-term relationship with Adebukunmi Aisha Sulaimon, with whom he shares two children. The couple has been together for over 8 years.

Rumours suggest that they got married in 2020, but this is widely unconfirmed. Their children are Batifeori Maximiliano Adedeji, their firstborn, and Tunrepin Myles Adedeji, born in 2019, four years after the birth of their first child.

The Nigerian-based version of the Big Brother franchise, popularly known as BB Naija has been a huge success since its inception in 2006 with its first version known simply as BB Naija Season 1.

Then a test of how the show which had formerly been a continent-based one would be received, the prize money had been N100,000 which was a healthy sum back in the day. It has since spiralled into 6 successful shows that have given the Nigerian populace A-list celebrities, media personalities and a host of public figures doing awesome things in the entertainment industry we love to keep up with.

As a result, each subsequent edition not only gets bigger but becomes more instrumental in launching the housemates into their preferred career paths especially entertainment-bound ones. A perfect example was the previously rounded-off edition which saw a host of models and musicians go into Big Brother’s house and come out stars.

To earmark the star-making power of the franchise and its ability to act as a funnel of talent for the entertainment industry, here’s a list of all the BBNaija housemates who have put out a song, from season 1 to season now;

Whitemoney Rosemary song

BBNaija Housemates that Have Put Out A Song

In hindsight, it has become obvious that the very first season was a tester for the potential the show had in Nigerian waters as it had no seasonal tags and less of the pomp and fanfare that we have now come to associate with the show. The contestants as well seem to have settled into a life away from the cameras and there appears to be no traces of them wandering into the music-making space.

This season had served to establish the reality show as a star-making one with the winner Efe, an up-and-coming musician becoming an eight-digit millionaire which he, in turn, invested into his music. Here’s the gist of all the musicians the second season of BBNaija gave us;

Efe

BBNaija housemate songs

Full name Michael Efe Ejeba, the winner of the show had already established himself in Plateau state where he was born and bred as a rapper and entertainment and youth culture maven, and his win had simply made his efforts nationally known. Efe has since put out a slew of songs from Based On Logistics which had gained popularity as a slang, Babaloke with Oritsefemi, Warri with Olamide, and also has a discography stacked with three albums.

Marvis

BBNaija Housemates songs

A finalist, Marvis Nkpornwi had hit the show with a degree in Mass Communications and come out in the 5th position. Since then she’s put out Vibe and Omde, which touches on the horror of the Lekki Tollgate shooting.

Bisola

BBNaija Housemates songs

A triple threat and the runner-up of the show, she’d once emerged 5th place at a singing competition so embodying her talents as an actress, media personality and singer was not a disruptive process for the star who has once mentioned that music is her first love. In 2018, she made a noteworthy comeback to music with Boda Luku and Controlla and has had other singles since.

Debie Rise

BBNaija Housemates songs

Before she made her debut on TV as a reality show star, Debie Rise had already made a name for herself on Nigerian Idol as a dancer, singer, rapper, and guitarist and made a comeback almost two years after that as a guest performer so fans of the star were little surprised when she put out her album, R.A.G.E in 2018.

The reality show had not only come with a bigger grand prize but also more twists and drama that made the show live up to its theme name. This season of the BBNaija show also came with quite a number of musical artistes. Here’s a rundown of the artistes in the house;

Teddy A

BBNaija Housemates Songs

A full-time musician, Teddy A had come into the BBNaija house with one mission, to blow and push his music. Since his stay in the house, the ex-housemate who got married to his fellow housemate, Bam Bam has put out an album titled Alpha Vol.1 and recently put out a new single, Down, earlier this year.

K-Brule

BBNaija Housemates song

An only child, K-Brule had to drop out of music school to tend to his chronically ill mother but never gave up on his passion for making music and he has since made his name a known one following his appearance on BBNaija after which he put out a number of singles and featured on tracks from Facetime to Dollar with Paper & Prayer and the Andre Vibez-produced Special being solo entries from him in relatively recent times.

Bam Bam

BBNaija Housemates song

All Bam Bam wanted to do with the prize money was pay her tithes and invest in businesses if she had emerged winner. That never became reality but the trained actress made do with the former by finding her voice as a soft rock gospel singer releasing Rest and more recently, Worry

Rico Swavey

BBNaija Housemates song

An ex-BBNaija housemate who had been strongly committed to enjoying his experience on the show, Rico Swavey debuted into the music world with a single titled Emotions and in 2020, solidified his lover boy appeal with Only You

As sensational and fiery as the theme title suggests, this season remains a fan favourite due to the many highlights of the show. It had also come packed with a number of music impassioned contestants, eager to slug it out for the grand prize and a chance at fame to push their craft. Here’s a look at all the BBNaija Pepper Dem housemates who have made music and put it out to the public:

Ike

BBNaija Housemates song

Very much the devil-may-care Nigerian-American, Ike had given the show watchers their money’s worth and very recently requested that his fans show out similarly for him by streaming his new single, Foreign released under the moniker, Ike Exclusive featuring Deschcushiel

Sir Dee

BBNaija Housemates song

He may have gone into the house as a banker and graphics designer but the ex-BBNaija Pepper Dem housemate soon diversified into music with a feature on singer and rapper, Magnito’s EndSARS song alongside former housemate, Ike.

Avala

BBNaija Housemates song

It’s always an honour to pass through a system and later on, be recognised in your field by said system. This was Avala’s story during the finale show for the just concluded BBNaija where the graduate of music performed her single No More. She has since put out another, Looking for Avala as well as Jojo, and doesn’t seem to be letting up on applying the pressure soon.

Elozonoam

BBNaija Housemates song

A self-employed television producer whose output ranges from quirky comedy skits to short films, the ex-BBNaija housemate had also flipped his out-of-the-box sense of humour into music-making, putting out The Garri Song and Sweet Dodo in 2019.

Khafi

BBNaija Housemates song

This ex-BBNaija housemate soon became a former officer of the law in London after her stint in the BBNaija house but by then the bubbly Ekiti native had won over numerous viewers of the show and in 2020, during the heat of the EndSARS movement, had published a cover of Demi Lovato’s Commander in Chief, putting to the test her singing talents.

Ella

BBNaija Housemates Songs

A literal truckload of talents with singing, dancing, and acting skills on lock. She soon stunned the internet after BBNaija with a thrilling cover of Davido’s Blow My Mind which elicited a comment from the megastar himself. She has since put out other singles such as Oh Ella and Live Your Life

Omashola

BBNaija Housemates song

Recently, fellow BBNaija ex-housemate, Ike put out a photo of a disheveled Omashola, sitting by the side of the road, expressing concern over his wellbeing as the latter had spoken out about being depressed. Well on October 29 this year, it soon became apparent that the photo of a homeless-looking Omashola was a press image for his recent single, Do The Thing as Sholzy West

Before then, the Warri-proud ex-housemate had put out a song with Lord Sky and Tacha; Chiwawa, which was a sparkling refix of their heated exchange while in the BBNaija house.

Tacha

BBNaija Housemates song

For this ex-housemate, her disqualification was only a launching pad into bigger opportunities and she’d also been featured on the Chiwawa track alongside fellow former housemate Omashola and the producer of the beats, Lord Sky, with the trio making an appearance in the music video that amassed views to the tune of 200,000.

Venita

More than four years after her BBNaija appearance, Venita came into the music scene by releasing GenZ Cypher. She was featured by Mohammed Usman Adamu, popularly known as Magnito. As a mother of two, Venita isn't new to the entertainment industry. Having previously worked as a video vixen for various artists, this transition into music feels like a natural progression in her multifaceted career.

2020 was the year of the unforgettable pandemic that had everyone indoors, battling one challenge after the other but back home in Nigeria, entertainment was readily available due to the lockdown edition of the Big Brother Nigeria show as the talented housemates enthralled viewers with their skills and quirks.

Laycon

Who is Laycon

Laycon’s mission had been clear from day one on the show, to push his music as a rapper, and from that moment till the very end, he’d succeeded in making his Who Is Laycon album a trending project while in the house, and had emerged winner of the show, converting most of his fans known as Icons to believers of his music. Since then he’s released two other albums; Shall We Begin and I Am Laycon, making exemplary use of BBNaija’s portfolio boosting powers.

Vee

Vee Young & Reckless

The sassy and unapologetic British-accented contestant was one housemate that was hard to overlook as she won over viewers with her matter-of-fact persona and in recent times, the music industry with the release of her debut EP, Young and Reckless. Before that, she had Show which indeed showed fans that the sultry RnB singer was worth her weight in vocal gold.

The recently concluded edition of the reality TV show not only put on display the numerous nuances that make up different humans from different walks of life but also showed artistic versatility especially through the many multi-talented housemates who had several interests with music-making being a common denominator. Here’s a look at all the housemates who have put out music before and after their stay in the BBNaija house.

Whitemoney

Whitemoney Rosemary

Even in the house while doing mundane tasks from making a meal to doing dishes, Whitemoney was ready and able to flip any activity into a song in his high-pitched highlife style so it should come as no surprise to anyone that the season’s winner had put out at least 10 songs such as Iyawo Mi, Your Life, My Heart, Regeku, Rosemary and more, before making it into the big brother house and he has promised to hit the music industry with even more records.

Liquorose

Liquorose GGB Vibes

Already one out of three dancers of the Girls Got Bold collective, with members Ellaley and E4ma, the trio had previously opened up about their desire to venture into the music world as artistes themselves. And on the 23rd of September, while Liquorose was in the Big Brother house, the group premiered their debut single Vibes with Liquorose delivering the rap lines on the Afropop number.

Cross

Cross Feeling Funky

Otherwise known as 'Cross DaBoss', the BBNaija finalist had hit the show with bubbling energy and heart, and soon after the show channelled this into making music with his upbeat and energy-filled Ajebutter 22-featured Feeling Funky

Saskay

Sasquay 5Quad

One of two housemates that made a strong case for the power of the Gen Zs, Saskay was fondly referred to as art thanks to her command of many artistic interests and was quite vocal about her love for hip hop which she’d put to the test on her debut single, 5Quad.

JayPaul

Jaypaul Revival

An unforgettable moment for JayPaul while in the BBNaija house would be the moment his song, Mamie in collaboration with Verchi, was played while the housemates were having some poolside fun. A Spanish-inspired Afropop number, Mamie is not JayPaul’s only musical manifestation as he has a string of other singles such as Rambo, Isolation, and quite recently, Revival

Michael

Fixed Dice

Operating in the music space with the name .SM, Michael had taken the BBNaija house with undeniable charisma and charm that was instantly noted by several ladies, in the house, and on the screen, he also won the task that involved wooing his partner, Saskay with a punchline, so it adds up nicely that the American-based contestant is a rapper with four projects to his name, the most recent being Fixed Dice.

Niyi

Niyi Omo Oro

This ex-housemate had proved to his fellow contenders and viewers of the show that married people are still very much capable of having fun. His recently released single Omo Oro, in collaboration with Peruzzi and Yozzy also stamped this manifesto and shows that there’s more to the ex-housemate than we were privy to.

Big Brother Naija Season 7 premiered on July 23/24, 2022 with 24 housemates. Two new housemates joined on Day 7 and another two on Day 14, bringing the total to 28 housemates. The season also featured a double eviction resulting in the top 6 finalists: Chichi, Phyna, Daniella, Bella, Bryann, and Adekunle. Ijeoma Josephina Phyna Otabor was crowned the winner on October 2, 2022, taking home the grand prize of 100 million Naira. Let's look at the housemates of the season that have ventured into music.

Bryann

Brian Chukwuebuka Chiji, popularly known as Bryann, embarked on his music journey long before joining BBNaija. Although he was already making waves, it was after his impressive run as the BBNaija Season 7 runner-up that his earlier released album, Ileke, truly gained widespread attention and went viral. Despite the buzz around his past work, Bryann has yet to release any new music since his BBNaija stint,

Groovy

Henry Olisaemeka Oche, widely recognized as Groovy, embarked on his music career in 2020 with his debut single, Groovyzone. He followed this with an EP titled Groovy-Hours in 2021. Following his appearance on BBNaija in 2022, Groovy continued to build on his momentum, releasing a 5 track EP, Groovy Way, in 2023.

Big Brother Naija Season 8, dubbed the All Stars edition, premiered on July 23, 2023, with a star-studded lineup of 20 former housemates from previous seasons. This special season brought back fan favourites like Cee-C, Kiddwaya, and Alex Unusual, giving them another shot at the grand prize of 120 million Naira. The journey culminated in a finale where Ilebaye emerged as the winner. Since many of these contestants have been featured in our previous lists of artists, we won't be focusing on them in this recap.

Big Brother Naija Season 9, also known as Big Brother Naija: No Loose Guard, premiered on July 28, 2024. This season features 28 housemates, uniquely paired into 14 duos. However, none of the contestants this season are known for their music careers, so we won't be extending our list of BBNaija housemates who have released songs.

With 8 successful editions done and 1 on the way, it’s become indisputable that BBNaija has contributed to the crop of public figures in the country inspiring youths to greatness, and while this rundown of past housemates who have made music may not be majorly made up of chart-toppers, within them lies potential that should be noted and watched as we never can tell what our next big hit song could come in form of.

The collaboration between Ayra Starr and Seyi Vibez shines brightly on Bad Vibes, as they deliver heartfelt performances that resonate with listeners. The lyrics reflect a desire to distance themselves from negativity, instead focusing on prosperity and positive energy. This track not only showcases their vocal prowess but also highlights their ability to create music that speaks to universal themes, making Bad Vibes a defining moment in contemporary Afrobeats.

4. Jump - Tyla ft Gunna & Skillibeng

Tyla's debut album, Tyla features the dynamic single Jump, released on March 22, 2024. Produced by the acclaimed Sammy Soso, known for his work on Wizkid’s Bad To Me, Kali Uchis' Diosa, and Tyla’s global hit Water, this track is a masterful blend of Afrobeats, dancehall, and hip hop. Jump showcases the collaborative efforts of Tyla, Mocha, Believve, Gunna, Skillibeng, and Sammy Soso, resulting in a groovy and infectious tune that captivates from the first note.

The song features standout contributions from Gunna and Skillibeng, adding layers of depth and diversity to the already rich musical tapestry. Tyla’s opening line, “They never had a pretty girl from Joburg / See me now, and that's what they prefer,” is a catchy and memorable hook that sets the tone for the track. With its genre-fusing sound and irresistible rhythm, Jump is a testament to Tyla's rising star power and the seamless synergy between her, Gunna, and Skillibeng. This track not only highlights Tyla’s unique style and vocal prowess but also cements her place in the global music scene as an artist to watch.

3. Big Big Things - Young Jonn ft. Kizz Daniel & Seyi Vibez

Young Jonn's Big Big Things, a standout track from his debut album Jiggy Forever, has quickly become a favourite since its release on February 23, 2024. Produced by the talented Yung Willis, the song features the dynamic vocals of Kizz Daniel and Seyi Vibez, creating a powerful collaboration that resonates deeply with listeners. The fusion of afrobeats and amapiano results in an infectious party anthem that's perfect for any celebration.

Big Big Things has achieved significant success, peaking at No. 4 on the TurnTable Charts and remaining on the chart for an impressive 18 weeks. The track's popularity is further evidenced by its over 9 million streams on Spotify, highlighting its widespread appeal and replay value. With its groovy beats and energetic performances, Big Big Things showcases Young Jonn's knack for crafting hits and solidifies his place in the music industry as a rising star.

2. Tshwala Bam - TiTom & Yuppe ft Burna Boy & S.N E

Since its release on May 13, 2024, TiTom and Yuppe’s Tshwala Bam, which also included Burna Boy and S. N E, has caused waves across the music sphere. Following the success of the previous version and the Tshwala Bam signature dance, the highly anticipated remix with Burna Boy garnered over 40 million streams within the first month, making it a truly massive hit. Originally composed by Thato Seth Mathobela and Bongani Kenneth Sibanyoni, Tshwala Bam is one of the most upbeat songs in the genre and is beloved for its rhythms and beats.

The track can be considered a chart success as it reached the TurnTable Charts No. 1 and remained at the top for 18 weeks. Its popularity is evident because it tops the Shazam charts in 14 countries such as the UAE, UK, and France. Still, Tshwala Bam not only emphasises the creative chemistry between TiTom, Yuppe, Burna Boy, and S. N E but also stresses the potential of Mathobela and Sibanyoni as producers. This song can be considered a defining moment in amapiano genre history and solidifies the artists’ ability to make music that can climb the charts globally.

1. Showa - Kizz Daniel

Kizz Daniel's hit song Showa was released on March 11, 2024, from the TZA EP. Produced by AyZed, the catchy afrobeats track has gained over 11 million streams on Spotify, proving its popularity. An instrument heard clearly is the Yoruba talking drum, which adds an authentic feel to Showa's distinct and effective beat. The success of the song can be evidenced by the TurnTable Charts, where it was able to rank first and has been on the charts for 16 weeks.

Kizz Daniel performs exceptionally on the song with silk-like vocals and quite the stage presence, while AyZed’s production sets the perfect tone for a modern afrobeats record. This fact, coupled with the song’s catchy beat and its association with Japanese culture, means that Showa remains a popular choice for music selection and dancing. Without a doubt, it is one of the best African songs to hit the market in 2024.

The year 2024 has not been a great year of music by any stretch of the imagination. In contrast, while last year many summer hit singles topped the charts, this year has yet to do the same.

While Afrobeats and amapiano remain popular music genres in Africa, there has yet to be any successful talent discovered in the African music industry.

This stagnation has left many fans craving the thrills and glorious new sounds of what the previous year brought forth. Nevertheless, there are several great records in the first half of 2024 that are worth mentioning. Besides offering streaming success, hit tracks, charts, and giant numbers, these albums have given us a captivating experience. Just with those elements of their melody, tracklists, and instruments, those albums have been able to entice the community to keep continuing with African music.

In this piece, we take a look at ten of the most superb African albums that have been produced so far in 2024. These selections are proof that Africa’s music scene is vast and talented even if some of the biggest names released fewer songs than usual. They include album debuts from emerging artists and comebacks from musicians whose works have been highly anticipated in 2024 in African music.

Here are the 10 best African albums of 2024 so far;

10. King Promise - True to Self

Currently at the No. 57 position on Nigeria’s TurnTable Charts, with a top position on Ghana’s Apple Music album charts, as well as charting in at least 10 other countries’ Apple Music charts, King Promise’s True To Self is one of the best African albums released in the first half of 2024. The album has a total length of 37 minutes and was released on June 14, 2024, under license from 5K Records Ltd and Sony Music Entertainment UK Ltd. The album includes 12 tracks featuring singles like Perfect Combi with Gabzy, Terminator, Favourite Story featuring Olivetheboy and Sarkodie, and Continental featuring Shallipopi.

King Promise’s journey is radical enough to portray his transformation as an artist and determination towards Afrobeats. With each release, he always goes up a notch and enchants the global audience with his work. True To Self combines highlife, Afrobeats, dancehall, and much more into a perfect blend. It is, therefore, untrue that True To Self is just another body of work from King Promise; songs like Paranoid—a slow-tempo song with Fridayy—and the other singles on the album illustrate why True To Self is one of the best music projects to come out of the African continent in 2024.

9. Vibez INC - VICM Vol 1

I’m sure everyone expected Vibez Incorporation Mixtape Vol. 1 by Vibez Inc., led by Seyi Vibez, to be among the best African albums so far. The album not only introduces Muyeez, with his debut song Instagram featuring Seyi Vibez, but it also marks Billion Solar and Nerryckole’s first offering under the record label. Released on May 10, 2024, and dominating Nigeria’s TurnTable Chart, having spent seven weeks on the chart and peaking at No. 1 as of the time of writing this editorial piece, VICM Vol. 1 is undoubtedly a historic release.

The 10-song project features British rapper Tion Wayne and Nigerian singers Bloody Civilian, Dwillsharmony, and Balloranking. VICM Vol. 1 is a blend of street-pop, afro-adura (a sub-genre of street-pop), Afrobeats, and hip-hop. Its relatable lyrics, amapiano-dominated afro-fusion sound, and groovy melodies are already associated with Seyi Vibez, who clearly A&R-ed this project. Having songs named after social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram adds another unique element that stands out on this project.

8. Ruger x BNXN - R&B

Released on April 17, 2024, featuring singles like Romeo Must Die (RMD) which dropped on February 29, 2024, Ruger and BNXN’s joint extended play R&B is one of the best African albums of 2024 so far. Having spent 10 weeks and counting on TurnTable Charts and charting on Apple Music album charts in about 12 countries, including the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, R&B stands out as one of the notable joint projects by Nigerian singers in recent years. While most joint projects are a result of years of friendship or testament to a harmonious relationship between creatives, such as 2 Kings by Olamide and Phyno released in 2015, Ruger and BNXN’s R&B emerged after more than a year-long beef between the two singers.

Aside from the beef-turned-friendship that birthed the project, standout tracks like Ilashe, POE, and Bae Bae, along with the single RMD, make it enjoyable with their sensual melodies.

The melodies in the project are world-class as expected. BNXN and Ruger are proper vocalists with alluring voices and rare songwriting skills, and they only enhance their sound by working with top-tier producers like Sarz, Blaisebeatz, and Kukbeatz.

7. Young Jonn - Jiggy Forever

With his 16-track debut album Jiggy Forever, featuring artists like Don Jazzy, Zlatan, Ya Levis, Sean Paul, Blaqbonez, Kizz Daniel, and Seyi Vibez, Young Jonn sits at No. 7 on our list of the best African albums released in 2024. The album includes hit singles such as Aquafina, Big Big Things, Sharpally, and Go Hard, showcasing Young Jonn's impressive talent and creativity.

Running for 42 minutes, the album features a Chinese interlude sampled in Pot of God produced by ePianoh, as well as groovy tunes like Bahamas, Bucket List, and Full My Tank featuring Don Jazzy. Peaking at No. 2 on Nigeria’s TurnTable Charts and spending 10 weeks on the Official Top 100 Albums chart, Jiggy Forever is undoubtedly one of the best African albums released this year.

6. Illbliss - Sideh Kai

Sideh Kai by Illbliss is the only hip-hop album on our list of the best African albums released in Nigeria this year. With his hard-hitting punchlines, excellent breath control, groovy instrumentals, and brilliant A&R with spot-on features, Illbliss has delivered one of his best albums to date.

The 16-track album features a variety of genres, including trap music, hip-hop, Afrobeats, highlife, and more. It showcases collaborations with talented artists like Umu Obiligbo, ODUMODUBLVCK, Vector, Ladé, Yukel, FAVE, Cobhams Asuquo, Mádé Kuti, and Deborah Prest.

Like the fifth track on the album, the LP is a masterclass. Beyond the well-thought-out collaborations and meticulously curated tracklist, the punchlines are undoubtedly one of the unique selling points of this album.

5. Tems - Born in the Wild

Born in the Wild is another debut album on this list. Following the release of the GuiltyBeatz-produced Me & U alongside Not An Angel in 2023, Tems dropped Love Me Jeje, an afro-fusion record produced by Spax and GuiltyBeatz that samples Seyi Sodimu’s classic of the same title. The 18-track LP was released on June 6, 2024, peaking at No. 3 on Nigeria’s TurnTable album charts. The album features production credits from Tems, Spax, Sarz, London, GuiltyBeatz, Nsikak David, DameDame, and P2J.

Aside from the singles, songs, like Get It Right featuring Asake, Wickedest, Gangsta, Boy O Boy, Free Fall featuring J. Cole, and Turn Me Up, are standout tracks that justify the inclusion of Born in the Wild as one of the best African albums released in 2024. Each track showcases Tems' unique sound and exceptional talent, making this album a must-listen.

4. Victony - Stubborn

Victony’s debut album Stubborn is far from the regular. The direction is unique. The melodies, lyrics, and instrumentation are not only contemporary, the songs are groovy and futuristic. Victony invites a versatile squad of collaborators into the fold, for some of which it’s their first time getting their feet wet in the Afrobeats scene. Teezo Touchdown, Saint JHN, Asake, Shallipoppi, and Shorae are among Stubborn’s special guests.

With collaborations on production from KTIZO, P2J, Gaetan Judd, Blaise Beatz, Nineteen85, Western Weiss, 1Mind, Louis Bell, Brendan Grieve, 255, Harri, Fritz, and Cole; the 14-track album came out on June 21, 2024. The album is charting in over 14 countries’ Apple Music album charts.

The journey to the current status was not a smooth ride for Victony but he had to fight many battles. He fought for a shot at life after a devastating crash and took mainstream relevancy by force and making the music that embodies him. Victony found a way to follow his passion for music, and he displays this in an album that is a quintessential expression of his daring innovation.

3. Kizz Daniel - TZA

Kizz Daniel's EP, TZA (short for Thankz Alot), feels like it was given a working title during its creation, a seemingly disposable title that nobody bothered to change.

The EP features recent singles Twe Twe and Too Busy to be Bae, both ultra-popular hits that have been inescapable since the Detty December period. The former, in particular, merges inventiveness with typical Kizz Daniel functionality, pairing folk drums from Nigeria’s north-central region with the singer’s knack for breezy melodies.

Peaking at number one on the TurnTable album chart, this solo 4-song extended play was released on March 11, 2024. All the songs on the EP—Sooner, Showa, Too Busy to be Bae, and Twe Twe—are hit tracks. The EP boasts production credits from Reward Beatz, AyZed, P. Prime, and Killertunes.

2. Tyla - TYLA

Tyla's debut album, Tyla, was released on March 22, 2024, and features guest appearances from Kelvin Momo, Tems, Gunna, Skillibeng, Becky G, and Travis Scott. Sonically, it blends elements of amapiano, pop, afrobeats, and contemporary R&B, with lyrical themes of empowerment and relationships.

The album has made an impressive impact globally, charting in 30 countries on Spotify and 64 countries on Apple Music, including the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada. Tyla debuted at number 24 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, peaked at number 26 on the Canadian Albums Chart, and reached number 19 on the UK Albums Chart. It also peaked at number 25 on Nigeria’s Turntable Charts.

Tyla transcends cultural barriers, resonating with listeners globally. It marks a significant triumph for Tyla as an artist and a pivotal moment for African pop music.

1. Ayra Starr - The Year I Turned 21

Before Ayra Starr even turned 21, she had already graduated college, signed with the powerhouse West African label Mavin, and dropped her debut album, 19 & Dangerous. Her second LP, The Year I Turned 21, is the next chapter in her pop stardom storybook. While 19 & Dangerous spotlighted an angsty Ayra jaded by toxic past relationships, TYIT21 captures a Grammy-nominated Starr fixated on getting the bag.

Turning 21 is both a milestone and a trope, but Starr’s portrayal across the record feels refreshingly complicated, filled with contradictions and uncertainties. She sparkles on 21, a heartfelt meditation that wrestles with the weight of self-definition.

The album features collaborations with Asake, Anitta, Coco Jones, Giveon, Seyi Vibez, Milar, and includes the single Santa by Rvssian, with Raw Alejandro and Ayra Starr. Producer credits go to London, Marvey Muzique, P2J, Ragee, AOD, Off n Out, Sparrq, Mike Hector, and more.

The Year I Turned 21 peaked at number 1 on the Turntable Charts and charted on Apple Music in over 40 countries. This album marks a significant milestone in Ayra Starr’s career, showcasing her growth and solidifying her status in the music industry.
