The third quarter of 2024 was an eventful period for the Nigerian music industry, marked by remarkable achievements, controversies, and moments that shaped the Nigerian music industry.

From sold-out concerts to chart-topping albums, and from industry critiques to groundbreaking collaborations, here are the top 10 moments that shaped the Nigerian music landscape.

1. Asake sells out O2 Arena for the second time

Firstly, Asake, the YBNL star, delivered an electrifying performance at the O2 Arena on Saturday, September 21, 2024, as part of his Lungu Boy tour. This marked the second time in his three-year career that the Nigerian Afrobeats singer sold out the iconic London venue, following his first O2 show in August 2023. Performing to over 20,000 fans, Asake turned the night into an unforgettable experience with new stage designs and an expanded setlist.

Also, tracks from his newly released album, Lungu Boy, mixed with older hits like Remember, Fuji Vibe, and MMS, had the audience singing along passionately. What made the event even more special was the lineup of guest appearances. This includes Afrobeats giants Wizkid, Stormzy, and others, all of whom graced the stage to perform alongside Asake.

2. Flavour sells out Wembley Arena

Secondly, Nigerian highlife sensation Flavour has officially joined the ranks of Nigerian artists who have sold out the Wembley Arena in London. The 12,500-capacity venue hosted Flavour’s African Royalty Experience tour on August 23, 2024, a night filled with music, dance, and cultural celebration. Following the release of his album African Royalty, Flavour has toured across Europe, stopping in cities like Paris, Lisbon, and London.

His setlist featured fan-favourite tracks like Ada Ada, Nwa Baby, and Oyi, along with more recent hits like Levels. Also, the night was filled with traditional Igbo and Afrobeat rhythms, highlighting Flavour’s signature mix of highlife and modern Afrobeat.

3. Fireboy DML’s album brings Lagbaja back from retirement

Thirdly, Fireboy DML’s much-anticipated fourth studio album, Adedamola, released on August 29, 2024, has become a subject of intense discussion. This is primarily because of the participation of the iconic Nigerian Afrobeat legend, Lagbaja. The collaboration marked Lagbaja’s return from retirement after years of absence. Also, its result is a soulful blend of saxophones, violins, and traditional drums that evokes nostalgia.

In particular, the song Back n Forth stands out for its African rhythms and Fireboy DML’s powerful, emotional lyrics. Lagbaja’s signature bata drums and omele added an unmistakable African essence. Also, his saxophone entrance in the track stirred deep feelings of pride among listeners. Fans were eager to hear Lagbaja, who last performed at the AMVCA in 2022, back in action, delivering verses reminiscent of his classic hits like Nothing for You.

Subsequently, in an Apple Music interview, Fireboy DML revealed that even in the studio session, Lagbaja maintained his mysterious persona by never removing his mask, much to Fireboy’s amazement. The collaboration is considered one of Fireboy’s most successful endeavours, showcasing his ability to mix nostalgia with contemporary sounds.

4. Rema’s homecoming concert in Benin City

Meanwhile, Afrobeats sensation Rema returned to his hometown of Benin City for a spectacular homecoming concert at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on August 30, 2024. This was Rema’s first show on Nigerian soil, and he did not disappoint. The concert drew thousands of fans and became a landmark event for the city. This is why it made it to the list of top 10 moments that shaped the Nigerian music industry in 2024.

Rema’s set was marked by electrifying performances of his hit songs, including Dumebi, Calm Down, and Charm. Special guests such as Mavin Record boss Don Jazzy, as well as Crayon and Shallipopi, made surprise appearances. This added to the excitement of the night.

One heartwarming moment came when Rema gifted two fans N2 million for their creative portraits of him. However, a brief commotion occurred when a fan jumped on stage during his performance of Ozeba. This led Rema to kick the fan off the stage. This action created a dramatic twist to the night but didn’t dampen the overall atmosphere.

5. Wizkid hints at release date for new album 'Morayo'

Moreso, superstar Wizkid may finally be ready to drop his highly anticipated sixth studio album, titled Morayo. This is after teasing fans for months. Set to be released as a tribute to his late mother, who passed away in 2023, the album has been in the making for nearly two years. The singer, who has already released hits like More Love, Less Ego, is building expectations for his fanbase once again.

On September 2, 2024, Wizkid posted cryptic hints on his social media. He suggested the album, or at least a single, might drop on October 1, 2024—Nigeria’s Independence Day. The message, which read, “On the day of independence, the truth shall set us free RRR,” has fueled speculation.

6. Buju Banton’s critique of Afrobeats sparks response from Tems

Additionally, Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton stirred up controversy during an interview on the Drink Champs podcast, where he criticized the global dominance of Afrobeats. According to Buju, Afrobeats lacks depth and borrows heavily from Jamaican reggae and dancehall without acknowledging its roots. His statements provoked a strong reaction from both the African and Caribbean music communities.

However, Nigerian Afrobeats star Tems responded thoughtfully during an interview on the Shopping The Sneakers podcast. She explained that Afrobeats, especially in Nigeria, is primarily about creating a “vibe” and providing an escape for its listeners. This contrasts with the socio-political messaging often found in reggae and dancehall. Tems’ nuanced answer sparked a wider conversation about the cultural significance and evolution of both genres.

7. Rema’s experimentation with 'HEIS' album

Furthermore, Nigerian superstar Rema shocked the world with his latest album HEIS. This took bold experimental turns in terms of sound and style. In an interview with Complex Music, Rema shared that he wanted to push boundaries and break away from his usual Afrofusion style. This is despite his label’s initial reluctance.

The album blends various genres, incorporating elements of rock, R&B, and traditional African sounds. By this, drawing comparisons to Kanye West’s genre-bending Yeezus album. Rema embraced these comparisons, stating that he intended to introduce new textures to Afrobeats without losing his African roots. His willingness to take risks has paid off. HEIS is now being hailed as a forward-thinking project that signals the future of Afrobeats.

8. Rema, Omah Lay, Shallipopi featured on EA FC25 game soundtrack

EA FC25

Also, as part of moments that shaped the Nigerian music industry in 2024, Nigerian Afrobeats stars Rema, Omah Lay, and Shallipopi were featured on the official soundtrack for EA FC25. This is the rebranded version of EA Sports’ popular FIFA game series. Released on September 27, 2024, the soundtrack includes 114 songs from global artists. So, this is with Rema, Omah Lay, and Shallipopi representing Nigerian Afrobeats.

This recognition shows the increasing influence of Afrobeats in mainstream global culture, especially in sports and gaming. Past Nigerian artists like Davido, Olamide, and BNXN have also been featured on FIFA soundtracks. However, this year’s inclusion signals that Afrobeats is becoming a staple of the franchise.

9. Burna Boy’s iconic collaboration with Hugo Boss

Consequently, Burna Boy continues his global rise, not just as an artist but as a cultural icon. The Grammy-winning Afrobeats star was featured in Hugo Boss latest campaign. This is alongside global heavyweights such as Naomi Campbell and David Beckham. Burna Boy’s presence in the campaign emphasizes his crossover appeal. This solidifies his role as a global brand ambassador for African music and culture.

10. Psquare's final dissolution

Lastly, one of the moments that shaped the Nigerian music industry in the third quarter of 2024 is the P-Square dissolution. After years of on-and-off performances and public feuds, Paul Okoye officially confirmed the final dissolution of P-Square, one of Nigeria’s most iconic music duos. In a candid Instagram Live session, Paul revealed his decision to focus on his solo career. He cited frustrations with the group's dynamics as his reason. P-Square, once known for chart-topping hits and electrifying performances, now belongs to the history books as one of Africa’s most beloved and influential acts. The final split marks the end of an era. Also, it opens new chapters for both Paul and Peter Okoye in their individual pursuits.

These 10 moments have shaped the Nigerian music industry. It shows its resilience, creativity, and global appeal. As the year unfolds, fans can expect more exciting developments from the country's vibrant music scene.

The singer has come full circle, returning to his roots and staying true to himself, and it shines through in this project where he seamlessly blends his different personas into a relatable and captivating whole.

Over the years, this exceptionally talented singer-songwriter has evolved, continuously sharing glimpses of his life at various stages. From an innocent lover boy to a rising star, navigating wealth, global recognition, personal struggles, and self-discovery, his music has mirrored this journey. With his debut album Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps, the world was introduced to a 23-year-old breakout star whose reality was centred on love, emotions, and fantasies. A year later, following chart dominance, awards, newfound wealth, and the challenges of fame, his sophomore album APOLLO reflected a shift from fantasy to reality. Fireboy began to explore themes of lust, sex, self-awareness, and introspection, as seen in tracks like '24 (Interlude),' where he grappled with the pressures of life in 'Airplane Mode' and even touched on the subject of mortality and legacy in 'Remember Me.'

Fast forward two years, and the now 26-year-old artist has spent three years navigating the highs and lows of global stardom. His experiences have shaped him, as he candidly admits in the opening track 'Change' from his third album, Playboy. As the album title suggests, the once soft-hearted Fireboy has transformed into a more hardened version of himself—a "Yoruba demon," as it is called —navigating a world that has toughened him. He’s become more carefree, indulgent, and detached from emotions, and for the sake of his sanity, he's decided to embrace the wild ride, even documenting his experiences with vices like MDMA in 'Peru.'

Now, five years into his superstar journey, Fireboy has seen it all. He appears to have a deeper understanding of himself and life, leading him to embrace his multifaceted identity. His latest album, titled Adedamola after his real name, represents this synthesis of his different personalities into a cohesive, authentic whole.

The album opens with 'Iseoluwa,' a groovy yet reflective track that translates to "the wonders of God" in Yoruba. The song's elegant introduction features the omele (a baby talking drum) flanked alongside the gangan (talking drum), creating a Selense or Jenleke vibe, meaning it’s not overboard, calm, but filled with enough rhythm to keep you shaking. Fireboy’s delivery is swift and focused, expressing gratitude, self-reflection, and optimism: "Life has been good to me; I do not take this with levity," he declares. The track, produced by Bassiqally and Nxrth (Fireboy's brother), is enhanced by soothing female backup vocals sprinkled across and a magical saxophone performance, making it a perfect intro and an instant Fireboy classic.

The energy picks up with 'Call Me,' a vibrant Afropop track that showcases Fireboy’s versatility beyond being tagged an "Afrobeats artiste." With a '90s pop influence, the song sees the loverboy confessing his love and commitment, while the log drum, often referred to as the "808" of modern Afrobeats, adds depth. The album then shifts gears with 'Ecstasy,' where Identity is switched as the frivolous playboy Fireboy comes to life. The song, themed around sex, sweat, flashbacks, and lust, features veteran Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, whose saxophone performance adds soul to the track. However, the use of the log drum here slightly disrupts the glossiness expected in a song about lust—a balance that Fireboy had previously achieved on 'Tattoo' from his APOLLO album.

'Hell and Back' follows, where Fireboy’s vocal prowess takes centre stage, reminding listeners of his ability to deliver across genres regardless of the soundscape or tempo. The singer-songwriter shows he can sing-sing! like he did on 'Sing' with Oxlade. The song is both groovy and soulful, with the log drum, violin, and saxophone creating a rich soundscape. The album’s first guest appearance comes from Lojay on 'Letting Go,' a mid-tempo track about the difficulty of moving on. While it’s a solid record, one might expect more from the collaboration given the capabilities of both artistes.

Listeners are finally treated to one of the most anticipated tracks on the album, where the saxophone and violin blend together to evoke a wave of nostalgia. The tenor saxophone’s entrance is delivered with such vigour that it immediately stands out; it’s jazzy, bold, seasoned with experience, and unmistakably marked by Lagbaja's signature style. Traditional instruments like the omele and Lagbaja’s iconic bata drum provide the perfect rhythm, allowing Fireboy to flow effortlessly with his soul-stirring lyrics: "Sometimes I know it, sometimes I don’t know how to show it, but somewhere at the back of your mind, I hope that you know I love every single moment with you." Once again, Fireboy showcases his vocal prowess with subtle falsettos while performing alongside his childhood idol, who has been pretty inactive in the music scene, with the last time the icon surprising popped out being the AMVCA performance in 2022. To heighten the nostalgic feel, Lagbaja delivers a sensational verse that transports listeners back to the era of classic hits like the 2000-released 'Nothing for You.' The heavy traditional drums give the track a distinctively African and deeply rooted essence—thankfully, without any log drums. It’s a flawlessly executed song.

The album then slows down with the solemn acoustic tune 'Ready,' featuring Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader Jon Batiste on keys. The soul-stirring chords provide a canvas for Fireboy to fully spread his wings and soar, which he does effortlessly on this track—he truly shines. Although Fireboy's vocal and lyrical delivery has been strong throughout the album, this song especially highlights his vocal brilliance. The energy picks up again with 'Wande’s Bop,' a track where Fireboy pays homage to the Afropop "source"—Wande Coalwhom he has consistently credited as a major influence. The song is intentionally crafted to echo the sound of Wande Coal’s 2011-2016 era, bearing similarities to 'The Kick.' It’s a club banger that Fireboy delivers with ease. The high tempo continues with the Afro-funk track 'Change Your Life,' dominated by vibrant trumpet lines, once again showcasing why Fireboy is the complete package—a true pop star capable of delivering across various genres.

One of the album's standout moments is 'Obaa Sima,' a song that, despite being released earlier, feels even more powerful in the context of the album. It's a prime example of how singles can find new life within an album, showing listeners the connection that might be missing as a single. This track is followed by 'Need Me,' which sonically picks up where 'Obaa Sima' left off. You might think it’s the previous song still playing until you realise it’s actually a new track. The song's themes focus on love and commitment. 'Yawa,' another pre-released song, sounds even better within the album's framework, with Fireboy's delivery on the second verse standing out as particularly impressive. Interestingly, the song features label colleagues Olamide and Asake as backup vocalists.

The album is close to curtain-falls with 'Everyday,' definitely a fan favourite because of how rhythmically pleasing it is yet poignant. The absence of unnecessary log drums makes it soulful and glossy, allowing the trumpet and the guitars to properly pierce through—something that could have also been achieved in 'Ecstasy.' The album concludes with 'Jon's Interlude,' a piano rendition of Fireboy's lyrics from 'Ready.' While soothing, this choice might not have been the most fitting way to end the album, especially after the spectacular introduction. A more impactful conclusion could have been achieved with an introspective-themed vocal delivery on a similar piano progression, helping to ground listeners after the album's dynamic journey. Additionally, if 'Jon's Interlude' were to remain, it might have worked better as a middle track, aligning more with the traditional role of an interlude. Overall, the album's ending could have been more compelling.

READ ALSO - Although experimental, Asake's 'Lungu Boy' comes across as the least of the trio

The production on the album was brilliant, with standout performances from producer and bassist Bassiqally and producer Nxrth, who worked on more songs than others. Bassiqally contributed to seven songs, including gems like 'Iseoluwa,' 'Back n Forth,' and 'Change Your Life,' while Nxrth came in behind with production credits on five records. The album also featured legendary ace producer ID Cabasa, alongside other incredible talents like Pheelz, Semzi, Magicsticks, Blaisebeatz, Telz, Jon Batiste, and others, which is why the album was so cohesive and organised, considering the many experienced creatives involved in the production.

Adedamola production credits

On Adedamola, Fireboy is able to merge his personalities as a bad boy and a lover boy on this album, hence the allusion to being a "Casanova with Roses" who would still open doors, send flowers, and do all that lovey-dovey stuff, which points to why he must have referred to the album as home. "Every single part of me went into this album. It's so personal, and it feels nostalgic, like a call to home. That's why it’s titled Adedamola," he said in an interview. With this project, Fireboy reminds everyone that he is truly in love with music and very intentional about his craft. However, this project could have had some commercial edge over others if it had a couple of bangers like 'Wande's Bop' to keep the clubs going. Regardless, the singer-songwriter makes very enjoyable music and will be here for a very long time.

Fireboy is one of the few Nigerian modern-age artistes who can properly curate an album with thematic and sonic cohesion. On this project, the singer demonstrated that there’s probably no need to over-experiment to show growth. It is very possible to stretch your soundscape while still remaining cohesive, as he has done on this album. Although it may not be his best album, it is definitely just slightly behind his debut album 'Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps'. However, considering the spectrum of growth (as you wouldn’t expect him to create an LTG-type project at his current age), this might actually be his best project so far. Regardless, the gap between this album and LTG is not so wide, and it is definitely in the Album of the Year conversation as it stands. A solid 8.7.

According to the 28-year-old singer, he wanted the album to theme around nostalgia, hence the reason why he decided to have iconic acts like Lagbaja and Seun Kuti on the project. Speaking about the Lagbaja record 'Back n Forth,' he said:

"That’s a special record, right there. It means a lot to me getting a legend like Lagbaja on that record, in [the] time that we are in now. One major theme around the album is nostalgia—there’s this nostalgic feeling when you listen to the album, so it’s only right that I employed my legends in the game to help me push this message. Right from the very beginning, I knew this record was special, and I could not wait for everyone to listen to it."

Speaking further on whether he was able to see Lagbaja's real face, as the icon's brand is based on wearing masks and maintaining anonymity, Fireboy DML revealed that the icon didn’t show his face throughout their studio session. He said:

"You would not believe this: [Lagbaja] was masked up in the studio. It was crazy—I did not get to see his face. I had a few interesting thoughts; I wanted to ask him if I could see his face! But you know, all that matters is that we made the music. That’s what makes Lagbaja, Lagbaja. You know, “Lagbaja,” where I’m from, in the Yoruba language, means, "Mr. Nobody," an anonymous person; so it’s only right that I do not get to see his face. I’m glad he got to be on the record—a special person, a special artist, a special record."

In this story, we pay homage to Nigerian music videos by highlighting 10 of the best-animated ones.

One thing about Nigerian music, even when it was generally not as good as it currently is, we always got served with good music videos that pieced together quality directing, choreography, styling and a resolution that was for the most part, at par with videos in that era. With the right factors coming together to get our music more attention first on the local scene before the international, this attention to visual details had become an additional booster that had piqued the interest of music stations to spin local videos and music enthusiasts to tune in. So in this story, we pay homage to Nigerian music videos but take a spin on it by highlighting the animated ones.

What are visualisers?

Apparently, visualizers are different from music videos in that while they're visuals that accompany a song, they're typically very simplistic with the aim of bringing the song to life in an easy-to-follow manner that is still interesting. Most times they're digital and are animated.

See the 10 Nigerian music videos that are animated;

1. Suuru Lere by Lagbaja

Lagbaja's Suuru Lere is an 8-minute-long track that recounts Nigeria's political history, right from the amalgamation to the moment we gained independence and the onslaught of ensuing coups. All of these events were rendered in animation to provide viewers young and old with a well-detailed and graphic depiction of the circumstances surrounding our democracy, which was the crux of the song; patience with each other despite our myriad differences in the face of the democratic mandate.

Today, Lagbaja's Suuru Lere is 22 years old as it was released in the year 2000 but it seems the message in his song and the visuals collectively flew right over the nation's head with the state of affairs mirroring that depicted in the video.

2. Ijoya by Weird MC

Weird MC's Ijoya was a huge hit in 2006 when it was released, and it launched the rapper into the limelight. Its fully animated video had further endeared the song to its viewers, as kids most especially were in love with its colorful graphics that saw Weird MC go from swaggering in front of a Hummer Jeep to dancing with an all-female troupe as well as talking drum players.

The video was also additionally brilliant in that the much-loved animation had distracted viewers from Weird MC’s utterly masculine-presenting style which may have rubbed the highly normative Nigerian society the wrong way if rendered in the typical life-like form.

3. For Instance by 2Baba

Its simple video which was in animated form saw 2Baba appear in many scenes from traffic to the club and in newspapers and this colourful depiction had been well-received, earning the video a formidable run on music video stations.

4. Action Film by M.I Abaga featuring Brymo

The late 2000s and early 2010s were owned by iconic rapper M.I Abaga and in 2010 he gave TV an unforgettable moment with the video of his Action Film. It had been animated, action and sleuth filled with M.I as the main character carrying out stunts from a car to a plane, dressed up in a sharp suit in a bid to rescue a kidnapped woman.

Towards the end, Ice Prince made a timely cameo, coming in to save M.I when the chips were down and these elements and its close depiction of the chaos in Lagos and a typical action movie served to make the video a favourite.

5. Surrender- Mr Eazi ft Simi

Mr Eazi has with his EmPawa initiative revolutionized the music business and one of the ways in which he did this was by popularising visualizers.

Mr Eazi’s Surrender is a perfect example of a visualizer as he was depicted dancing with reckless abandon beside a giant waist adorned with waist beads, swaying to the beats of the music. The animated Mr Eazi also threw in some hilarious dance moves that illustrated kicker lines like “I know say I no strong like Mike Tyson I know say I no get the voice like Michael Jackson.”

Surrender was a hit with the Poka Studios animated video, which amassed 11m views, which is double the number of views the official video got. Since then, Mr Eazi has made a killing with animated visualizers like the Chronixx-featured She Loves Me and visuals for recent singles like 'She Loves Me'.

6. Joeboy by Lonely

Embarking on a binge of Joeboy’s videos will reveal that the Afropop sensation is a fan of animated visualizers and this makes perfect sense given that the star is signed to Mr Eazi’s EmPawa Initiative.

Also created by Poka Studios, Joeboy has, with his visualisers, not only provided viewers with a colourful video but hilarious ones from Call to Lonely. The visualizer for Call was released at the height of the pandemic, proving to be the smart way out given the restriction on movement and gathering. It was well received and sits at 7.6 million views at the moment. While it's his most viewed animation video, the visualizer for Lonely takes the cake by virtue of its funniness.

In Lonely, Joeboy’s aloneness is juxtaposed against a bunny with a thriving love life who takes advantage of the singer's space and telephone to woo his bunny lover while Joeboy waits on his love interest.

Eventually, Joeboy’s wait is rewarded just as the bunny is jilted by his lover for a buff-looking bunny and Joeboy gets to kick the callous rabbit out. The visualizers to Call and Lonely also feature interesting cameos of Joeboy's label boss Mr Eazi who plays random roles from being the driver of the golf cart in Call to being the delivery man of the bunny's carrots in Lonely, serving to give them Marvel level twists.

7. Rora by Reekado Banks

The visualiser for Reekado Banks Rora had been released before the more popular official music video but this did not hinder the video, from getting substantial clicks.

In fact, to date, a total of 15 million people watched Reekado Banks sing, put the lyrics into action and dance with his animated love interest in the Poka Studios created visualiser for Rora

8. In My Maserati by Olakira

Olakira’s In My Maserati blew up with a dance move and a challenge in tow. These had been off the back of his visualiser, which had stitched together hilarious scenes where he drove his lover around first in a shopping cart and then a wheelbarrow before finally, they hopped in an actual Maserati.

Directed by the self-same Poka Studios behind Mr Eazi and Joeboy's visuals, the visualizer had contributed to giving Olakira his first hit song with In My Maserati

9. Greed by Jinmi Abduls featuring Oxlade

In the Oxlade featured song, Greed, Jinmi Abduls vocalizes about his act of infidelity where he cheated on his lover due to greed and is now begging her forgiveness.

So in the visualiser that Naiky Toonz produced, we get emotion-filled scenes of Jinmi tailing his lover all around town while apologising. And then a scene with Oxlade sees him confessing to a priest who hilariously joins him in apologising to his wronged lover, but to no avail.

10. Thunder Fire You by Ric Hassani

Right from the audio, Ric Hassani’s Thunder Fire You elicited laughter so it was only right that the video did justice to the song.

As a result, Ric Hassani made use of a visualiser, with a few scenes depicting his ill-treatment from his lover followed by literal and swift retribution through thunder strikes on her and her friend.

It gets even funnier when God and the angels weigh in from heaven to express their displeasure and eventually met out punishment on the lover even faster than Ric himself could.

Other animated Nigerian music videos include Olamide's Love No Go Die and Yung L's Wizkid featured Eve Bounce Remix. What other animated music videos do you know of? Add them in the comment section.
