Tiwa Savage & Asa - Emotions Lyrics

Sunset in paradise
Then we wake up to the sunrise
We go write our story tonight, yeah
And anywhere you go, my darling
Remember say my love go dey for you
Where you dey go, time no dey
I don't want to give up on you
Serereo, Serereo, Serereo, Serere, oh yeah

Drown me in your emotions
Save all your love for me
I wanna live and die with you
Ma gba gbe oo
Drown me in your emotions
Save all your love for me
I wanna live and die with you
Ma gba gbe oo

Feeling all this emotion
Confusion in the elation
My clarity find me
But love, where do I find you?
You leave me holding onto broken dreams
I thought we had that love so strong and real
The memories won't set me free
If this is love, then I'm in too deep
Oh turn around, turn around, darling
Do what is right

Drown me in your emotions
Save all your love for me
I wanna live and die with you
Ma gba gbe oo
Drown me in your emotions
Save all your love for me
I wanna live and die with you
Ma gba gbe oo

Don't forget me where you go
I'll be right here even when it's slow
Come sunshine even when it snows
I'm the mother fucking light in your dark

Multi award winning Nigerian singer, Asa is set to captivate audiences once again with her latest single titled, Odo.

The talented artist, who has charmed fans for nearly two decades with her soulful music, has announced an eagerly anticipated release scheduled for Thursday, February 1, 2024.

In an announcement shared on January 30, 2024, via her official X platform, Asa revealed the exciting news, sparking enthusiasm among her dedicated fanbase. This upcoming single marks her first release of 2024, following her last offering in May 2022 with the enchanting children's lullaby Little Darling.

Known for her understated demeanor, Asa has carved a niche for herself as one of Nigeria's premier composers, infusing her music with rich African Folk elements. Her breakout came with the self-titled debut album Asa (also known as Asha), which earned her the prestigious Headies Album of the Year Prize.

The artist continued to delight fans in 2022 with the release of her album V, where she ventured into Afrobeats, showcasing her versatility. The album featured a collaboration with Wizkid, a standout moment that unfortunately faced challenges as the track was later removed from streaming platforms due to copyright infringements.

The month of March is popular for being the month women are celebrated, from the not too long ago created International Women's Day and now to Mother's Day. While we might have the Mother’s Day celebration for as long as we can remember, it remains a special and heartwarming one for most which underlines the fact that mothers cannot be over-celebrated. As a result, we’ve compiled a quick list of some Nigerian songs extolling the virtues of mothers so you can employ them to serenade them and make their day. Here are 5 Nigerian songs to celebrate your mothers with this Mother's Day:

1. Sweet Mother- Prince Nico Mbarga:

It goes without saying that this playlist would be incomplete without this song. The song itself is almost as old as the relationship of several Millennials and Gen Zs with their mothers. Due to this, it has served as one of the very best songs with which we re-acknowledge the many sacrifices undergone by our mothers for us and appreciate them anew in the process.

ALSO READ: A Mother's Day Playlist: Simi, Chike, Harmonize, Wendy Shay & More

2. Mama Mi- Wizkid

Just like the song listed above, Wizkid decided to go the highlife route to serenade his mother with affirmations of love but in his case, he employed his native tongue, Yoruba and one can guess this was done with the intention of hitting home harder. Full of resonance and candour, it is safe to say that Mama Mi is one song that captures the awe our mothers have us in.

3. Mama- Adekunle Gold

Even without his co-sign from the Headies recent award show where he won the award for best songwriter, Adekunle Gold’s writing skills has never been up for debate. It’s these skills he brings to life in his song about his mother, even going as far as to sing; “Ta lonje superman, when I have you mummy”

If you think your mom is a supermom, this one is definitely for her.

ALSO READ: International Women's Day: Celebrating 10 Women Behind the Music We Love

4. Mama- Flavour ft. Chidinma

With this list,  we also get a brief thesis on the universality of the word ‘mama,’ a word which given the song lyrics whether sung in Yoruba or in this case, Igbo, is synonymous to unconditional love and care. This collaboration from Chidinma and Flavour is one heartfelt entry of songs that capture the beauty of a loving mother as they both promise to do anything for their mothers.

Is your mother your everything and are you willing to do anything for her? Well I guess this song is your song then.

5. So Beautiful- Asa

Soulful and reverent, Asa really paid homage to the beautiful qualities of mothers by creating an equally beautiful song. In So Beautiful, Asa likens mothers to deities or goddesses as she sings “Orisha bi iya o ko o si laiye” which loosely means that there is no goddess like mother on earth.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mother out there who embodies the messages in these Nigerian songs and more. What song(s) here best describes your mother? Dedicate it to her in the comments section below!

The sonic-artiste gave his music counterparts their deserved flowers and respect.

Nigerian sonic artist, Olawale Ibrahim Ashimi Ọlọfọrọ, popularly known as Brymo, has commented on fellow musicians Beautiful Nubia and Asa's music.

Beautiful Nubia is a veteran folk songwriter, music composer, and band leader, while Asa is a Nigerian-French soul singer, songwriter, and recording artist, both of whom are contributing majorly to the richness of Nigerian music as an export to other parts of the world.

Brymo, who recently released his debut sonic album "Mansa", in a twitter space that he hosted on March 15th, 2023, tagged "Pleasure and Wait (Pain)..." after he was asked for his view by a fan, spoke highly of Beautiful Nubia and Asa.

According to Brymo, Beautiful Nubia is a veteran who taught him the ropes on how to succeed as an independent artist making timeless music. The controversial Brymo also went on to laud Asa as the pioneer of alternative music in Nigeria, a path that has borne several other incredible acts who are not pressured to make "club" songs to be considered "successful."

ASA

Asa - Fire On The Mountain Lyrics

Intro
Mmm
Worry, oh, oh
Mmm

Chorus
There is fire on the mountain
And nobody seems to be on the run
Oh, there is fire on the mountain top
And no one is a-running

Verse 1
I wake up in the morning
Tell you what I see on my TV screen
I see the blood of an innocent child
And everybody's watching
Now I'm looking out my window
And what do I see?
I see an army of a soldier man
Marching across the street, yeah

Verse 2
Hey, Mr. Soldier man
Tomorrow is the day you go to war
But you are fighting for another man's cause
And you don't even know him
Ooo...!
What did he say to make you so blind
To your conscience and reason?
Could it be love for your country?
Or for the gun you use in killing?

Chorus
So... there is fire on the mountain
And nobody seems to be on the run
Oh, there is fire on the mountain top
And no one is a running

Verse 3
Hey, Mr. Lover man
Can I get a chance to talk to you?
'Cause you are fooling with a dead man's corpse
And you don't know what you do
So you say you have a lover
And you love her like no other
So you buy her a diamond that someone has died on
Don't you think there something wrong with this?

Verse 4
Tell me!
Who's responsible for what we teach our children?
Is it the Internet or the stars on television?
Why? Oh why? Why? Oh, Why? Oh!
So little Lucy turns sixteen
And like the movie she's been seeing
She has a lover in her daddy
She can't tell nobody till she makes the evening news

Chorus
For there is fire on the mountain
And there is nobody seems to be on the run
Oh, there is fire on the mountain top
And no one is a running, oh yes

Bridge
One day the river will overflow
And there'll be no where for us to go
And we will run, run
Wishing we had put out the fire, oh!!!

Chorus
For there is fire on the mountain, yeah, yeah
And there ain't nobody seems to be on the run
Nobody, nobody, oh!
Oh, there is fire on the mountain top
And no one is a running, so, yeah, yeah, yeah

Outro
There is fire on the mountain
(Fire in Africa, oh...!)
Nobody seems to be on the run
(Fire everywhere, everywhere in the sea, yeah!)
Fire on the mountain top
(Fire in the ocean, la-da!)
No one is a running!
Fire on the mountain
Nobody seems to be on the run
Fire on the mountain

The Nigerian society is currently breathing through its mouth due to the national election frenzy, giving time to reflect on vital Nigerian songs to help during this time.

The ongoing Nigerian national election, which has had the citizens at the edge of their chairs, has put so much tension in the air. In light of this, here are 23 songs to listen to during the election season.

On Saturday, February 25, 2022, Nigerians trooped out in large numbers to actively participate in the 2023 presidential, senate, and house of representatives elections. The exercise, which is still ongoing in the case of the result announcement as of Monday, February 27th, 2022, has attracted so much attention from different societal and age classes of the nation.

With the governing elections on March 11th, here are some songs to keep the momentum going in reclaiming our country!

  1. Sound Sultan ft M.I Abaga - 2010\

Sound Sultan, the late singer, rapper, and fashion enthusiast, featured the buzzing M.I. Abaga on the song "2010," which was released in 2011. The groovy hip-hop song that emphasizes the then-Nigerian government's promises of remarkable development throughout the country by 2010 turned out to be a fallacy filled with hardship, stagnancy, and lies. The song urges the citizens to "wake up," exercise their power as people, and demand better governance.

2. This is Nigeria - Falz

Another masterpiece by Rapper, singer, songwriter and activist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz released 'This is Nigeria" in 2018. Inspired by American singer Childish Gambino's "This is America," the hip-hop song highlights the nation's socio-political ills, such as government decay, fraud, police brutality, and religious fanaticism, among other societal ills.

3. Burna Boy - Collateral Damage

Known for consistently using his music as a tool to speak about societal issues, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, released "Collateral Damage" in 2018 off his Grammy-nominated "African Giant" album.

The groovy afro-fusion tune produced by Kel P highlights the in-depth corrupt operations orchestrated by government officials across all parastatals - an unending scene of intense looting that, of course, continues to drag the country backward. Burna Boy speaks equally highly of the cowardice displayed by the people in this song, citizens who are supposed to take on the leaders they elect with their votes, but who cowardly do not speak up in the face of oppression.

4. Burna Boy - 20-10-20

Released nine days after the Nigerian Armed Forces shot at peaceful protesters in Lekki, Lagos State on 20th of October 2022. The Grammy-winning singer painted a vivid picture of the massacre that went down that day. The bloody event that put a deadly halt to the peaceful protest of the Nigerian youths against police brutality and bad government was put into perspective by the singer, emphasizing the fact that the Nigerian heroes that were gruesomely killed by the government while exercising their rights will never be forgotten.

5. Falz ft Sir Dauda - How Far

Again, Falz makes the point with his ever-conscious personality as an artiste. The song, which was released in 2014 as part of his "Wazup Guy" album, features familiar face Sir Dauda and is an introspective song that takes a toll on the country's statganant activities since its independence in 1960. Falz and Sir Dauda are asking "how far?" which directly translates to "what's happening?" due to the backwardness of the nation since its independence. Interestingly, the song emphasizes how the people continue to suffer while the country's leaders and elite continue to advance through looting, corruption, and other heartbreaking means. part of its lyrics read:

Someone told me long ago say life go better.
Still we dey under the weather
So someone tell me how far
This is 1960 we Don dey wake even now self we still dey the matter.
How far.
I beg tell me how far.

6. M.I Abaga - Wild Wild West

Nigerian ace rapper Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I. Abaga, comes into the conversation with the song "Wild Wild West." Released in 2010 off his "MI2 The Movie" album, the song, although directly speaking about the horrific situation of "Jos," at the time highlighted the incompetence of the Nigerian government in ensuring the protection of lives and property, which indeed is the reality of most Nigerian society. M.I. emphasizes how bad the situation is and how people have no choice but to defend themselves against external threats in this song. Lyrics read:

Better get your gun
Better get your vest
'Cause in J town is the wild wild west
Down here everyone curse, no one bless
Nobody care, nobody notice
So know this, until you feel the gun blast
Nobody gon' sleep and nobody gon' rest
Down here everyone curse, no one bless
'Cause in J town is the wild wild west

7. M.I Abaga - Craze

Released off his "MI2 The Movie" album as well, "Craze," as "unserious" as the title, delivery, and beat tempo of the song are, speaks a lot about what the Nigerian society has turned into. Vote rigging, vote buying, heirachy intimidation, low living standards, stagnant educational standards, kidnapping, and other issues that plague the country are highlighted. Lyrics read:

Lets face the fact
That the people are slim and the
Governors fat
And the people laboring, only
The oga relax
It's just a matter of time, the
People gonna react
People wanna eat but there's
No money at all
So they gotta be sharp coz the
Governors dull
People struggle and toil, others
Chopping them all
Some people koko with oil, others
Are chopping the oil

8. African China - Mr. President

A classic from the Reggae-Dancehall singer African China, even though it was released as far back as 2006, continues to be very relevant in today's Nigerian society. Speaking on bad leadership, poor infrastructure, and a poor standard of living amidst other difficulties that continue to plague the society. Lyrics reads:

Food e no dey
Brother eh water no dey
And our country no good o
Everyday for thief
One day for owner e
Poor man wey thief maggi
Omo, dem go show im face
for crime fighter Rich man wey thief money
Omo, we no dey see their face
for crime fighter
Tell me something now rudeboy
Rich man go dey halla prayer Poor man go dey shout Rich man go dey halla prayer Poor man go dey shout Make una lead us well
No let this nation to fall inside well

9. Brymo - Down

The sonic artiste who loves to speak in parables paints the picture of a crumbling society, which evidently equates to the Nigerian society where "everything goes." Irregularities, confusion, chaos, etc. are the order of the day, and people continue to live in this society. As expected, this aforementioned society continues to sink into wretchedness and underdevelopment as the "anyhowness" persists. Lyrics goes:

Something dey go round town
People dey go downtown
The world is spinning round round
The world is going downtown

People dey go uptown
Anyway anyhow now now
Chop your own and clean mouth now
We print and loot and sharе around

Them say the priest
E dеy pray for the thief
Shadaka for Allah
Blood for the spirit

People no bother
Dem they wait on the Lord fa
Rere run
O run

10. 8tch - 9-5 in Lagos

A storytelling rap song that paints the struggle of surviving in the work space of the city of Lagos. "Lagos" in this sense paints how hard it is for even the educated middle class in a society like Nigeria.

11. Asa - Fire on The Mountain

The Nigerian-French singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist contributes her quota to this list with the evergreen "Fire on the Mountain." The soothing tune, released in 2007, highlights the hostile environment that Nigerian (African) society has become. Plagued with violence, corruption, ethnic war, bigotry, and other things, Asa foresees that these dominant societal ills will eventually lead to the doom of this society. Lyrics reads:

There is fire on the mountain
And nobody seems to be on the run
Oh, there is fire on the mountaintop
And no one is a-runnin'

I wake up in the mornin'
Tell you what I see on my TV screen
I see the blood of an innocent child
And everybody's watchin'

Now I'm looking out my window
And what do I see?
I see an army of a soldier man
Marching across the street, yeah

Hey, Mr. Soldier man
Tomorrow is the day you go to war
But you are fighting for another man's cause
And you don't even know him

12. Dremo - Thieves in Uniform

Released on October 4th, 2022, which was sixteen days before the Nigerian Armed Forces shot at peaceful protesters in Lekki, Lagos State, on October 20th, 2022, the hip-hop song was the perfect song during the #ENDSARS protest. The title "Thieves in Unfetter" refers to the intense police brutality Nigerians have experienced, but it also refers to the intense government brutality they have experienced.  Lyrics read:

You can never trust Sars with a gun
A de le trust ole pelu ibon
So the difference is not really much
Dem just be armed robbers in uniform
Dem no dey try protect us (protect us)
They only tryna extort us (extort us)
The government won’t even say a word (FEM)
Not until their family dey involved

Its so sad mehn its so sad
So many dreams cut short cos of one gunshot
Mane we end Sars sharp all this shi*t gaz stop
How can your first check point be your last busstop (Damn!)

13. Fela - Coffin for Head of State

14. Fela - Authority Stealing

15. The Cavemen - Brother's Keeper

16. Tekno - Freetown

The song, Produced by Xtofa is a socially conscious single released on 24th of February 2023, a day before the general election in Nigeria. On 'Freetown', Tekno highlights some of the harsh conditions the Nigerian people are forced to live with. He also lends his voice against the promulgators of these harsh conditions. Lyrics read:

What goes up must come down
When I dey vex dey calm down
Sierra Leone is freetown
But the people no dey see chaao

So me go down to Lagos city
Giant of Africa wey no get constant electricity
Say me go to the street too many people i dey pity
3 years old for road dey beg money,
highway no be for small pikin

For long we go pray make e better
How many times we fo pray make e better
Since mama born me my people dey pray make e better
Offer and tithe, everyday them dey pay, say make e better

With another great music year coming to an end, the people of Notjustok have compiled the 15 best Nigerian albums and EP to wrap up 2022.

When music observers and lovers that pay close watch to the growth of Nigerian music look back at 2022, it will be described as the year where the gates of international progression were significantly flung wider apart, with Afrobeats acts and their records notching wins and making statements greater than even some of their international counterparts. However, beyond the year of seismic smash hits and viral Tiktok challenges tucked under the Nigerian music industry's belt, the power strides of the scene were backed locally by top-notch albums and EPs. With this in mind, the Notjustok staff community came together to rank the 15 best albums and EPs of the year judging by sonic and thematic quality, thematic diversity, cohesion, replay value and resonance.

Here are the 15 best Nigerian albums and EPs of 2022:

15. Riddim 5 EP- Fave

Going against the typically unspoken calendar of the music scene which tends to spot minimal activity till the end of the first quarter of the year, Fave put out her debut project on the 20th of January. Despite her smash hit "Baby Riddim" already bringing in the ringer, Fave had not rested on her oars, delivering a 5-track EP that was not only soothing and hypnotic with songs like "Obsessed" but featured a refreshingly different perspective on what it is for a woman to navigate love in these times and climes-- "Mr Man".

With these factors and notwithstanding its early release, the gravelly-voiced singer was also able to withstand recency bias to notch the 15th spot on our list of best projects of the year with her Riddim 5 EP.

14. More Love Less Ego- Wizkid

Over time, Wizkid has earned him a near-endless list of praise epithets and has despite the seemingly polarising reviews of his More Love, Less Ego album, been able to with it, maintain these adulations as one of the greatest singers of his Nigerian generation.

Released on the 11th of November-- a few days after the second anniversary of what some consider to be the piece de resistance of his discography-- Made In Lagos, Wizkid's 5th studio album had as expected featured star-studded features with a selection flung far and wide, spanning countries and generations to consist of Jamaican Shenseea, Nigerian Gen-Z popstar, Ayra Starr, American rapper, Don Toliver, British-Nigerian Skepta among others. However, what no one had seen coming had been Wizkid's application of his musical skills, going solo on 9 of 13 tracks with themes of love and affluence in hand to offer a versatile and heady sprawl from "2 Sugar", to "Slip N Slide", "Pressure" and "Frames (Who's Gonna Know)", which especially saw the singer sing like never before.

13. Ethos- AQ & Brymo

If the general consensus is that Nigerian hip-hop is dead, the underlying reality remains that it's not from a lack of trying on the rappers' parts and Ethos by A-Q and Brymo is prime example.

ETHOS Album Cover

On the 10-track album, a relatively novel and mellifluous fusion of hip-hop and alternative sounds is brought to life with musings on love, life, socio-political issues, and family with A-Q expertly receiving the baton of Brymo's rousing vocals with equally-charged and poignant bars to deliver a resounding body of work.

12. Bad Since '97- BNXN Fka Buju

In a pool of talented singers, BNXN's cadence cuts across differently with the bounce, flow and panache of a rapper backed by melodies that either dunk you in your feels or lift you off your feet. This and more are evident on his Bad Since '97 EP.

BAD SINCE '97 Album Cover

A 7-track sophomore affair, the project sees the singer defy the concept of a sophomore slump to attain new levels of his artistry while holding his own beside OGs like Wande Coal on Kenkele, Wizkid on Many Ways and Olamide on Modupe. In fact, for most listeners and lovers of the singer's output, their critique remains that BNXN should have extended the extended play (EP), to instead deliver an album.

11. Ololade Asake- Asake

Years from now, while music observers go over the global growth of Afrobeats, Asake's (re)emergence will be noted for two things; firstly as one of the most groundbreaking debuts and secondly, as a turning point in the trajectory of Street-Hop.

Bound spectacularly with Neo-Fuji inflections and themes of hope, prayer, amid self-assuredness, Asake's "Ololade Asake" was the rebirth of Mr Money over a 4-track EP which despite its partly mid-tempo feel, couched itself in our subconscious, playlists and on top of the charts, lording it over even the fast-paced songs the Nigerian music-loving populace was used to.

10. V- Asa

When you've made a name for yourself in an industry for close to two decades, no one holds you to the respectability politics of earning it. Rather, it is given, alongside with a hall-pass on being topical or switching up. But Asa has never played by the status quo and 15 years in the game, she sounds this off with her fifth album, V.

Asa

A mature yet modern blend of RnB, Afrobeats and the unimitable essence of the enigma that is Bukola Elemide, V features 10 tracks and three deftly utilised features-- Wizkid, The Cavemen and Amaarae, to produce an Asa album like no other, packed with an unquestionable resonance no one expected the music veteran to come with.

9. Palmwine Music 3- Show Dem Camp

A dictionary search of "Palmwine Music" may turn up empty but the exercise itself would prove unnecessary as even a cursory listen of their Palmwine Music 3 album would provide all the insight needed to understand the concept of the sound.

Palmwine Music 3

Set with a palpable summer-by-the beach feel, the Show Dem Camp duo, Ghost and Tec partner with a list of artistes-- BOJ, Tems, Tay Iwar, LadiPoe who have become much like alumni with a number of collabs under their belt. Yet, regardless of the fact it serves as the third iteration of Palmwine Music, they're able to pull off a project centred on themes of love, fidelity or the lack thereof that not only doesn't feel unrepetitive, but sounds fresh and balmy.

8. Outlaw EP- Victony

Not many artistes possess the versatility Anthony Ebuka Victor comes with, and it can even be said that he's with his artistry, put the "V" in versatile. A rapper turned singer, Victony cemented his full-blown emergence on the music scene with his second EP, Outlaw.

Interestingly, while the singer's output on the EP had been a solo run, tapping only producers Tempoe and Ktizo, the singer had delivered a robust project with themes that reflect on the state of the country and mental health as well as the interrelation between love and money.

7. Rave & Roses- Rema

Rema has always cut across the scene as a maverick, with non-conformist sonics and lyrical application like never seen before and so for his debut album, Raves & Roses, the new-gen star had stuck to his guns, presenting two sides of his musicality; Rema the lover boy and Rema the Raver.

Rema Rave and Roses album

Sprinkled with international collabs from Americans, 6lack and Chris Brown to British AJ Tracey and French Yseult, Rave & Roses is a double-sided affair with party tracks and love songs as well as a resounding one with social commentary that well illustrates Rema's artistry manifesto.

6. Young Preacher- Blaqbonez

Not many people are aware of it, but beyond the albums and projects displayed on music streaming platforms under Blaqbonez's name, there exists an even more extensive list under the rapper's discography. First a battle rapper and now evolved into a rapper and a singer, Blaqbonez displays a winning quality in line with the Bruce Lee "Be water" quote, taking care to move with the times while retaining his essence.

Featuring brilliant samples and well-utilised features, Blaqbonez had shown his range on his 13-track Young Preacher album, holding space as a rapper and singer, a skeptic of love, a heartbreaker and a financial advisor.

5. Some Nights I Dream Of Doors- Obongjayar

"Iridescent, empowering", these are some words that come to mind in association with Obongjayar's, Some Nights I Dream Of Doors, an album so diverse and alternative in its composition, it feels near revolutionary.

Best Nigerian Album of 2022 Obongjayar
Some Nights I Dream Of Doors cover art

But while this isn't Obongjayar's first rodeo, coming as his second album after his Nigeria-aligned debut with the Sarz collab on Sweetness EP, the singer shows he is able to stand on his own, despite going against the grains of convention with his fusion of Alternative Rock, RnB and Afrobeats-- "Message In A Hammer". A juxtaposition of airyness and a battle-ready feel, on this album, Obongjayar sings about the ills of the governance, while endlessly encouraging us to shoot for the stars and aim for the moon.

4. Love Is Not Enough Vol 2- Young Jonn

In the history of Afrobeats, only 3 producers have successfully transitioned from powering hits with their production skills as well as being hit-makers. Presently, it can be argued that none has ventured this journey with as much impact as Young Jonn.

Love Is Not Enough Vol.2 Album Cover

Making a debut with his Love Is Not Enough EP, the wicked producer had proved himself to be a wicked hitmaker with "Dada" and "Normally", eventually doubling his efforts to give even wickeder hits on Love Is Not Enough Vol. 2.

3. Love Damini- Burna Boy

His 6th studio album off a remarkable career that's at least a decade long and has notched 6 Grammy nominations and 1 win, among an endless list of global achievements, Burna Boy has proved himself to have unlocked the key to getting nods from the Recording Academy.

Currently, while some music critics may not rate the album highly, the singer's output on the album has earned him two Grammy nominations for the forthcoming 65th edition while the lead single, "Last Last" continues to rake in groundbreaking wins the world over.

2. Mr Money With The Vibe- Asake

Last year, Ayra Starr had made a huge impression on the music scene and the Notjustok albums of the year list by sitting on two spots, this year, Asake takes the flowers with his Ololade Asake EP at number 11 and his debut album, Mr Money With The Vibe as the number 2 album of the year.

Best Nigerian Album of 2022 Mr money with the vibe

An embodiment of ease, supertstar flair and pizzazz, Asake had brought all these and the fervour of the streets to his debut album with neo-fuji inflections so rich, all songs off the album had found instant resonance on the streets, charts and even in the diaspora.

The top Nigerian album in 2022

1. Boy Alone- Omah Lay

Omah Lay's Boy Alone may not have held the charts by ransom but the cohesion of the album from it's title, to the cover art and central theme of loneliness and solitude ran through so well, it showed that perfection in art isn't quite entirely a myth or an unattainable peak.

Omah Lay Boy Alone Best Nigerian Album of 2022
Album Cover For 'Boy Alone' by Omah Lay

Set amid mid-tempo hues and poignant lines laid over complementary but vibrant instrumentalisation, Omah Lay's message was so clear on the album (from the haunting yet heady Soso, to the reflective I'm A Mess and sobering Purple Song,) that several months after, wherever music enthusiasts are gathered, it is sure to become a topic of discussion, with a few notes of concern on Omah Lay's state of mind. But if anything, the general concensus remains that out of pain, beauty is birthed and for Omah Lay, the angst and vulnerability channelled through the album has earned him the number spot on the Notjustok Nigerian album of the year list for 2022.

2022 was indeed capped with a long list of stellar Nigerian albums and EPs and here are some notable mentions for the year:

The sensational Joeboy is not faced with the notice that was allegedly sent to him by Asa's camp.

Joeboy & Asa

Nigerian ace singer and songwriter, Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, popularly known as Joeboy, has reacted to the copyright infringement notice that was sent to him by award-winning singer Asa.

Joeboy, on August 19, 2022, released the second single of the year, an afro-fusion tune titled "Contour," which was produced by ace beat maker Tempoe.

A few weeks after the release of the song, Joeboy was allegedly served a notice which claimed that the song "Contour" infringed on the copyright of Asa. According to the letter, "Contour" infringed on the copyright of a musical composition which was created by Asa in a recording session which took place on September 22nd, 2022, with Tempoe in attendance at that said session.

The notice, which was served on September 30th, demanded that Joeboy remove the song from all digital platforms within twenty-four hours, issue a written apology, pay N300 million, and assign Asa a sixty-percent publishing split.
