There’s a common misconception around sampling in Afrobeats that needs clarification.

Over the years, artists have often drawn inspiration from other musicians' works—whether old or new—to create fresh tracks, and Afrobeats as a genre wholeheartedly embraces this culture.

Interestingly, musical inspiration can come from a range of sources beyond just other songs. Movie scenes, motivational quotes, and even snippets of conversation can all spark new musical ideas, and vice-versa. Sampling has become the most popular term associated with this practice, though it’s often mistaken for interpolation due to their similarities.

To clarify: a sample involves directly using a snippet of an original recording in a new track. Meanwhile, an interpolation is a recreation of a song’s melody or composition, played note-for-note, without using the original audio.

For example, if you performed the melody from 2Baba’s “African Queen” in your own song, that would be an interpolation. But if you included an unedited loop from the original recording, that would be a sample.

For context, the Rema song below is a sample, where he brilliantly incorporated the 1985 jazz hit ‘Is It a Crime’ by Nigerian-British soul singer Sade Adu.

On September 12, 2023, the Nigerian music industry was struck with grief following the untimely death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The former Marlian Music signee, who was only 27 years old, left behind a legacy of hit songs, but his death also brought with it a wave of chaos, confusion, and unanswered questions. One year later, the pain of his sudden demise continues to reverberate through his family, fans, and the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Mohbad’s widow reflects on the pain of his loss

Firstly, Wunmi, Mohbad’s widow, marked the one-year anniversary of his death with a heartfelt post on her Instagram account. She shared emotional memories of their time together, posting an old photo and video of the couple and a recent video of their son, Liam. In her lengthy message, Wunmi expressed the unbearable pain of losing her husband and the struggles she has faced over the past year.

“It’s been a year today—a year since you left me and our Liam in this cold world. It’s been so hard. I miss you so much. Liam misses you too. I wish you were here to see him; you would have been an incredible father,” Wunmi wrote. She also vowed to raise their son in a way that would make Mohbad proud, adding, “I still don’t know how I’ve survived without you.”

Her post not only highlighted the deep sorrow of her loss but also reflected on the ways Mohbad’s death has shaped her life. She concluded by praying for her late husband’s soul, asking God to forgive his shortcomings and accept him into heaven.

Fans honor Mohbad with acts of charity

Secondly, Mohbad’s one year remembrance was not only marked by his immediate family but also by his fans, who continue to hold his memory dear. In a heartwarming gesture, one of his fans took to the streets of Lagos to distribute food to the less fortunate in his honor.

In a video shared on social media, a woman cooked a large pot of rice and distributed it to beggars and homeless people, bringing smiles to the faces of those in need. The fan, who posted the video under the Instagram handle @Temilolasobola, accompanied it with a prayer: “Dear God, I commit ILERIOLUWA unto your hands. Bless his soul, forgive him his sins, grant him eternal rest and peace.”

This act of kindness was a touching tribute to the late singer, reflecting how deeply his music and legacy impacted those around him.

Celebrities pay tribute to Mohbad’s legacy

Additionally, several figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry also took the time to commemorate Mohbad’s one-year remembrance. One notable tribute came from popular skit maker Cute Abiola, who shared an emotional video of Mohbad expressing gratitude to God while at a church service. In his Instagram post, Cute Abiola wrote, “A year ago, rest on, legend,” in honor of the late singer.

The video highlighted Mohbad’s humility and faith, showing a side of him that many fans may not have known. It served as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted individual behind the star’s public persona, someone who faced struggles and gave thanks even during challenging times.

Mohbad’s father speaks out against exploitation

Also, as the one-year remembrance approached, Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, voiced his frustration with individuals attempting to capitalize on his son’s death. During a court hearing held on September 11, 2024, Mr. Joseph expressed anger toward those trying to profit from the tragic anniversary. He emphasized that the focus should remain on justice, not exploitation.

In a video shared with reporters, he said, “This is the time to remember that it has been one year, and we still haven’t gotten justice.” Mr. Aloba's comments reflected the ongoing pain and frustration of the family, who are yet to find closure or answers regarding the true cause of Mohbad’s death.

The lingering mystery surrounding Mohbad’s death

Despite a thorough investigation, including an autopsy and multiple court hearings, the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death remain unresolved. His passing under questionable circumstances, with reports of harassment and disputes with his former record label, left fans and family members demanding justice.

Also, at the time of his death, Mohbad was entangled in legal battles. This was over unpaid royalties and other disputes with his former label, Marlian Music. This label was founded by Nigerian singer Naira Marley. After his passing, videos surfaced online showing Mohbad being physically assaulted. This added to the speculation that foul play may have been involved.

A reflection on life lessons learned

Meanwhile, Nollywood actress Opeyemi Aiyeola also shared her thoughts on Mohbad’s one-year remembrance. In a reflective post on her Instastories, the actress emphasized key lessons learned from the tragedy. She particularly mentioned the risks of sacrificing oneself for wealth and the inevitable betrayal that can follow.

“Human survival instincts is no respecter of blood, love, loyalty or friendship,” she wrote. Aiyeola highlighted the dangers of becoming a “sacrificial lamb” for others. She stressed that Mohbad’s death serves as a cautionary tale about the lengths some will go for wealth and influence.

Conclusion: A legacy remembered, but justice still sought

Conclusively, one year after his death, Mohbad’s legacy endures through his music, his family, and the fans who continue to honor his memory. However, the unanswered questions surrounding his passing remain a source of pain for those closest to him. While his widow, Wunmi, and their son, Liam, continue to mourn the loss of a husband and father, the demand for justice persists.

Lastly, as the Nigerian music community reflects on the life and talent of Mohbad, his family and fans hold out hope that one day, the truth will come to light, and those responsible will be held accountable. For now, Mohbad’s memory lives on, and his impact on the Nigerian music industry remains indelible.

The family of late musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has conducted a new autopsy to determine the cause of his death.

The move comes after a previous autopsy failed to reveal the circumstances surrounding his passing.

On June 26, 2024, Magistrate T.A. Shotobi of the Coroner Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, granted an order allowing Mohbad's father, Joseph Aloba, to arrange for an independent autopsy by a licensed pathologist. Also, the court mandated that Aloba cover all expenses related to the examination.

Furthermore, according to a statement released by Monisola Odumosu, a member of the family's legal team, the second autopsy took place on July 19 and 20. "The second autopsy as requested by the Aloba family and ordered by the Magistrate of the Coroner Court, Ms. T.A. Shotobi, was conducted on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20, 2024. This autopsy is a two-part exercise, with the first part now completed."

Additionally, Odumosu said that if the initial autopsy does not reveal the cause of Mohbad's death, the family will conduct further tests. "If the cause of death cannot be determined from this initial examination, the second part will proceed, involving a toxicology and histology test on the necessary samples already obtained."

However, the legal team revealed that Mohbad's father, along with two independent pathologists chosen by him and Mohbad's wife, Wunmi, witnessed the procedure. "This comprehensive procedure, conducted last Friday, was witnessed only by Mr. Joseph Aloba, the forensic pathologist appointed by Mr. Joseph Aloba and his team, legal representatives of both Mr. Joseph Aloba and a pathologist appointed by Wunmi Aloba to observe the procedure."

Meanwhile, Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. So, this sparked heated debates on social media about the circumstances of his death. Also, his body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an initial autopsy. However, a pathologist testified at the Coroner's Court on May 15 that the cause of death could not be determined. This is due to the state of decomposition.

Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti has openly criticized Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, accusing her of politicizing the tragic death of music artist, Mohbad.

This is amid the ongoing dispute between actress, Iyabo Ojo and self-proclaimed activist,VeryDarkMan.

Following a call-out by the actress on Sunday, June 30, 2024, Kuti took to Instagram livestream to share his views on the controversy. Meanwhile, he accused Ojo of leveraging Mohbad's death to further an agenda against singer Naira Marley.

"I don't do personal things because I can't stand it," Kuti stated. "You people politicized Mohbad's death. I don't believe that you politicized his death because you were trying to find justice for him. I believe that it's just a movement against Naira Marley at the end of the day. Nobody can tell me otherwise, or anything other than that."

Additionally, Seun Kuti questioned the validity of government findings regarding Mohbad's cause of death, highlighting conflicting reports. "Do you accept the government's findings? I still found a report that stated that his cause of death was substance abuse. If you believe the government's findings, then what are we doing here?" he asked Ojo.

Also, he added, "Now, where is the 'Justice for Mohbad' movement? Where is that energy that you people used then? Because I feel that if you can use that energy against Naira Marley, you can use your influence to quench bad things in our society. But you people have an agenda!"

Lastly, Kuti's comments have further fueled the ongoing debate surrounding Mohbad's death and the motivations behind the calls for justice.
