During her acceptance speech for Best Afrobeats Act, Tyla appeared on stage with her sister Sydney Seethal, expressing gratitude to Afrobeats for paving the way for African music globally. She said

"I want to thank my team. I want to thank my family, the Tygers, for voting for me. Thank you to God, obviously. Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music"

Many consider Tyla’s acknowledgment of Afrobeats a response to the backlash from her 2024 VMAs acceptance speech, where she stirred controversy by identifying with her home genre, Amapiano, despite winning in an Afrobeats category. This latest gesture appears to be a nod to the genre’s undeniable role in elevating African music worldwide.

The heavyweight OAP is of the opinion that Tyla shouldn't have received the award.

Popular Nigerian on-air personality and host, Oladotun Ojuolape Kayode, better known as Do2dtun, didn't mince words when reacting to South African singer Tyla's controversial VMAs acceptance speech.

Tyla, who won the Best Afrobeats category at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, stirred reactions by distancing herself from the Afrobeats genre. During her speech, she emphasised that African music extends beyond Afrobeats and highlighted her identity as an Amapiano artiste, a genre rooted in South Africa.

Do2dtun took to social media to express his displeasure, questioning why Tyla accepted the award if she didn’t identify with the genre. He argued that she should have either rejected the nomination or the award itself. Do2dtun further criticised her for undermining Afrobeats during a global moment that should have celebrated the genre’s success. The debate has since sparked wider discussions about the representation and categorisation of African music on the international stage.

The debate has since sparked wider discussions about the representation and categorisation of African music on the international stage, as many opine that the song 'Water' that Tyla used to win the award indeed is an Afrobeats song. He wrote:

"Aunty @tyla aka am not Afrobeats, I am Amapiano. We have heard you but your song “Water” isn’t amapiano either. If you thought you were categorized in a wrong category, you should have given the award back or denounced the nomination. You clearly took an award that didn’t represent you or your sound from that statement you made".

He expressed frustration at what he saw as a distortion of African music genres, particularly with the global labelling of various African sounds under the Afrobeats umbrella.

MTV Base's recent announcement of Tyla as the Best Afrobeats artiste of 2024 at the MTV Video Music Awards has sparked a heated debate on Nigerian social media.

The South African singer's song Water edged out top Nigerian artists like Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Tems, Wizkid and Davido to claim the top spot.

Meanwhile, in a surprising turn of events, Tyla took to the stage to accept her award and promptly corrected the show organizers. She clarified that she is a South African singer and not an Afrobeats artiste. Instead, she identifies with the Amapiano genre, a distinct South African sound.

Additionally, in a gracious move, Tyla acknowledged the Nigerian artists she surpassed to win the award. She gave a shoutout to Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Tems, Lojay, and Pheelz. However, this is not the first time Tyla has beaten Nigerian artistes to an award. She previously won the Best African Music Performance of 2024 at the Grammys.

Tyla's win and acceptance speech have ignited a conversation about genre classification and the representation of African music globally. While some celebrate her victory, others question the criteria used to select the Best Afrobeats artist. Lastly, the debate is sure to continue, with many eagerly awaiting the next development in this story.

Spinall, Omah Lay & Tyla - One Call Lyrics

Intro: Omah Lay
Woah, woah, woah, woah-oh
DJ Spinall
Woah, woah, woah, woah-oh
P!

Verse 1: Omah Lay
I'm on my way to you, time is on the loose
I will always fight for truth, if i have the chance to choose (Here we go)
Like every other superhero, my weakness is love
I don’t do it for the medals, 'cause no me without us
Peace stands for the people, so I'll be on my way
Whenever you think you need to (One, two, three)

Chorus: Omah Lay
I’ll be one call away, one call away, one call away, one call away (Ladies)
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you

Verse 2: Tyla
You know I'm never too far for you
And the world can wait, if I'm waiting on you
So, don't leave me waiting long, you know that I got love
Whenever you need time, just call my-
’Cause the miles ain’t nothing but a number (Number)
They can't take nothing from us (From us)
But we always got each other (Always got each other)
If I’m on your mind, just know that I'm one call away (One, two, three)

Chorus: Omah Lay & Tyla
Away, away
One call away
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
One call away
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
I’ll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
One call away
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you
I'll be one call, one call, one call, one call away from you

This year's BET Awards proved to be a night of victory for South African singer Tyla.

Taking the stage for the first time at the prestigious ceremony, she delivered a high-energy performance of her hit song Jump from her self-titled debut album.

Tyla wasn't alone on stage. Joined by featured artists Gunna and Skillibeng, she captivated the audience with a dynamic and visually striking set. The performance began with Tyla descending into a cage, an element that added a touch of drama and intrigue. The energy then soared as she launched into Jump, surrounded by dancers who brought the song's vibrant energy to life.

But the true highlight was Tyla herself. Owning the stage with confidence, she showcased her signature twerk move under towering dancers on stilts. The combination of powerful vocals, dynamic choreography, and a touch of South African flair left the audience wanting more.

This electrifying performance marks a significant milestone for Tyla's burgeoning career.

At the 2024 BET Awards held at Los Angeles's Peacock Theater on June 30, Nigerian artists experienced a night of mixed fortunes, with only Tems securing a win amidst strong competition.

So, at the 2024 BET Awards, Tems clinched the Best Gospel/Inspiration Song award for her single Me & U, marking a solitary victory for the Nigerian contingent.

Meanwhile, Burna Boy, a frontrunner in multiple categories, faced disappointment as he lost the BET awards 2024. So, he lost the awards for Best Hip Hop and Best R&B/Pop act to Kendrick Lamar and Usher, respectively. Similarly, rising star Ayra Starr was unable to secure any wins despite nominations, notably missing out on the Best New Artist award, which was claimed by Tyla. Although, Tyla also triumphed over Ayra Starr and Asake to clinch the Best International Act award.

Also, Seyi Vibez, making his debut BET nomination for Best New International Act, was edged out by South Africa's Makhadzi. Additionally, this narrowed the chances for Nigerian representation at the prestigious awards.

South African singer, Tyla has issued a statement addressing her race (ethnicity).

Meanwhile, this comes after a controversial moment during her interview on The Breakfast Club.

Previously, the Grammy Award-winning artist was accused of not embracing her Black heritage after refusing to comment on her race.

Furthermore, in her statement, Tyla explained that she identifies as Coloured in South Africa and as a Black woman in other parts of the world, acknowledging the different classifications of race globally. Also, she emphasized that she understands the weight of the term "Coloured" outside of South Africa and accepts both identities.

Consequently, Tyla's statement aims to put the controversy to rest, stating, "I'm both Coloured in South Africa and a Black woman."
