Renowned actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele has revealed that veteran singer, D'banj played a significant role in encouraging her to continue the popular Jenifa brand.

Speaking at D'banj's 20th-anniversary celebration in the entertainment industry on Friday, June 7, 2024, Akindele shared how their chance meeting at a club led to D'banj's support and guidance.

D'banj's enthusiasm for the Jenifa brand and his advice to milk its potential inspired Akindele to create more sequels, including The Return of Jenifa. He even gifted her money to support the project. Akindele expressed her gratitude, hailing D'banj as a movement and a legacy that will endure.

In her words, “After the big break with Jenifa, everybody loved Jenifa so much, I was out there and everyone was celebrating me so much. I was invited to a club where I met Dbanj for the first time and he gave me his number and inquired if there is a sequence to Jenifa, I told him No and he questioned why as he noted how Jenifa is a brand I can feast on for the rest of my life.

She continued, “He told me that when I have a brand, you feed on the brand, you milk the brand very well and make money out of it. Out of his pocket, he gave me money and said I should go write another Jenifa and he supports me with the money”.

“Dbanj you’re more than just a musician, you’re a movement! Your music has brought joy to our hearts, and your legacy will live on forever,” She added.

Funke Akindele also shared on her twitter account that:

Dear Lagosians, I must share my decision to venture into a more significant facet of humanitarian service with you all.Through God's grace, my 25-year career in the entertainment sector has seen much success and given me the privilege to engage with people from all walks of life.

It was also within that period, that my passion for contributing to the growth of youth, women and children was solidified. Coupled with an upbringing dedicated to service to others and value for life, compassion for others is second nature to me.

As a Lagosian born out of Ikorodu, when asked to join Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran (JANDOR) as his running mate for next year’s gubernatorial elections– the opportunity to help liberate and improve the welfare of our people could not be ignored.
