Nigerian rapper Falz has addressed allegations made by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, aka Verydarkman, regarding his involvement in Bobrisky's jail term.

In an interview on the Afrobeat podcast with Adesope, Falz denied the claims, stating that VDM "set up a ring light and said nonsense" about him and his family.

Also, Falz explained that he couldn't ignore the allegations, prompting him to take legal action against Verydarkman. "You can't just sit back and watch someone spew falsehoods about you," he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the rapper revealed that he contacted music industry veteran Seun Kuti, who may have intervened. This led to a phone call from Verydarkman. However, Falz stated that Verydarkman continued to make baseless claims during the call.

Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has set the record straight on why he chose to study law, contrary to public perception.

In an interview with Chude Jideonwo on the With Chude podcast, Falz explained that his decision to study law was inspired by his father, Femi Falana's, impactful work as a human rights lawyer.

Growing up, Falz witnessed firsthand the positive impact his father had on people's lives, which sparked his own desire to emulate him. "Everyone had a story about how my dad came to their aid… At that point, I wasn't pressured; I aspired to emulate what he was doing," Falz said.

Meanwhile, Falz revealed that he practiced law briefly, working at the Ministry of Justice during his youth service and later at his father's firm, but eventually pursued music full-time.

"I did practice law for a short period… Very short, almost two years," he shared, laughing.

Lastly, Falz's clarification sheds light on his genuine interest in law and his father's inspiring legacy.

Nigerian singer Portable has reached out to embattled crossdresser Bobrisky, advising him to seek divine forgiveness and redemption amid suicidal thoughts.

Bobrisky recently revealed his struggles with depression and suicidal ideation following allegations of bribing EFCC officers with N15 million. The controversy began with a leaked audio detailing his jail experience and claims of Falz offering to secure a presidential pardon through his father, Femi Falana.

However, Portable responded to Bobrisky's distress call, emphasizing the importance of seeking forgiveness and repentance.

"Life is risky... God doesn't want sinners to die. Tell him to repent. If you die as a sinner, you're going to hell. Beg God to forgive you," Portable urged.

Furthermore, he encouraged Bobrisky to seek redemption, stating, "All he needs is to ask God for forgiveness of sin. What Bobrisky is facing now, if he repents, he will enjoy the world."

Portable's plea comes as a call to action for Bobrisky to reevaluate his lifestyle and seek spiritual guidance.

Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has come to the defense of human rights lawyer Femi Falana, dismissing allegations made against him in a leaked phone call involving crossdresser Bobrisky.

The audio, leaked by online critic Vincent Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan) with Seun Kuti's approval, claimed Falz and his father, Femi Falana, demanded N10 million from Bobrisky for a presidential pardon after his arrest.

So, Seun Kuti, who initially approved sharing the leaked call, clarified his stance on Instagram. He stated: "I know Uncle Femi very well... That part about Femi Falana is a scam."

Also, Kuti cited his personal experiences with Femi Falana, who reportedly represented him pro bono in three cases with Nigerian law enforcement.

"Uncle Femi Falana is so effing rich... If he believes someone is wrongfully convicted, he'll get them pardoned without asking for anything."

However, Seun Kuti expressed uncertainty about Falz's involvement, suggesting: "Maybe Falz fit talk to Bobrisky, take him papa dey brag... That's the only way, it doesn't reach Uncle Femi's side."

Lastly, the scandal has sparked controversy, with many questioning the authenticity of Bobrisky's claims.

The singer has issued a 24-hour withdrawal and retraction order to Verydarkman.

Nigerian ace rapper Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has given socialite Verydarkman 24 hours to retract his statement regarding the rapper and his father’s alleged involvement in a money laundering case.

Recall that on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, social media figure Verydarkman shared an explosive audio clip implicating Falz in a controversial situation. In the recording, socialite Bobrisky accused a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and his son of helping him evade charges—a situation Verydarkman alleged involved Falz and his father, the prominent SAN Femi Falana, in securing Bobrisky’s legal backing.

The audio also claimed that certain EFCC officers demanded ₦15 million from Bobrisky to drop the money laundering charges. Bobrisky admitted to paying the bribe, revealing that, rather than serving time in prison for naira abuse, he was detained in a private apartment.

Renowned Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has entered the fray surrounding crossdresser Bobrisky's allegations against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

During a recent Instagram Live session, Kuti disclosed that social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) initially shared an audio recording with him, which implicated Bobrisky in a money laundering case. The recording allegedly revealed that the EFCC accepted a N15 million bribe to drop the charges.

In the audio, Bobrisky claimed he did not serve his jail term and mentioned rapper Falz and his father, human rights lawyer Femi Falana.

Meanwhile, Kuti stated that he encouraged VDM to expose Bobrisky and the EFCC after reviewing the evidence. The musician, who has experienced his own share of run-ins with the law, highlighted the disparity in treatment.

Also, he questioned why Bobrisky received preferential treatment. "I served my jail term, so why was Bobrisky freed?" Kuti asked.

However, Seun Kuti's involvement adds another layer to the controversy surrounding Bobrisky's allegations against the EFCC. The case has sparked widespread debate about corruption and unequal treatment within Nigeria's justice system.

The morally conscious rapper is currently in the spotlight following a leaked audio recording.

Nigerian ace rapper Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has come under fire after being linked to a money laundering case involving socialite Bobrisky in a leaked audio.

Recall that In April 2024, Bobrisky was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for defacing the Naira after publicly spraying and displaying large amounts of new currency at the premiere of the film Beasts of Two Worlds on March 24, 2024. After pleading guilty to the charges, he was sentenced to four months in prison, and later stated that he served the entire sentence.

In an update of event, Falz, a rapper, lawyer and activist renowned for his socially conscious music and outspoken personality, found himself embroiled in controversy on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, after social media figure VeryDarkMan shared an explosive audio clip. In the recording, Bobrisky alleged that certain EFCC officers had demanded ₦15 million to drop money laundering charges against him. He admitted to paying the bribe, revealing that, instead of serving time in prison for naira abuse, he was detained in a private apartment.

Making matters worse, Bobrisky also implicated a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and his son, claiming they had helped him evade the charges. VeryDarkMan further alleged that Falz and his father, the prominent SAN Femi Falana, were involved in securing Bobrisky’s legal backing.

As the audio continued to spread, EFCC’s head of media, Dele Oyewale, announced that the Commission’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, had ordered an investigation into the allegations. This revelation turned Falz into a trending topic on X and other social media platforms, sparking widespread public reaction.

Nasboi, 2Baba & Falz - Ashewo Lyrics

All the pain I'm feeling, I love it
I don't ever want to unfeel it, ehh
Eh wassup?

Everything wey dem yarn you, na cruise

Normally, I be playboy
But I don change
Capture my heart like a criminal
No let me fall, jowo hold me now
Give me your love oh Philomena

Oh oh, I don change oh
Cause you got me thinking of ways
Just to prove
There's nothing to prove
I am on my ten toes for you baby oh

So I say

Eha eha eha
Dem don dribble Maradona
Eha eha eha

Like play, like play
Dem don convert e gangster eh
Chineke me
Player don catch e feelings eh
I never ever feel the same again o
Ashewo don born again oh
One chance, I don enter
My medulla e don scatter
All the pain I'm feeling, I love it
I don't ever want to unfeel it, ehh

Ashewo boy don love oh
Eha eha eha
Dem don dribble Maradona
Eha eha eha
Emi 13 missed calls
Eha eha eha
Dem don dribble player oh

Ah
Look at the way she give me leg over (pe pe)
13 missed calls on her cellular (yepa)
One blow cause seven die
I dey jolly biggy body burst medullar
Little did I know that I am a gooner
Trap me for corner
Chop me for super
Go to VAR
Check it for contact
Counter attack me
Swear I for come back
Ah they warned me about Potiphar's wife

But I didn't remember the sermon that night
She serve am for me
Omo e come go hot
Me, I chop spaghetti and I loss focus
Orishirishi eran pelu octopus
And I dey skip verse 1

So I say

Afrobeats has emerged as a powerful vehicle for social commentary, with Nigerian artists using their songs to address pressing issues such as corruption, inequality, and bad governance.

In times of national protest, these songs become more than just entertainment; they serve as anthems for a generation demanding justice and a better future.

Here, we spotlight 17 Afrobeats songs about bad governance that capture the spirit of resistance, transforming music into a tool for social and political activism.

1. Mr. President – African China

Firstly, Mr. President by African China is a direct appeal to Nigerian leaders, calling for respectful and effective governance. Released in 2004, the song highlights the need for integrity and dignity in leadership, urging the president to “lead us well.” As the issues addressed in the song remain relevant in 2024, Mr. President continues to resonate as a call for accountable leadership and meaningful societal reform. African China’s bold lyrics and the song’s enduring message make it a powerful commentary on the state of governance in Nigeria.

2. Zombie – Fela Kuti

Secondly, a seminal work in the Afrobeat genre, Fela Kuti’s Zombie is a scathing indictment of the Nigerian military regime. Released in 1977, the track immediately resonated with the masses, serving as both a powerful anthem and social commentary. Also, Fela Kuti used his music as a weapon to expose the brutality and senselessness of the government’s actions, likening soldiers to mindless zombies. This song, along with others like Beast of No Nation and Ikoyi Mentality, solidified Fela as a revolutionary figure, inspiring generations of musicians and activists.

3. This Is Nigeria – Falz

Furthermore, Falz’s This Is Nigeria is a searing critique of the nation’s numerous challenges, inspired by Childish Gambino’s This Is America. The song and its accompanying video lay bare the pervasive corruption, police brutality, and socio-political issues that plague Nigeria. Also, through a mix of satire and provocative imagery, Falz fearlessly exposes the nation’s darkest truths, sparking essential conversations about the urgent need for change and accountability. This song has become a cultural touchstone, underlining its significance in Afrobeats music that tackles bad governance.

4. Jaga Jaga – Eedris AbdulKareem

However, Eedris AbdulKareem’s Jaga Jaga is a landmark protest song in Nigerian music, released in 2004. The track is a raw and uncompromising indictment of a nation grappling with systemic failures. The term Jaga Jaga refers to chaos and disorder, perfectly capturing the public’s disillusionment with the government. Eedris’ fearless delivery transformed Jaga Jaga into an anthem for the marginalized, sparking a national discourse on corruption and inequality. The song’s enduring relevance underscores its impact as a rallying cry for accountability and good governance.

5. Monsters You Made – Burna Boy

Meanwhile, Monsters You Made is a deeply personal track by Burna Boy, exploring themes of marginalization and injustice. The song features spoken word excerpts from African icons Fela Kuti and Ama Ata Aidoo, setting the stage for a powerful exploration of systemic racism. With a haunting chorus by Chris Martin, the song accuses power structures of creating "monsters" through oppression. This track serves as a powerful anthem that reclaims agency and challenges the narratives imposed by oppressors.

6. Barawo – Ajebo Hustlers

Additionally, Ajebo HustlersBarawo is a critical commentary on Nigeria’s issue of mob justice. The duo’s lyrics and melodies combine to create an anthem against extrajudicial killings and systemic corruption. The song’s title, meaning "thief," is used ironically to highlight the baseless accusations often leading to mob violence. Although, the refrain “This country na wa” captures the nation’s collective frustration, humanizing victims and demanding accountability. The remix featuring Davido amplified the track’s reach and message. This makes Barawo a cultural touchstone that continues to spark conversations about justice and societal change.

7. 20 10 20 – Burna Boy

Also, 20 10 20 is Burna Boy’s tribute to the victims of the Lekki Toll Gate massacre, where peaceful End SARS protesters were attacked by Nigerian security forces on October 20, 2020. The song is a chilling reminder of this tragic event, capturing the nation’s grief and outrage. Burna Boy’s lyrics serve as a powerful indictment of government brutality, turning the track into a rallying cry for justice. So, 20 10 20 is more than a song; it’s a touching documentation of a dark chapter in Nigeria’s history, reinforcing Burna Boy’s role as a voice for the marginalized.

8. Talk – Falz

Consequently, Falz’s Talk is a sharp critique of the Nigerian political landscape, featured on his 2019 album Moral Instruction. Known for his pop sensibilities and socially conscious lyrics, Falz uses Talk to address issues of corruption and bad governance. Though, the song’s satirical tone, coupled with the phrase “no be me talk am o” (I didn’t say it), allows Falz to make bold statements while evading censorship. Talk is more than just a song; it’s a call to action, urging listeners to demand better from their leaders.

9. 2010 – Sound Sultan featuring MI Abaga

Notwithstanding, Sound Sultan’s 2010 was a prophetic reminder that despite the promises of a better future, little had changed in Nigeria by 2010. The song reflects the disillusionment of a nation still waiting for the basic amenities and good governance that were supposed to materialize, showcasing the unfulfilled promises of the past.

10. Shey Na Like This? – Wande Coal

Notably, Wande Coal’s Shey Na Like This? captures the daily struggles and economic hardship faced by Nigerians due to bad governance. The song serves as a reminder that change won’t come by waiting; it requires active demand from the people.

11. Suruu Lere – Lagbaja

Lagbaja’s Suruu Lere addresses the persistent challenges of corruption, tribalism, and poverty that have hindered Nigeria’s progress. The song is a call to Nigerians to demand better from their leaders, as the nation continues to grapple with the same issues decades after independence.

12. Hard Life – Blackface

Furthermore, Blackface’s Hard Life speaks to the economic hardships and the desire of many Nigerians to leave the country. The song is a candid reflection of the struggles faced by the average Nigerian, making it a relatable anthem for those seeking better opportunities abroad.

13. Jailer – Asa

Also, Asa’s Jailer is a metaphorical exploration of the psychological, economic, social, and religious constraints faced by Nigerians. The song urges listeners to free themselves from the ideological and economic incarceration imposed by the political elite.

14. Oga Police – PSquare

However, PSquare’s Oga Police is a prelude to the End SARS movement, addressing issues of police brutality, bribery, and corruption. The song highlights the unfair treatment Nigerians endure at the hands of the police, making it a powerful statement against abuse of power.

15. Democracy – Fela Anikulapo Kuti

Lastly, in Democracy, Fela Kuti critiques the corruption that pervades Nigeria’s electoral process. The song reflects on how elections are often rigged and the disillusionment felt by Nigerians who feel their votes don’t count. Fela’s legacy continues through his children, who carry on his tradition of using music as a tool for social and political change.

These 15 songs are more than just music. They are powerful expressions of resistance, demanding accountability and justice. Also, they remind us that Afrobeats is not just a genre for entertainment but a platform for driving societal change.
