Nigerian international superstar Wizkid has finally released his much-anticipated sixth studio album, Morayo, a project brimming with emotion, sophistication, and usual style that has solidified his global acclaim. Released two years after his fifth album, More Love Less Ego, the new body of work is named in honour of his late mother, Jane Dolapo, as a tribute to her life and legacy.

With Morayo, Wizkid moves into themes that resonate deeply with his artistry — love, life, pleasure, opulence, and the joy of celebration. At the same time, the album exudes a sense of introspection and reverence, balancing party anthems with heartfelt tributes.

The 16-track album opens with Troubled Mind, a powerful intro featuring the vocals of the iconic Nigerian Fuji maestro K1 De Ultimate. The track sets a reflective tone, blending Wizkid's modern Afrobeats sound with the timeless depth of traditional Yoruba music.

True to his reputation for creating magnetic collaborations, Morayo boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists. YBNL star Asake lends his infectious energy, while American R&B sensation Brent Faiyaz brings a soulful touch. French rapper Tiakola adds a global edge, and Grammy-winning vocalist Jazmine Sullivan contributes her voice to elevate the album's emotional depth. Rising star Anais Cardot also graces the project, offering a fresh perspective that complements Wizkid's sound.

Each track on Morayo showcases Wizkid's mastery in weaving together diverse influences, reaffirming his status as a trailblazer in the Afrobeats scene. After the long wait, Morayo is a fitting milestone in the journey of an artist who continues to define the sound of his generation while paying homage to his roots and loved ones.

Rema's rise in the Afrobeats scene has been quick and filled with new ideas and Albums. Starting with his early EPs that mixed trap and Afropop, he has grown significantly as an artist. His first full album, Rave & Roses, showcased this evolution, and his latest album, HEIS (2024), continues this trend by blending traditional African music with modern electronic sounds and global influences.

Let’s take a look at Rema’s albums ranking worst to best:

7. Bad Commando EP (2019)

Best Tracks: Lady,  Bad Commando

Rema’s third EP, Bad Commando, is a fine example of his early experimentation with the emerging sound that would eventually make him a global sensation. While it's packed with hits and shows off his signature style, it falls a little flat compared to his more cohesive projects. The EP highlights Rema’s versatility but lacks the depth and consistency that his later releases would bring. Tracks like Lady and Bad Commando are undeniable bangers, but overall, the EP feels like a warm-up to the greatness that follows.

6. Freestyle EP (2019)

Best Tracks: Trap Out the Submarine, American Love

Released in 2019, Freestyle EP is a showcase of Rema’s trap roots. This project leans heavily into the rapper side of his persona, with moody, bass-heavy beats dominating the soundscape. While Rema’s vocals and flow are impressive, the EP lacks the Afrobeat influence that makes his music distinctive. Freestyle EP serves as an important stepping stone in his career, showing off his versatility as a trap artist, but it doesn't fully capture the unique blend of Afrobeats, trap, and pop that would come to define his later work.

5. Rema Compilation (2020)

Best Tracks: Dumebi, Iron Man, Beamer (Bad Boys)

The Rema Compilation is a collection of tracks from his first three EPs (Rema, Bad Commando, and Freestyle EP), marking his rise to stardom. This project plays more like a greatest hits album for an artist who had only just begun his journey, with hits like Dumebi and Iron Man gaining international traction. However, as a compilation, it lacks the singular vision of his studio albums. While the collection displays Rema’s infectious energy and charisma, it doesn’t offer the same narrative or musical depth that can be found in his full-length works.

4. Rema EP (2019)

Best Tracks: Dumebi, Iron Man

Rema's debut EP is where it all began. Released in March 2019, the self-titled project Rema introduced the world to his genre-blending style, with tracks like Dumebi and Iron Man immediately going viral. The EP marked Rema as an artist to watch, combining Afrobeats with elements of trap, pop, and dancehall. While it’s short and concise, the EP helped shape the trajectory of modern Afropop, making Rema a leading figure in the industry. Its only downside is its brief runtime, leaving listeners wanting more.

3. Rave & Roses (2022)

Best Tracks: Calm Down, Soundgasm, FYN

Rema’s highly anticipated debut album Rave & Roses is a masterclass in genre fusion, blending Afropop, trap, and R&B effortlessly. Released in 2022, it solidifies Rema as a global force in Afrobeats. The album delivers standout hits like Calm Down, which became a massive international success, and Soundgasm, a sensual track that showcases Rema’s ability to fuse Afrobeats with global rhythms. The production is sleek, the hooks are addictive, and the songwriting is elevated compared to his earlier releases. It’s a project that feels complete, with Rema balancing his dual personas as both a singer and a rapper. Rave & Roses is where Rema steps out fully as an artist with a distinct vision.

2. Rave & Roses (Ultra) (2023)

Best Tracks: Calm Down (Remix), Charm, Holiday, Dunno Me

Rave & Roses (Ultra) takes Rema’s debut to another level, adding six new tracks to an already outstanding project. This deluxe edition is not just a simple re-release; it expands upon the themes and musicality of the original, further cementing Rema's place as one of Afrobeats’ leading voices. Songs like Charm and Holiday introduce more sonic experimentation, while the remix of Calm Dow featuring Selena Gomez propelled the track to new heights, breaking international records and dominating global charts. The Ultra version of Rave & Roses feels like the most complete version of Rema's artistry to date, with the additional tracks offering both hit potential and introspection. The album showcases the full range of his talents, from Afropop to R&B and trap, making it his second most polished and compelling body of work.

1. HEIS (2024)

Best Tracks: HEIS, Benin Boys, Ozeba, March Am

Rema's sophomore album HEIS, released in 2024, marks a bold evolution in his career. Named after the Greek word for "Number 1," the project pushes Afrobeats boundaries while staying rooted in its origins. Rema blends 60s percussive elements inspired by Fela Kuti with modern influences like trap, EDM, and amapiano. Highlights include Benin Boys featuring Shallipopi, March Am, and Ozeba, which have gone viral since their release. Then, there is the iconic title track, which tells a story of Rema’s artistic choices. Ultimately, HEIS solidifies Rema’s Afro-Rave genre as a fully realized sound.

Rema’s discography, though relatively brief, is packed with hits and memorable moments that have shaped the landscape of modern Afrobeats. As he continues to experiment and evolve, it’s clear that his best work is likely still ahead of him. HEIS stands as his most definitive work to date, combining his early raw energy with his later, more refined artistry.

With multiple critically acclaimed albums, numerous international awards, and a Grammy win, Burna Boy’s discography reflects his artistic evolution. This article ranks his albums from worst to best, focusing on their lyrical content, production quality, cultural impact, and overall artistic growth.

Burna Boy, born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, has become one of the most influential voices in modern Afrobeats, transcending borders and genres. Known for his fusion of Afrobeat, reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop, Burna Boy has made significant contributions to the global rise of African music

Burna boy Album List and Rankings

8. On a Spaceship (2015)

Burna Boy’s sophomore album, On a Spaceship, is often seen as his least cohesive project. While it includes elements of reggae and dancehall, it lacks the thematic depth and polish that would define his later works. While songs like Jealousy and Rizzla are memorable, the album didn’t make a significant impact in establishing Burna Boy’s global presence.

  • Strengths: The blend of Afro-fusion with reggae and dancehall showcased his versatility.
  • Weaknesses: The production was uneven, and the album lacked a clear direction compared to his later work.

7. L.I.F.E – Leaving an Impact for Eternity (2013)

Burna Boy’s debut album L.I.F.E marked his official entry into the Nigerian music scene. With hit singles like Like to Party and Yawa Dey, the album introduced his Afro-fusion sound, combining reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeats. However, the production quality and overall refinement of his sound were still developing at this stage.

  • Strengths: Raw energy and an infectious Afrobeat-dancehall hybrid sound.
  • Weaknesses: Some tracks feel unpolished, with Burna Boy still exploring his musical identity.

6. Redemption (2016)

Redemption was a 7-track EP that showcased Burna Boy’s maturity and growing artistic confidence. This EP hinted at his future potential, with tracks like Pree Me resonating with fans. While it was a significant step forward from his debut, it was a brief project that left fans wanting more.

  • Strengths: Refined sound and introspective lyrics.
  • Weaknesses: Limited length and depth compared to full-length albums.

5. I Told Them… (2023)

Burna Boy’s latest album, I Told Them..., continues his evolution as an artist, blending Afrobeats with hip-hop, dancehall, and pop. The album is a bold declaration of his confidence and artistry, addressing his haters and showcasing his unique sound. Tracks like Cheat on Me (featuring Dave) and Big 7 highlight Burna Boy’s lyrical prowess and cross-cultural appeal. Then tracks like Giza and the title track went as fan favourites.

  • Strengths: Experimental sounds, strong collaborations, and personal themes.
  • Weaknesses: Some fans might find it less cohesive than African Giant or Twice as Tall.

4. Love, Damini (2022)

Love, Damini is Burna Boy’s most introspective album to date, reflecting on personal struggles, success, and fame. With a mix of energetic bangers and reflective tracks, it explores deeper themes of love, loss, and growth. Songs like Last Last became international hits, while tracks like For My Hand featuring Ed Sheeran appeal to a broader audience.

  • Strengths: Deeply personal lyrics and a diverse sound palette.
  • Weaknesses: Some tracks may be too experimental for casual listeners.

3. Outside (2018)

Outside was Burna Boy’s breakout album, marking his emergence as a global star. With international hits like Ye that resonated worldwide, the album helped him gain widespread recognition. The mix of Afrobeat, reggae, and dancehall showcased Burna Boy’s versatility, and Outside became the platform that launched him to new heights.

  • Strengths: Global appeal with tracks like Ye becoming an anthem.
  • Weaknesses: Some deeper cuts lack the punch of the standout singles.

2. Twice as Tall (2020)

Twice as Tall is Burna Boy’s Grammy-winning album and stands as a testament to his growth as an artist. Executive produced by Diddy, the album carries a global message, tackling themes of resilience, African pride, and social justice. With standout tracks like Way Too Big and Monsters You Made, Burna Boy successfully combined Afrobeats with global political commentary.

  • Strengths: Grammy-winning production, meaningful lyrics, and powerful collaborations.
  • Weaknesses: Some tracks feel overly polished, lacking the raw energy of African Giant.

1. African Giant (2019)

African Giant is widely regarded as Burna Boy’s magnum opus. This Grammy-nominated album is filled with rich political and cultural commentary, from addressing African identity to global issues. Songs like Anybody, Collateral Damage, and Dangote reflect Burna Boy’s growth as an artist willing to tackle societal problems while still creating infectious Afrobeat rhythms. African Giant cemented his place as one of the leaders in the Afrobeats movement.

  • Strengths: Bold lyrics, flawless production, and immense cultural significance.
  • Weaknesses: Some tracks may be a bit over-ambitious, but they add to the overall richness of the album.

Burna Boy’s discography reflects his incredible growth as an artist and his ability to transcend musical boundaries. From the raw energy of On a Spaceship to the polished and introspective nature of Love, Damini, each album has played a crucial role in shaping his career and cementing his place in the Afrobeats pantheon. And while albums like African Giant and Twice as Tall received widespread praise, fan favourites like Outside continue to hold special places in the hearts of many.

Ahead of Wizkid's seventh album, Morayo, we revisit his previously released albums.

African pop star Wizkid, now known to some as Big Wiz has come a long way in the African music scene; from his Holler at Your Boy days to recently making global sounds like the Tems-assisted Essence. Ayodeji Balogun is arguably one of the best of his generation. The journey didn't start today. It has been on for more than a decade. The Grammy nominee recently released his fifth album More Love, Less Ego.

6. Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition

  • Released: 2021
  • Label: Starboy Entertainment Ltd/RCA Records
  • Producers: P2J, Juls, Legendury Beatz, BlaqJerzee, London, Kill September, Saint Mino, Kevin Ekofo, P.Priime, Dre Pinckney, Akeel Henry,
  • Features: Tems, Burna Boy, Justin Bieber, Skepta, Damian Marley, H.E.R, Ella Mai, Tay Iwar, Projexx, Terri, BNXN fka Buju

In his bid to extend the viral status of Essence, Wizkid released a deluxe version of Made in Lagos. This version featured new input from Justin Bieber and BNXN with the prolific P-Prime delivering some sultry production on the album. While this album later fetched Wizkid his first solo Grammy nomination in the Global Music Album category, the deluxe album sounded more for promotional purposes than artistic growth. Eventually, Angelique Kidjo won the Grammy for his Mother Nature album.

5. Sounds From The Other Side

Image via Wikipedia
  • Released: 2017
  • Label: Starboy Entertainment Ltd/RCA Records
  • Producers: Sarz, Picard Brothers, Diplo, Dre Skull, Spellz, Del B, DJ Maphorisa, DJ Mustard, Twice As Nice
  • Features: Drake, Major Lazer, Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign, Bucie, Trey Songz

Few years after his exit from Banky W's record, Wizkid snapped up a deal with Sony Music and crafted a genre-blending album he called Sound From The Other Side. Unfortunately for him, the "other side" seemed not to have been ready for his sound, as the album failed to make much of a mark in the music industry. In addition to this, five out of the thirteen tracks were already released as lead singles, and only the Drake-assisted Come Closer was able to shine more on the album.

4. Ayo

Image via EME
  • Released: 2014
  • Label: Empire Mates Entertainment Ltd
  • Producers: Sarz, Shizzi, Uhuru, Spellz, Legendury Beatz, Del B, Dokta Frabz, Maleek Berry
  • Features: Femi Kuti, Seyi Shay, Akon, Banky W., Phyno, Yemi Sax, Shizzi, Wale, L.A.X

The sophomore slump is a battle every artist tries to resist, and only a few have been able to win the battle. Wizkid got the Sophomore bug on his second album, AYO (Joy) which is an eponymous title. The album marked his exit from EME. His first album Superstar was already pencilled down as a classic, and the pressure to replicate another classic militated against this album. This album was released during the period he and his label were involved in some tussle. This hindered his delivery, track selection, and lyrical abilities. And please, don't get me started on the bland album cover.

3. More Love, Less Ego

Image via Spotify
  • Released: 2022
  • Label: Starboy Entertainment Ltd/RCA Records
  • Producers: P2J, Kel-P, KDaGreat, Sammy Soso, P.Priime, Juls
  • Features: Femi Kuti, Seyi Shay, Akon, Banky W., Phyno, Yemi Sax, Shizzi, Wale, L.A.X

On his latest release, Wizkid sounds more mature and at ease with himself than ever before. A cross breeds between Afrobeats, Dancehall, Amapiano, and Neo-Soul. The features are sparse, as Wizkid solely sings on nine out of the thirteen tracks.

P2J produced eleven out of the track with P-Prime, Kel P, and Juls supported. While he tagged the album More Love, Less Ego, at the end of the 40-minute spin, you observe that Wizkid might have just meant More Sex, Less Ego.

2. Superstar

Image via Notjustok.com courtesy of EME
  • Released: 2011
  • Label: Empire Mates Entertainment Ltd
  • Producers: E Kelly, Masterkraft, Jay Sleek, Samklef, Shizzi, DJ Klem, Masterkraft, VeeDee, Q Beats,
  • Features: Banky W., Wande Coal, D'Prince

Wizkid's debut album soundtracked most millennial parties. A lot of the people who dance to this music are already married or have had their second kid. On this album, a star was born. Superstar was a formative introduction to Wizkid's artistry; with monetary backing from EME and sonic support from artists like Wande Coal, D'Prince, Skales, and more, Wizkid fully unleashed himself on the audience. More than ten years later, he shows no signs of stopping.

1. Made In Lagos

Image via Spotify
  • Released: 2020
  • Label: Starboy Entertainment Ltd/RCA Records
  • Producers: P2J, Juls, Legendury Beatz, BlaqJerzee, London, Kill September, Saint Mino, Kevin Ekofo
  • Features: Tems, Burna Boy, Skepta, Damian Marley, H.E.R, Ella Mai, Tay Iwar, Projexx, Terri

Released during the global pandemic, Made in Lagos became Wizkid's full-on passport to the world. Although Drake and Beyonce might have given him some credence globally via their respective collaborations, Made in Lagos sees Wizkid taking his sound to the world and on his terms alongside some featured artists. Although the title of the album remains contentious, the sound of the album makes this less of an issue as Wizkid doles out sounds for his Jamaican (Damian Marley, Projexx), United States (Ella Mai, H.E.R) and United Kingdom (Skepta) audience, while not forgetting the home front (Terri, Burna Boy, Tay Iwar, Tems)

Ace Nigerian rapper Phyno has unveiled his highly anticipated fifth studio album, Full Time Job, a project that reflects his journey as an artist seamlessly blending his native culture with global music influences. This 15-track album highlights Phyno’s unique ability to deliver an extraordinary fusion of singing and rapping, both in English and his native dialect, showcasing his versatility and artistry.

Full Time Job stands out as Phyno’s most dynamic body of work yet, featuring collaborations with some of the most exciting names in music, including Burna Boy, Fave, Chip, Aredee, Cheque, Flavour, NSG, and Johnny Drille. The album encapsulates Phyno's vision of exporting his culture through music while creating a sound that resonates across borders.

The album opens with the commanding "It’s Nothing," setting the stage for a journey through Phyno’s world — a world that balances confidence, introspection, and deep cultural pride. Standout tracks include "Back Outside" featuring Cheque, the energetic anthem "Eyes On Them" with Chip, and the buzzing single "Time Of My Life" featuring Arrdee. Phyno's ability to blend lyrical prowess with melodic undertones is evident in "Deep" featuring Fave, and the soulful "Sweet Karma" with Johnny Drille.

The album also features the previously released singles "DO I," both the original and remix featuring Burna Boy, which elevated the song to new heights, making it one of the biggest hits in the country. Tracks like "Men Don Show Face" featuring Flavour and "Pinterest" with NSG continue to push the boundaries of Phyno’s musical exploration, connecting Nigeria to the global stage.

With his effortless blend of singing and rapping, Phyno’s work transcends genre, offering a musical experience that crosses borders. Full Time Job reaffirms his place as one of Africa’s most influential artists, with a sound rooted in authenticity and a vision for global reach.

Phyno, born Chibuzo Nelson Azubike, is a Nigerian-born Rapper, Songwriter, and CEO of the Indigenous music imprint Penthauze Music. Influenced by rap icons like 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. and hometown heroes like Mr RAW and MC Loph, Phyno admired their raw, authentic delivery and aspired to bring that same energy to his music.

Phyno began his musical journey in 2010 when Nigerian rap music began flourishing. His first introduction to the Nigerian Mainstream came through the monstrous classic record ‘Anam Achi Kwanu’ where he was featured by the veteran rapper Illbliss. He has also collaborated with other industry heavyweights such as Naeto C, M.I Abaga, Flavour, Timaya and many others, setting the tone for his musical trajectory. Despite early scepticism from purists, Phyno’s blending of rap and Indigenous sounds was revolutionary, leading to the successful crossover of Indigenous rap into mainstream Nigerian music.

His breakthrough single, “Ghost Mode” featuring Olamide in 2012, cemented his position as one of the leading shapers of the modern Nigerian rap music culture. His debut album, 'No Guts, No Glory' (2014), fused brash, confident rap with more personal and communal themes, further establishing him as a formidable force in African music. Songs like “Fada Fada” and albums like 'The Playmaker' and 'Deal With It' further demonstrated his versatility, embracing both rap and Highlife influences.

With over a decade and counting in the game, Phyno now sets his gaze on global acclaim, seeking to even push more boundaries with his talent and ability to merge genres.
