]]>The post Afrobeats songs you thought were samples but are actually interpolations appeared first on NotjustOk.
]]>Over the years, artists have often drawn inspiration from other musicians' works—whether old or new—to create fresh tracks, and Afrobeats as a genre wholeheartedly embraces this culture.
Interestingly, musical inspiration can come from a range of sources beyond just other songs. Movie scenes, motivational quotes, and even snippets of conversation can all spark new musical ideas, and vice-versa. Sampling has become the most popular term associated with this practice, though it’s often mistaken for interpolation due to their similarities.
To clarify: a sample involves directly using a snippet of an original recording in a new track. Meanwhile, an interpolation is a recreation of a song’s melody or composition, played note-for-note, without using the original audio.
For example, if you performed the melody from 2Baba’s “African Queen” in your own song, that would be an interpolation. But if you included an unedited loop from the original recording, that would be a sample.
For context, the Rema song below is a sample, where he brilliantly incorporated the 1985 jazz hit ‘Is It a Crime’ by Nigerian-British soul singer Sade Adu.

Within just one week of tracking, from October 30 to November 3, 2020, the album entered the charts at number 10. To date, it has garnered over 371 million streams on Spotify.

'Made In Lagos' has spent a total of 102 weeks on the Billboard World album charts. The figure might not sound shocking, but Wizkid had actually tied a 27-year-old record held by the legend Cesaria Evora with her album titled 'Cesaria.'
It had been the longest-charting African Album for 27 years till Wizkid tied the record on Monday, February 14, 2022, and surpassed it in the week of the 28th of October, 2022.
Wizkid's 'Essence' featuring Tems off the 'Made In Lagos' album became the first Nigerian and African song to sell over a million copies in the USA. The RIAA certified the song Platinum on Monday, October 4, 2021.
Wizkid's 'Made In Lagos' is the only African album also to receive an RIAA certification after the album sold over 500,000 units in the US alone.
Wizkid's 'Essence' featuring Tems and Justin Bieber off the 'Made In Lagos' album became the highest-charting Nigerian song on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. This was an important feat because the Hot 100 chart is strictly for the USA. The record was later surpassed by Rema with his hit song Cal Down which peaked at number 3 on the chart.

]]>In a dramatic social media rant, the Essence hitmaker took shots at Davido, listing various ways he believes he is superior to his colleague. The cause of this latest conflict remains unclear, but the intensity of Wizkid's words has caught the attention of fans and the public.
In a heated post, Wizkid claimed that Davido pales in comparison to him on multiple fronts, including music, fashion, and wealth. Also, he accused Davido of being surrounded by what he described as "broke boys" who allegedly worship him, while commenting on how the wealthy have "weaponized poverty" in Nigeria.
Wizkid did not hold back as he wrote: “First off, you’re not as fly as me, can’t sing or make music like me, u can’t dress, u don’t make more money than me, u don’t even got hoes like me. Additionally, the Grammy-winning artist didn’t stop there. He mocked Davido’s popularity on social media: “Naija is a place the rich weaponize poverty so u carry all these broke boys in real life and get dem visa so they worship u and not tell u abt yourself. Meanwhile, Wizkid's verbal assault extended to Davido’s associates, including Nelson Epega, who was quick to respond. Epega urged Wizkid to grow up and focus on his music, highlighting that Davido has neither mentioned Wizkid publicly nor privately. Also, he reminded Wizkid that several artists he mentioned in his rant, including Davido, were bigger than him, taunting him about his last album being released four years ago.
I can't believe Wizkid is acting like this at 34! Bragging about money on social media? Claiming to outshine artists who are way more relevant—Tems, Ayra, Rema—when your last hit single Essence was 4 YEARS ago?

Furthermore, the rivalry escalated further when Wizkid brought up a fashion partnership dispute, claiming that the global brand Puma had approached him first before moving on to Davido. Wizkid said he turned down the deal because Puma couldn’t meet his financial demands. Also, he stated that their budget was more suited for Davido, who is currently a brand ambassador for the company. He emphasized his position at the top of the Nigerian music scene, boasting that he was "bigger" than fellow artists Rema, Tems, and Burna Boy.
In another outburst, Wizkid wrote: “U idiot! I turned down Puma cos they could no longer afford to pay me cos I wanted more! Don’t need dat! Way bigger than every artiste u just mentioned! Not jealous! Love em all…With ur dirty ass shirt! Idiot!” He continued: “No! Puma is Big brand! But the budget they had for Africa wasn’t for me! Was cool for your client tho!”

]]>The South African singer's song Water edged out top Nigerian artists like Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Tems, Wizkid and Davido to claim the top spot.
Meanwhile, in a surprising turn of events, Tyla took to the stage to accept her award and promptly corrected the show organizers. She clarified that she is a South African singer and not an Afrobeats artiste. Instead, she identifies with the Amapiano genre, a distinct South African sound.
Additionally, in a gracious move, Tyla acknowledged the Nigerian artists she surpassed to win the award. She gave a shoutout to Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Tems, Lojay, and Pheelz. However, this is not the first time Tyla has beaten Nigerian artistes to an award. She previously won the Best African Music Performance of 2024 at the Grammys.
Tyla's win and acceptance speech have ignited a conversation about genre classification and the representation of African music globally. While some celebrate her victory, others question the criteria used to select the Best Afrobeats artist. Lastly, the debate is sure to continue, with many eagerly awaiting the next development in this story.

]]>Nigerian award-winning singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has responded to comments about Afrobeats made by Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton.
Banton recently criticised the Afrobeats genre, which is currently dominating the global music scene, accusing it of not giving due credit to reggae and dancehall, lacking musical depth, and being a culture vulture movement that stole from Jamaica.
During a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, the popular American syndicated radio show hosted by DJ Envy, Charlamagne tha God, and Jess Hilarious, Tems reiterated her stance on the matter when asked about Banton's remarks.
The 29-year-old songstress explained that, like any genre, Afrobeats serves a specific purpose, particularly for its Nigerian originators. According to Tems, Afrobeats is designed to celebrate good times, which is exactly what it does. She emphasised:
"Afrobeats is not reggae; it's not rock. It has a specific purpose. When you think about where it comes from—Nigeria—it’s made for a certain experience. You're welcome to join us in its enjoyment."
