In a heartwarming display of generosity, some of Nigeria's top artists have made headlines with their mega donations to various individuals and organisations.

From music moguls to Grammy-winning artists, these philanthropic acts have left fans and critics alike in awe. While some give out small amounts within their means, others leave fans in awe of their massive contributions.

Here, we look at some Nigerian artists whose mega donations, running into millions, shook the internet.

1. Don Jazzy's N100m surprise

Don Jazzy mega donation

Firstly, music mogul Michael Collins Ajereh, better known as Don Jazzy, recently left Nigerians astonished when he donated N100 million to the NGO run by a controversial online critic, Vincent Martins Otse, also known as Verydarkman (VDM). Despite being called out by VDM in the past for giving money to crossdresser Bobrisky, Don Jazzy still found him deserving of the huge donation. This act sparked numerous reactions, with many Nigerians expressing surprise at his generosity.

2. Rema's N105m church donation

Secondly, Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, made headlines in September 2024 after donating N105 million to Christ Embassy church in Benin, Edo State. During a homecoming visit, Rema was moved to give a large sum to the church that had supported him and his family following his father’s death. His generous contribution was widely celebrated, showcasing his deep connection to the church.

3. Davido's N300m orphanage pledge

Meanwhile, one of the most notable acts of philanthropy recently came from Nigerian superstar Davido. In February 2024, amidst Nigeria’s economic downturn, the artist made a mega donation, pledging N300 million to orphanages across Nigeria. His foundation, the David Adeleke Foundation, released a statement detailing the breakdown of the funds distributed to 427 orphanages, benefiting nearly 14,000 children. Despite some criticism from online trolls, Davido stood by his decision and provided evidence of the donation, silencing sceptics. However, this wasn't the first time Davido demonstrated such generosity; in 2022, he also donated N250 million to orphanages across 28 Nigerian states, further cementing his reputation as a philanthropic star.

4. Davido's Father's N1 billion church donation

Additionally, Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, a billionaire businessman, added to the family’s legacy of giving by donating N1 billion to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Surulere, Lagos. The donation, made in August 2024, was in honour of his late mother, Nnenna Esther Adeleke. This mega donation coming from someone who is not an artist shows the Adeleke family’s commitment to philanthropy and supporting their community, especially in Nigeria.

5. Wizkid donates N100 million to Surulere kids

Furthermore, Grammy-winning artist Wizkid made headlines with two significant philanthropic acts. In December 2023, he gifted N20 million to hypeman Money Gee (GOE) after a song was dedicated to him, reinforcing his image as a supportive figure in the industry.

Additionally, Wizkid pledged and fulfilled a N100 million donation to children in his hometown of Surulere, Lagos, in memory of his late mother, Morayo Balogun. This act of generosity highlighted his commitment to honouring his mother's legacy and giving back to the community that shaped him.

Nigerian Afro-fusion pop stars BNXN and Rema have joined forces for the first time on their new single, 'Fi Kan We Kan,' released via EMPIRE. This track combines an infectious beat with themes of perseverance and unity, making it the ideal anthem for celebration. Produced by Blaizebeats, 'Fi Kan We Kan' revolves around the idea of accountability and paying what you owe.

BNXN kicks off the track with a smooth flow, highlighting his signature sound and expressing his frustration over wasted time and energy on trivial matters. This single is set to be a hit during the holiday season and will soon be accompanied by a video directed by award-winning filmmaker Meji Alabi. 'Fi Kan We Kan' follows BNXN's recent release, "Phenomena," which came on the heels of his collaborative album with Ruger titled RnB. That project has garnered 256 million streams, peaked at No. 3 on the Apple Music Top Albums chart, and was announced to fans in an exclusive Billboard News interview.

With over 2.1 billion career streams, BNXN has worked with artists like Wizkid, Stefflon Don, Olamide, Blk Odyssy, Burna Boy, and D Smoke. He was also featured on the cover of Teen Vogue and named among Grammy.com’s Rising Afrobeats Artists.

Both BNXN and Rema have multiple chart-topping singles and sold-out shows worldwide, showcasing why they are considered two of the most talented songwriters in recent years. Stream "Fi Kan We Kan" now to experience the magic of their collaboration.

The smash-hit song Calm Down by Rema, featuring Selena Gomez, has become the first African and Afrobeat song to reach one billion on-demand streams in the US. Thereby, marking an important point in the history of Afrobeat.

In the late 1960s, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and drummer Tony Allen experimented with many contemporary music genres in Nigeria. This in turn led to the birth of Afrobeat. The genres they played with were highlife, fuji, and jùju to serve as the base for the highly upbeat genre. Other things that had influence on earlier Afrobeats were Yoruba vocal rhythm and instrumentation.

Over time, with the help and creativity of amazing artists, Afrobeats has gone global. Day by day, it is gaining popularity and stance all over the world. From Afrobeat festivals and concerts in non-speaking countries like Brazil. To the evident growing numbers of streams on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. Afrobeats is on worldview. It has even gained recognition at major music awards such as Grammys and BET awards.

The collaboration's Impact on Afrobeat

Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, gained the spotlight in the music scene in 2019 with his self-titled EP. He also gained buzz with his 'Indian style' melodies, leading to a mix of Afrobeat, trap, and Indian influences. Selena Gomez is a versatile American artist who has been in the limelight since her childhood days at Disney. Her music career has consistently topped the charts for many years.

Rema and S. Gomez
Rema and S. Gomez

This collaboration, Rema and Selena Gomez, is surely one that has changed the dynamics of Afrobeat for the better. Calm Down was first released in March 2022 as a part of Rema's debut album Raves & Roses. It became even more popular after Selena Gomez collaborated on a remix. The remix went on to become a worldwide sensation. It especially gained popularity in the United States and broke several records for an African artist and an Afrobeat song.

The Calm Down remix peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the Billboard Pop Airplay Chart, spent more than 52 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, got certified by the RIAA as 4X platinum, and became the most viewed music video by a Nigerian artist with over 596 million views for the original version and 893 million views for the remix.

The song’s success put into the limelight Afrobeat’s ability to resonate with diverse listeners and have a lasting impact on the genre’s evolution. It has also opened doors for international collaborations and paved a pathway for continued growth in the industry.

The third quarter of 2024 was an eventful period for the Nigerian music industry, marked by remarkable achievements, controversies, and moments that shaped the Nigerian music industry.

From sold-out concerts to chart-topping albums, and from industry critiques to groundbreaking collaborations, here are the top 10 moments that shaped the Nigerian music landscape.

1. Asake sells out O2 Arena for the second time

Firstly, Asake, the YBNL star, delivered an electrifying performance at the O2 Arena on Saturday, September 21, 2024, as part of his Lungu Boy tour. This marked the second time in his three-year career that the Nigerian Afrobeats singer sold out the iconic London venue, following his first O2 show in August 2023. Performing to over 20,000 fans, Asake turned the night into an unforgettable experience with new stage designs and an expanded setlist.

Also, tracks from his newly released album, Lungu Boy, mixed with older hits like Remember, Fuji Vibe, and MMS, had the audience singing along passionately. What made the event even more special was the lineup of guest appearances. This includes Afrobeats giants Wizkid, Stormzy, and others, all of whom graced the stage to perform alongside Asake.

2. Flavour sells out Wembley Arena

Secondly, Nigerian highlife sensation Flavour has officially joined the ranks of Nigerian artists who have sold out the Wembley Arena in London. The 12,500-capacity venue hosted Flavour’s African Royalty Experience tour on August 23, 2024, a night filled with music, dance, and cultural celebration. Following the release of his album African Royalty, Flavour has toured across Europe, stopping in cities like Paris, Lisbon, and London.

His setlist featured fan-favourite tracks like Ada Ada, Nwa Baby, and Oyi, along with more recent hits like Levels. Also, the night was filled with traditional Igbo and Afrobeat rhythms, highlighting Flavour’s signature mix of highlife and modern Afrobeat.

3. Fireboy DML’s album brings Lagbaja back from retirement

Thirdly, Fireboy DML’s much-anticipated fourth studio album, Adedamola, released on August 29, 2024, has become a subject of intense discussion. This is primarily because of the participation of the iconic Nigerian Afrobeat legend, Lagbaja. The collaboration marked Lagbaja’s return from retirement after years of absence. Also, its result is a soulful blend of saxophones, violins, and traditional drums that evokes nostalgia.
