The Nigerian music scene has witnessed a wealth of culture-shifting visuals that have either shaped the industry or redefined its essence. These music videos go beyond mere entertainment; they are milestones that capture the spirit of an era, pushing boundaries and setting standards for the industry.

While modern music videos often prioritise high-quality production and aesthetics, truly iconic visuals possess more than just surface appeal. They tell compelling stories, reflect cultural identity, and deliver innovative concepts that leave a lasting impact on their audience.

This article highlights music videos that, while not necessarily the most visually polished, stand out for their cultural significance, storytelling, and originality. These visuals played pivotal roles in shaping the Nigerian music industry, distinguishing themselves as timeless works of art and elevating the global perception of Nigerian music as a cultural treasure. In no particular order, the 10 iconic Nigerian music videos are:

10. 'No be God' - Gino

Released in 2005 as part of his debut album, Pain Plus Work, Gino's "No Be God" remains one of the most iconic Nigerian hip-hop songs, celebrated for its lyrical depth and relatable storytelling. The song's impact was further amplified by its groundbreaking music video, which marked a new era for Nigerian hip-hop visuals. Unlike the typical format where the artist dominates the screen, the video for "No Be God" stood out for its innovative use of characters. Various individuals, portraying diverse roles, lip-synced Gino's lines, creating a unique and engaging narrative. This creative approach not only broke conventions but also elevated the song's message, making it resonate deeply with audiences.

Undoubtedly, "No Be God" represents a pivotal moment in the Nigerian music scene, cementing its place as a classic in the evolution of hip-hop visuals in the country.

9. 'Oliver Twist' - D'Banj

In an era when Nigerian Afrobeats was still largely localised, D’banj’s collaboration with American rap icon Snoop Dogg on the remix of "Mr. Endowed" marked a groundbreaking moment. Tagged at the time as one of the hottest international collaborations between a Nigerian artist and a global star, the track—and its accompanying video featuring a cameo from Snoop Dogg—sparked immense excitement locally, as it signified the export potential of Nigerian music. Just a year later, D’banj reaffirmed this global trajectory with the release of the official music video for "Oliver Twist" in March 2012. Directed by renowned Nigerian cinematographer Sesan, the video showcased not only its high production quality but also star-studded cameos from G.O.O.D. Music rapper Pusha T and one of the world’s biggest artists, Kanye West.

This was a redefining moment for Nigerian music, signalling its growing influence on the global stage and solidifying D’banj’s position as a pioneer in bridging the gap between local sounds and international audiences

8. 'Holla at your Boy' - Wizkid

Everything about the "Holla at Your Boy" video screamed "new dawn" and "new school." Released in 2010, it marked the debut single of Wizkid and introduced a fresh wave of creativity to the Nigerian music scene. Directed by Patrick Ellis, a young and emerging Nigerian cinematographer at the time, the visuals captured the essence of the "new school" era in both style and substance. The video also spotlighted budding talents like Ice Prince, Skales, and Asa Asika—individuals who have since risen to global prominence in the entertainment world. Its concept was vibrant, youthful, and refreshing, reflecting the cultural shifts happening within the industry and among Nigeria's youth.

More than just a music video, "Holla at Your Boy" became a cultural blueprint, influencing fashion, mannerisms, and lifestyles for a new generation. It undeniably ushered in a new age for Nigerian music, shaping trends both within and beyond the entertainment sphere. Truly, a defining moment!

7. 'Bandana' - Fireboy DML & Asake

Directed by the renowned Nigerian cinematographer TG Omori, this video stands as a testament to the modern era of visually stunning music videos. It exemplifies effort, intentionality, teamwork, and, most importantly, impeccable quality. The visuals showcase a seamless blend of Afrocentric aesthetics and contemporary street culture. Set against a variety of dramatic backdrops, the video features striking imagery, including a choir adorned in flowing robes, Asake in a celestial-inspired setting, and Fireboy illuminated by bold, fiery lighting. These elements not only highlight the duo's spiritual undertones but also emphasise their individuality as artists.

Adding a futuristic twist, TG Omori incorporates a flying car scene, pushing creative boundaries and infusing the video with an innovative edge. This bold choice underscores how far the Nigerian music video scene has evolved in terms of output and quality, making "Bandana" a standout visual masterpiece.

6. 'Never Far Away' - Lagbaja

Another classic for the books, this video beautifully showcases African aesthetics—capturing its clothing, culture, lifestyle, and even musical instruments. Directed by the talented Tunde Kelani, it is a powerful fusion of artistry, cultural expression, and emotional depth. The video emphasises the themes of unity, togetherness, and the importance of community, which are central to the song's message. Complemented by the rich production of the song itself, the visuals celebrate African identity and aesthetics, telling an important and authentic story. Lagbaja’s choice of location, Abeokuta in Southwest Nigeria, effortlessly highlights the African landscape, with its striking rock formations, traditional homes, and expansive compounds known as Agbo Ile in Yoruba. These elements provide a vivid representation of local aesthetics, drawing attention to the beauty of rural African life.

Tunde Kelani’s signature cinematic style—characterised by cultural detail, compelling storytelling, and emotive visuals—perfectly captures the essence of Lagbaja’s music and message, creating a powerful sense of warmth and connection for the viewer.

5. 'Back in Uni' - Blaqbonez

Although not necessarily the crispiest in terms of quality, this video stands out as one of the most creative visuals of the modern era, earning its place in the spotlight. Known for his comedic persona, Blaqbonez infuses his unique charm into the co-directed visual alongside cinematographer Perliks. Together, they creatively reimagine popular Nigerian artists, with Blaqbonez portraying all the characters while expertly mirroring his colleagues' signature looks. It’s a truly memorable production and undoubtedly one for the books.

4. 'Fire on the Mountain' - Asa

Stepping away from the song's classical feel, the visuals perfectly complement its energy. The minimalist yet impactful cinematography, with its subtle colour tones and artistic framing, heightens the song's sombre yet urgent message. Asa navigates various settings in the video, portraying a world caught between turmoil and indifference. The visuals cleverly contrast moments of peace with scenes of struggle, emphasising the stark divide between the privileged and the suffering. One standout feature of the video is its originality—it feels like a groundbreaking concept that hasn’t been replicated by any Nigerian artist to date. Truly, it’s an exceptional piece of visual storytelling.

3. 'Ijoya' - Weird MC

The animated video for Weird MC's "Ijoya" is a vibrant and imaginative reimagining of the iconic hit, delivering a fresh and visually captivating experience. The animation brims with bold colors, dynamic movements, and playful caricatures that perfectly embody the song's energetic spirit. While Lagbaja’s "Surulere" was an earlier foray into animated Nigerian music videos, "Ijoya" quickly rose to prominence after its release, surpassing its predecessor in popularity. It became a cultural touchstone and remains the definitive example of animated Nigerian music videos.

2. 'Lagos Party' - Banky W

Banky W's "Lagos Party" video is a dazzling showcase of the vibrant Lagos social scene, celebrating the city’s deep love for luxury, style, and nightlife. It captures the essence of a quintessential Lagos highlife party, complete with stylish ensembles, infectious energy, and a star-studded guest list. More than just a music video, "Lagos Party" is a visual anthem for the Lagos lifestyle—where music, fashion, and celebration seamlessly collide. Widely regarded as one of the most iconic Nigerian music videos of all time, it perfectly encapsulates the glamour and excitement of Lagos nightlife. Featuring an unmatched roster of entertainment heavyweights, the video remains a benchmark for star power and creativity that has yet to be surpassed in Nigerian music history.

1. 'Do Me' - P-Square

Essentially the blueprint for clean, crisp, and aesthetically rich Nigerian music videos, this visual revolutionised the industry upon its release. It set a new standard, shaping the expectations of Nigerian audiences for music videos and defining the direction for entertainers to follow. The video seamlessly combines star power, captivating choreography, engaging activity, stunning visuals, and top-tier production quality. These elements not only elevated it to iconic status but also cemented its place as a game-changer that redefined the Nigerian music video landscape.

Here are reasons why Drake is likely to lose his lawsuits against his label UMG and Spotify over the release of Kindrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us.'

Following official confirmation of a second lawsuit filed by Drake against his label, Universal Music Group (UMG) about the release of Kendrick Lamar’s viral rap song, ‘Not Like Us’ we have analysed why the Canadian rapper is likely to lose both cases (against UMG and also Spotify) if they go to trial.

Kendrick Lamar Beef: Drake vs. UMG and Spotify

On November 25, 2024, it was revealed that Drake had filed the first legal dispute against his label, Universal Music Group (UMG), and the digital music platform, Spotify.

Location: New York

  • Allegations: In the legal dispute filed by Drake’s lawyers, UMG was accused of manipulating streams for the track "Not Like Us" on platforms like Spotify and through radio promotions. In his submission, Drake claimed this was done to artificially boost the song's popularity and profits.
  • Details: The lawsuit alleges that UMG engaged in unethical practices, including bribery and misleading advertising, to ensure the song's commercial success. In the document shared, Drake’s team stated, “On information and belief, UMG charged Spotify licensing rates 30 percent lower than its usual licensing rates for ‘Not Like Us’ in exchange for Spotify affirmatively recommending the song to users who were searching for other unrelated songs and artists.”

Why Would Drake Lose the Lawsuit Against UMG and Spotify?

Part of the evidence submitted in Drake’s legal dispute against Spotify and UMG referenced a video shared by a TikTok user. The video demonstrated how asking Apple’s Siri for the specific lyrics “certified lover boy” automatically directed it to Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar. However, the user later clarified in a follow-up video that Apple’s assistant was searching based on lyrics, not the song’s title. This nullifies the argument that users searching for Drake’s song were intentionally redirected to Kendrick’s.

Additionally, contrary to claims that Not Like Us was heavily marketed by UMG and Spotify, there is substantial evidence suggesting otherwise. This includes an apology and acknowledgement from Spotify about the aggressive promotion of Drake’s Scorpion album, which caused widespread user frustration. According to Billboard:

“The campaign was intended to be a quirky celebration of Spotify’s top streaming artist, helping him to break the one-week U.S. streaming record in only three days and putting him on pace to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. But some subscribers online have been decrying the decision as an imposition of advertisements on what are supposed to be ad-free accounts, with a select number taking their complaints directly to the company with requests for refunds.”

Drake vs. UMG on Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us Lyrics

Location: Texas

  • Allegations: Drake’s second lawsuit, filed on November 26, 2024, centers on defamation, with Drake alleging that the lyrics of "Not Like Us" falsely portray him as a sex offender and accuse him of other criminal activities.
  • Details: The lawsuit claims that UMG could have prevented the release or required edits to remove defamatory content but failed to act.

Why Would Drake Lose His Second Lawsuit Against UMG?

Drake Kendrick Lamar UMG

This lawsuit is widely regarded as weak from the outset. Drake himself has made unverified allegations against Kendrick Lamar, including claims about Kendrick’s relationship with his wife and the paternity of one of his children. In Drake's diss track "Family Matters," he rapped:

“Your baby mama captions always screamin', 'Save me,' You did her dirty all your life, you tryna make peace, I heard that one of 'em little kids might be Dave Free, Don’t make it Dave Free’s, 'Cause if your GM is your BM secret BD.”

It remains to be seen how far these cases would go or if Drake would get in the booth like many rap fans have advised and issue a reply to arguably what has been categorised as the dopest diss tracks of the decade. Kendrick Lamar is still dominating the music space with the surprise release of his album GNX, as it gave us the Compton rapper unfiltered.

From him taking shots at those he viewed as backstabbers to sampling the Tupac legendary “Made Niggaz,” and also speaking about the Super Bowl controversy, GNX is definitely a body of work rap in the 2020s deserved as a form of reset and rekindling a genre many feel was dwindling.

The Afrobeats scene has experienced a slower year compared to previous ones, where breakout stars were typically solidified by the third quarter.

Since 2020, the "Afrobeats to the World" movement has gained tremendous momentum, producing numerous global hits and captivating audiences worldwide. Sold-out arenas and the rise of new stars have become commonplace.

Typically, artistes build their catalogues from the beginning of the year (at most second quarter), aiming to accumulate enough "hits" or at least familiar tracks to secure bookings for the "ember" months. By the third quarter, the distinct breakout stars of Afrobeats are usually recognised and cemented. Promoters often clamour for these fresh faces, eager to book them as their novelty usually excites concertgoers. Beyond being promoters' favourites, some artistes even manage to headline their own shows by year-end, provided they’ve built momentum early on and have a strong enough catalogue to support a headline event.

Looking back over the past decade, Afrobeats has consistently introduced new faces who has either remained relevant till now or shone for a few years or less before stepping aside. In 2019, soul-stirring songstress Tems emerged as one of the most exciting new acts, with breakout hits like 'Looku Looku' and 'Mr. Rebel.' She would go on to have and be part of global anthems like 'Essence,' 'Free Mind,' and 'Wait for U,' even earning a Grammy. Also, controversial street-hop singer Naira Marley had one of the most impressive streaks in modern Afrobeats, with back-to-back hits like 'Pxta,' 'Tingasa,' 'Tesumole,' 'Mafo,' 'Am I A Yahoo Boy,' 'Opotoyi,' 'Soapy,' 'Gobe,' and others.

In 2020, despite the lockdown, stars like Omah Lay rose to prominence with his 'Get Layd' EP, featuring tracks like 'Bad Influence' and 'Damn.' BNXN (formerly Buju), who had already made waves the previous year with 'Spiritual,' was propelled further with the 2020 remix of 'L'enu' featuring Burna Boy. Blaqbonez also had a strong year with hits like 'Shut Up,' 'Haba,' and 'BBC.' Ajebo Hustlers made their mark with the End-SARS charting protest anthem 'Barawo,' followed by a remix featuring Davido. Bella Shmurda solidified his position with 'Vision 2020' featuring Olamide and monster hit 'Cash App,' along with notable guest appearances on albums by Davido, Olamide, and Wizkid.

2021 introduced Afro-pop sensation Lojay, whose joint project with ace producer Sarz, 'LV N ATTN', featured Wizkid and included major hits like 'Tonongo' and 'Monalisa.' Lojay also shone on DJ Neptune’s 'Only Fan' alongside Zlatan. Ayra Starr captivated audiences with 'Away,' 'Fashion Killer,' and 'Bloody Samaritan,' while Fave charmed with 'Beautifully' and 'Baby Riddim,' and featured on Olamide's tenth studio album 'UY Scuti.'

In 2022, we witnessed one of the most impactful breakouts in Afrobeats history: Asake. In a single year, he released both an EP and an album, delivering smash hits like 'Sungba,' 'Omo Ope,' 'Terminator,' 'Palazzo,' 'PBUY' and a slew of others. Despite Asake’s overwhelming presence, the year still allowed other artists like Victony, Pheelz, Young Jonn, and Seyi Vibez to gain their own well-deserved recognition.

2023 saw fewer breakout acts, but those who did emerge made a significant impact. NATIVE records rapper Odumodublvck had a stellar year, with his track 'Declan Rice' even being used by a 138-year-old English football club, Arsenal, to announce their new player, Declan Rice. Shallipopi also had an outstanding year, with hits like 'Elon Musk,' 'Oscroh,' and 'Cast,' earning enough buzz to launch his own record label.

However, in 2024, the pace has noticeably slowed. Although new faces have appeared, they have yet to leave the same mark as their predecessors. There are no major hits or influential tracks that would position them as headliners or even key acts on festival lineups. Some might attribute this slowdown to the overwhelming volume of music being released, making it difficult for listeners to keep up. Also, the music scene’s growing competitiveness, coupled with the influx of money, has arguably made it more cutthroat, with talented artistes without sponsorship being overlooked or unable to achieve greater milestones as opposed to those with bigger marketing budgets. Nevertheless, new talents will continue to emerge. Against this backdrop, below are some of the notable acts that have made significant strides in breaking through in 2024, in no particular order:

1. TML VIBEZ

The Seyi Vibez signee is currently one of the most exciting street-hop artistes in the scene. Also in the "Afro-Adura" gang, a genre which revolves around themes of optimism, grass-to-grace stories, the importance of faith in God, and documenting the harsh realities of the lower class—including poverty, fraud, drugs, and more—he's made a strong impact since his signing in 2023.

The 24-year-old tireless singer has released three EPs and one joint EP, delivering top-charting tracks like 'Where i’m From,' 'Maria,' 'My Padi,' 'Alhamdulillah,' 'Wells Fargo,' and many others. While TML Vibez boasts an impressive catalogue with notable streaming numbers that cater to his niche audience of street-hop lovers, this hasn't fully translated into mainstream success. He's yet to deliver a smash hit that breaks through to the wider Afrobeats market, limiting his influence in the broader scene. Nevertheless, the hard work and immense talent TML Vibez has shown this year have rightfully earned him a place in the conversation

2. AYO MAFF

Although initially introduced as a street-hop act with his introspective debut, '7 Days,' the 18-year-old artist has since expanded his style to incorporate elements of street-hop, pop, and Afro-fusion, all contributing to his unique take on Afrobeats. His tracks often feature catchy melodies, smooth vocals, and rhythmic beats, and lyrically, he draws from familiar 'Afro-Adura' themes, focussing on faith and resilience while also exploring broader topics like love, daily life, and drugs.

Beyond '7 Days,' the singer has had a solid run in 2024, notably with 'Dealer,' which features YBNL heavyweight Fireboy DML. However, his follow-up track, 'Last Week,' hasn’t quite matched the success of his previous drop. Although his recently-released EP 'Maffian' is yet to gain the traction needed to propel his career to the next level, a recent co-sign from Afrobeats superstar Asake, including a performance at the iconic 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London, puts him in a promising position as we approach the final three months of 2024.

3. LLONA

Another independent artist on the list, the singer’s 2023 release, HBP Remix, featuring street-hop star Bella Shmurda, gained significant momentum. Interestingly, the 27-year-old followed up with a debut project and album, 'Homeless,' which should definitely be considered in the 'Album of the Year' conversation. Llona, an Afro-fusion artiste, wears his persona so firmly that it reflects in his craft—he's authentic, vulnerable, and fierce in telling his story, which resonates with the life chronicles of many modern-day youths. He speaks openly about his mistakes, failures, and struggles.

Although somewhat niche, Llona has been able to gradually penetrate a wider audience that relates to his story, particularly lost youths trying to find their place in the world. His debut album has garnered over 10 million streams on Spotify alone, featuring gems like 'Still Scared,' 'Another Day,' 'Forgive Me,' and 'Cold War,' the latter featuring songstress Fave. With the way Llona has effectively utilised community as a tool to spread his music, combined with the quality of his catalogue, he is on track to potentially headline his own show by the end of 2024 or early 2025, if done strategically.

4. ANENDLESSOCEAN

Often mistaken for a gospel artiste, the singer has consistently stated that he refuses to be boxed in. According to him, he’s a Christian who makes music, and that could cover any topic—whether it's about God, love, or socio-economic issues. His musical style floats around traditional African sounds, Afro-fusion, pop, and R&B, all of which enhance his calm and peaceful persona. Lyrically, he delves into themes of spirituality, introspection, nature, and emotional depth, inviting listeners to reflect and connect on a personal level.

Though the singer began actively gathering his followers in 2022, his 2023 single 'Gratitude' was pivotal in shaping his career. In 2024, he’s made even more of an impact with singles like 'LMLY,' 'Love Practitioner,' and 'Be.' While his music is not yet mainstream, AEO has strategically leveraged his loyal niche fanbase. He headlined a concert in Lagos in December 2023, followed by another headline show in Ibadan in 2024. He is currently on tour in the United Kingdom, expanding his reach even further.

5. NASBOI

Although initially not taken seriously due to his comedic persona as a popular social media skitmaker, Nasboi has proven himself to be a talented and strategic artist. In terms of identity, the Afro-fusion act possesses a vocal delivery that seamlessly blends the soulful essence of 2Baba with the vibrant energy of Davido.

Nasboi made his musical debut in 2023 with Lover Boy and followed it up with Umbrella, his biggest record to date, featuring the legendary Nigerian Afropop star Wande Coal. He has since released impressive follow-ups like Small Money, Short Skirt, and Could This Be Love, showcasing his versatility and growth. To cap off an outstanding 2024, the singer released his debut album In Nasboi I Trust and its deluxe edition, which includes the social media-viral hit Hunger Games. The project underscores Nasboi’s evolution from a comedic entertainer to a formidable force in the Afro-fusion music scene.

Notable mentions include Kold AF, Muyeez, BhadBoi OML, Zhus Jdo, Taves, Bahd Man Niko, Balloranking, Rybenna, Tiphe, Kaestyle and a slew of others.

The album encapsulates all the facets of Wizkid’s artistry and chronicles his evolution over the years, transitioning from high-energy anthems to soulful, laid-back vibes.

Since then, he has delivered standout projects such as Ayo, Sounds From the Other Side, and most notably, Made in Lagos, arguably his finest and most successful album to date.

Wizkid has continuously evolved, redefining his sound since Sounds From the Other Side, a shift that culminated in the globally acclaimed Made in Lagos. This transformation, likely influenced by his exposure to diverse musical landscapes, moved him away from the high-energy "kpalongo" sound that once dominated his catalogue and the industry at large. Instead, his recent work leans towards a more relaxed, soulful style, enriched with lush instrumentation. However, his last two projects—More Love, Less Ego (2022) and S2 (2023)—while maintaining his refined direction didn’t resonate as expected, leaving him in search of a project that could rival or surpass the success of Made in Lagos.

Titled Morayo after his late mother, whom he lost in 2023, fans anticipated Wizkid’s most introspective and heartfelt project to date. However, rather than centering solely on introspection, the singer chose to highlight the various personas of his artistry since his debut—infused with romance and a touch of playful sensuality that remains a core ingredient of his music.

Wizkid's Late mum, Morayo

The album begins on a reflective note, sampling Fuji legend Kwam 1 De Ultimate’s performance at Wizkid’s mother’s funeral. With rich instrumentation—primarily gangan drums and saxophone—that permeates the album, the opening track, Troubled Mind, sets the tone. As the title suggests, Wizkid reveals his vulnerabilities on this mid-tempo P2J-co-produced record, making it an apt introduction to the project.

While Troubled Mind lays a soulful foundation, the energy shifts instantly with the second track, Karamo. It’s a lively, groove-packed party starter that rekindles the high-energy "Lamba Wiz" fans have longed for. The tempo builds further with Kese, a lead single that amassed a record-breaking 1.57 million streams on Spotify within 24 hours of release. With its irresistible Afrobeats rhythm and dance-floor appeal, Kese is undeniably a standout on the album, crafted to ignite clubs and playlists alike.

The project’s first feature comes from Asake, whose appearance on the album was a pleasant surprise, especially considering their recent collaboration on the Grammy-nominated song MMS, which was highly praised by music lovers. Unlike the solemn and reflective tone of MMS, their new track Bad Girl takes a more uptempo approach, celebrating a lady with playful admiration. While it’s a decent record, it falls short of being exceptional. Given the massive success of MMS, Bad Girl might struggle to maintain momentum and could fade quickly, unable to compete with the impact of their initial collaboration both sonically and in terms of potential.

Wizkid’s transition since Sounds From the Other Side, which positioned him as a soft-spoken, soul-stirring R&B artist, continues to evolve impressively, often yielding stellar results within this spectrum. Time is one of the laid-back tracks on the project, delivering a well-deserved dose of lush melodies. The tempo seamlessly carries into Piece of My Heart, a silky R&B duet featuring American singer Brent Faiyaz. The track is particularly noteworthy for its structure as a two-in-one record, shifting sounds within the same song. Its exceptional delivery and unique arrangement make it another standout on the album, solidifying its place as one of the lead singles preceding the project’s release.

Known for infusing Caribbean influences into his music through tracks like Joro, Mamacita, and others, Wizkid explores similar themes with Break Me Down. This track blends sensuality with an upbeat tempo, merging Afro-Caribbean vibes with an R&B flair. Its groove is enhanced by a stellar yet understated performance from an unknown songstress. The tempo resets to a party-starters template with Bend, a proper Afrobeats banger that many anticipated. Slightly heavier than Kese, it has all the makings of a club anthem and could easily become a standout track from the project. In contrast, A Million Blessings feels underwhelming and skippable. Despite the orchestra-inspired production laced with Afrobeats elements that attempt to elevate it, the track lacks the energy and flair to leave a lasting impression, coming across as an album filler.

Wizkid’s signature soulful, feel-good sound makes a strong return on Après Minuit and Bad For You, featuring French rapper Tiakola and American singer Jazmine Sullivan, respectively. These tracks showcase his ability to carefully select collaborators who seamlessly complement his artistry. This approach has paid off in the past with tracks like True Love featuring Tay Iwar and Projexx from Made in Lagos, and the pattern continues to shine here.

While Soji leans on its Afrobeats roots, it doesn’t rise above being another filler. On the other hand, Don’t Care delves deeper into indigenous Afrobeat vibes, offering a more grounded and authentic Wiz. Meanwhile, Slow and Lose are beautifully delivered soft-tempo tracks that resonate with Wizkid’s introspective side, adding a refreshing calm to the album’s flow. The project ends on a high note with Pray, a track that ties together the album’s reflective and celebratory themes.

With P2J producing fourteen tracks and P.Priime and DAMEDAME handling the remaining two, the album boasts a rich and robust soundscape, instrumentation, and production. However, the production could have benefitted from more diverse input to balance out the P2J-heavy contributions.

While Morayo strays beyond the female-centric, romantic, and sensual themes that often characterise Wizkid’s music, it falls short of presenting a cohesive core theme. Whether tied to the significance of its title or simply as a standalone project, the album lacks a unifying thematic structure, leaving it feeling somewhat disjointed. It doesn’t deliver the kind of immersive experience that channels the listener’s thoughts in a specific direction—perhaps towards romance, as has been the hallmark of some of Wizkid’s most memorable works.

Nonetheless, the project is more inclusive, showcasing nearly every artistic phase of Wizkid’s career. It marks an intentional return to crafting proper Afrobeats bangers, a dimension of his brand that has been notably missing in recent years. Morayo is a blend of Wizkid’s signature styles, presented on a more mature and well-rounded level, making it accessible to fans across different stages of life. Despite these highlights, Morayo as a whole feels decent but doesn’t quite possess the standout quality needed to compete with several other Nigerian albums released in 2024. It’s a solid addition to Wizkid’s catalogue but lacks the groundbreaking appeal that defines his most celebrated work.

There’s a common misconception around sampling in Afrobeats that needs clarification.

Over the years, artists have often drawn inspiration from other musicians' works—whether old or new—to create fresh tracks, and Afrobeats as a genre wholeheartedly embraces this culture.

Interestingly, musical inspiration can come from a range of sources beyond just other songs. Movie scenes, motivational quotes, and even snippets of conversation can all spark new musical ideas, and vice-versa. Sampling has become the most popular term associated with this practice, though it’s often mistaken for interpolation due to their similarities.

To clarify: a sample involves directly using a snippet of an original recording in a new track. Meanwhile, an interpolation is a recreation of a song’s melody or composition, played note-for-note, without using the original audio.

For example, if you performed the melody from 2Baba’s “African Queen” in your own song, that would be an interpolation. But if you included an unedited loop from the original recording, that would be a sample.

For context, the Rema song below is a sample, where he brilliantly incorporated the 1985 jazz hit ‘Is It a Crime’ by Nigerian-British soul singer Sade Adu.

Nigerian superstar Wizkid has officially kicked off the highly anticipated 'Morayo' era after announcing an upcoming single with American soulful singer-songwriter Brent Faiyaz. The feel-good R&B track, titled 'Piece of My Heart,' undoubtedly sets the stage for what’s to come from the Grammy-winning singer's sixth studio album, 'Morayo.'

It's been over a decade since Wizkid released his debut album, Superstar, and his career has seen both highs and lows. Exceptional projects like Ayo, Sounds from the Other Side, and most notably Made in Lagos stand out in his catalogue. However, things have taken a shaky turn, as the singer has not yet been able to surpass MIL, arguably one of his best and most successful albums. His last two projects—More Love, Less Ego (2022) and S2 (2023)—didn't receive the expected reception, leaving him in search of a project that could surpass his previous success.

Wizkid has been redefining his sound since Sounds from the Other Side, a transformation that was cemented with Made in Lagos. It's clear that his exposure has deeply influenced his music. Instead of the high-energy "kpalongo" sound he's known for and the industry was riddled with, his recent work has been more laid-back, soulful, and rich in instrumentation. Therefore, if Morayo is delivered properly, it has the potential to give the singer the much-needed breakthrough he seeks. Although it's unlikely to surpass the monumental success of Made in Lagos, the album's significance, particularly with its title, suggests it may be more well-rounded than the female-centric projects Wizkid has been putting out recently.

Fans can expect a more introspective Wizkid on Morayo (as seen in Asake's MMS), yet still conscious of his superstar status—reflecting his experiences with wealth, women, and lifestyle. The album’s sound is expected to be rich, with an intentional display of some proper Afrobeats bangers. Overall, Morayo is expected to blend elements of Joro-era Wizkid, Blessed-era Wizkid, and Frames-era Wizkid to present a more mature, well-rounded artist who can resonate with a wider audience, no matter what phase of life they are in.

To provide more context and perspective, NotJustOk spoke to some music executives as well as dedicated Wizkid fans to hear their expectations for the upcoming album. Their thoughts are as follows:

Babalola Osogbiye (Uncle Bilo), Head Of Marketing, ONErpm Africa) said:

"For Wizkid's Morayo album, Wizkid is a global superstar and, arguably, one of the most celebrated forerunners of African music. So, I expect nothing less of these to be embedded in the album. Sound-wise, I expect it to be global, with a shade or with all shades of African music elements. Because, I mean, the album title is native, which should tell us everything that we need to know already. I believe the album would have, like, shades of African music elements because we shouldn't alienate ourselves from our roots; it is the foundation of all that it is with our music. But from the business perspective, we should expect sounds that cement Wizkid's global presence in the global music atmosphere, just like he did with Essence."

Moses Kusemi, Operations Manager of Boomplay, opines that, personally, he does not have big expectations for the album as Wizkid's sound has become very predictable. Over the years, it has been the same Wizkid. He goes on to state that the singer hasn't had a wow factor in his recent projects. Even though he is looking forward to Morayo and wants to be surprised by the singer, he doesn’t have any high expectations for the album.

An ardent fan of Wizkid and accorded as many as a frontier of the Wizkid FC Fanbase, Basito says:

"Morayo is coming, and I know for sure Wizkid is going to deliver; he’s never let us down, and he’s definitely not going to start now with Morayo. Quality is never a question when it comes to a Wiz album. The only thing I would say is I hope he does right by the album this time around and pushes it to every corner of the world. The world can do a lot with a Wizkid album right now, and it’s only right if they’re alerted about it through every channel there is."

Another ardent fan and music enthusiast, Lasisi Farouk, says:

"The thing is, you know, Morayo is something special to him, so I know that he's going to do something a bit like Made in Lagos because I think that's Wizkid's new identity and sound, and he has producers that he is used to (around him). So, you know, I think those are the sounds that are pleasing to people's ears; they want to listen to something like Made in Lagos again. And it's going to come from a place of pain and pleasure; it's also going to come from a woman's perspective. That's Wiz for you. I know he's going to come along with his identity: traditional drums, saxophones, pianos, and all those sounds we like. It's going to come out very nice and smooth, and he has anticipated it well. Wizzy is a perfectionist; he wants his stuff to sound exactly the way he envisions. I'm expecting something new too. I'd like to see him do something he hasn't done before. Something nice."

Another fan, Theophilus, is highly optimistic about the project and can’t wait to have it. He says:

"Honestly, I'm expecting nothing short of greatness; beautiful and relatable songs. We all know how meticulous Wiz is when making his songs. I believe all tracks will reflect this. I'm just patiently awaiting this album, as I need some fresh and soulful music."

Adetomi says: "I'm expecting a lot of emotions from it, especially since he recently lost his mum, and we all know Wizkid loves his mum. So yeah, that, and also his usual serenade on love and hustle."

From luxury brands to telecom giants, Wizkid leveraged his cross-genre appeal to ink lucrative sponsorship agreements. Secondly, the chart-topping artist subsequently joined forces with leading Nigerian network MTN in 2013. Originally a one-year agreement, both parties opted to expand the mutually beneficial deal for two additional terms due to its commercial success. Leveraging Wizkid's mass appeal, the telecommunications brand effectively connected with younger demographics through the endorsement. His widespread fame within the country undeniably boosted recognition for MTN.

3. Guinness Nigeria: A showcase for Afrobeats (2013)

Meanwhile, later in 2013, Wizkid partnered with Guinness Nigeria to promote the extravagant Guinness World of More concert, held at the luxurious Eko Hotel and Suites in vibrant Victoria Island, Lagos. This collaboration marked more than an endorsement; it offered Wizkid a colossal platform to showcase his remarkable talents to a mammoth crowd, solidifying his status as one of Nigeria's most electrifying performers. Moreover, the spectacular concert established his prominent presence in Nigeria's affluent corporate sector as a widely sought-after influencer.

4. GLO: A lucrative transition from MTN (2015)

However, after parting ways with the telecommunications giant MTN, Wizkid astutely signed a new endorsement deal with rival telecommunications titan GLO in 2015, valued at a sizable N128 million. This immense, high-value contract underscored Wizkid’s formidable negotiating prowess and ever-growing popularity. By selecting thriving GLO, he further reinforced his alignment with brands that genuinely value his broad appeal to Nigeria's vibrant youth.

5. Nike: A partnership with a global sports giant (2018)

Additionally, in the year 2018, Wizkid became an integral part of a momentous five-year partnership between the apparel company Nike and the Nigerian Football Federation, serving as their model and ambassador. This collaboration not only marked Wizkid's entrance into his first major sports sponsorship but also propelled his brand into the athletic and sportswear industry, a noteworthy crossover from his musical roots.

6. Ciroc: A stylish partnership with a premium brand (2018)

Furthermore, during that same year, Wizkid added a premium beverage endorsement to his portfolio by becoming the Nigerian representative of Ciroc Premium Vodka. Reportedly valued at three hundred million naira, this extremely lucrative partnership highlighted Wizkid's appeal within the luxury market and further solidified his image as a global trendsetter. By aligning with Wizkid, Ciroc helped connect with the Nigerian population and capitalize on the rising international popularity of Afrobeats music.

7. Dolce and Gabbana: Stepping into the world of high fashion

Consequently, in a move that showcased his international influence, Wizkid signed an endorsement deal with Dolce & Gabbana, where he earned a reported $10,000. Representing an African artist in a major international fashion brand was groundbreaking, as it showcased the growing influence of Afrobeats in the global fashion industry. His collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana further cemented his status as a trendsetter and style icon.

8. United Bank for Africa (UBA): A major financial deal (2019)

Basically, one of Wizkid’s largest endorsement deals came when he signed with United Bank for Africa (UBA) for $3 million. This partnership aligned him with a respected African financial institution, making him a key influencer for one of the continent’s leading banks. The deal demonstrated how Wizkid’s appeal spans industries, making him a valuable partner not just for consumer brands but also for corporate entities.

9. Puma: A global icon in sportswear (2020)

Lastly, in 2020, Wizkid secured an endorsement deal with sportswear powerhouse Puma. This deal positioned Wizkid alongside global music and sports icons who endorse the brand, further expanding his reach within the sports and lifestyle market. Through this partnership, Wizkid represented African talent on the world stage, reinforcing Puma’s commitment to diversity and cross-cultural collaboration.

The influence of Wizkid’s endorsements on his brand

So, Wizkid’s endorsement deals have been instrumental in expanding his brand beyond the music industry. His collaborations have spanned from beverages and telecommunications to fashion and financial services, reflecting his wide-ranging influence and appeal.

Through these endorsement deals, Wizkid has not only increased his wealth but has also contributed to elevating the profile of Afrobeats on the global stage. With his clothing line Star Boy and his record label Starboy, Wizkid continues to shape his legacy both as an artist and as an entrepreneur, creating opportunities for upcoming talents and solidifying his status as an African cultural ambassador.
